Speed cameras in unmarked vans
#33
Sith, (sorry its taken so long)
SPECS cameras take pictures of the front of the vehicle thereby identifying the driver and vehicle in one go and neatly avoinding the "But you're infringing my human rights if I incriminate myself" argument (having just read the whole of the ECHR )
As I haven't got SPECS anywhere near my force area yet I dunno the answer to the question about overtaking etc. I imagine that there would be some sort of variance to allow for things like that.
DJ,
A very good point well made!

Bas,
If you regularly go over the 10%+2 allowance over the speed limit in Farnborough, you have been lucky . Just yesterday they had a lazer gun on the A325 on the dual carriageway bit heading away from the clockhouse roundabout. They'd pulled over a woman driving a Renault Clio. All along the A325, and throughout Farnborough, they have mobile speed traps at various favourite places on a fairly regular basis. It annoys me that I frequently get overtaken by people doing 60+ in a 30 and they never seem to get caught.
Maybe I should get a puffa jacket, wear a baseball cap backwards and fit some Carlos Fandango alloys. Much better than a radar detector apparently.
Jerome.

Stuart H (& others)
Yep, I know the Blinder Jammer is probably already illegal (I'd don't have one) - there again so were CBs & Radar Detectors weren't they?
Don't get me wrong, I fully support 30 & 20mph limits (esp. where needed).
However I do NOT support local authorities breaking the law (deliberately hidden camera sites) or when the cameras are set-up for "road safety" reasons then 3 months later boasting (yes I DO mean boasting!) in the local press about the revenue they are generating.
A question for SH:
Why are buses & lorries never targeted in speeding clampdowns? DETR published stats show 41% of buses and 47% of artics break the 30mph limit.
OK so maybe you think I'm being paranoid, but you guys ask yourselves this: what would you prefer to accidentally step out in front of?
1) a bus
2) a white van
3) a fully ladened artic
4) 2 ton diesel powered 4x4
5) a Scoob
Finally(!): there is about to be a police campaign over the use mobile phones whilst driving - can anyone explain why the same doesn't apply to smoking, eating & drinking? I ask 'cos I passed a police car this morning where the copper was doing both - still being highly trained he doesn't need to concentrate as much does he - even at 08:50 on a road with several schools ? ? ?
Oh, yes of course I should report him but I'm not that foolish to do it so near home . . . maybe that's a sad reflection of our society?
FWIW

They are, to a greater extent than cars. They are also checked for mechanical fitness.
For some reason the press just aren't interested when it comes to lorries & cars.

Cheers for that Jerome,
The only place I've seen them regularly is on Lynchford Road by Motorcycle City. 30 limit but everyone bombs down there at about 50-60!
I'll watch out for them around the rest of Farnborough now.
Thanks again
Bas

Stuart,
Thanks for the reply. It works as I thought. I have also looked at the Speedtrap website and they have no information about Motor Bikes either.
Am I to take from this that Bikes never speed and never hit people! And we are dirty car driving scum that must be stoppped at all costs. As it seems all the PROPAGANDA is aimed at people with four wheels.
Not a dig at you Stuart. (The policy makers I'm getting at.) I thought about joining the Police Force so I could go into Traffic. Then I thought about the RTA's that need attending. Couldn't deal with some of what you guys see. And the after affects. Thats why I agree that measures are needed but not necessarily what has been implemented.

but nothing happens . . does it?
I knew 2 guys who had a haulage business, VERY suspect vehicles, always getting caught. Still kept their 'O' licence though.
Thankfully they never killed anyone . . . .
