What a sad state of affairs. IMHO of course.
You spend approx. 1/4 of each year working (based on 40hr working week) and by the sounds of it many of you are simply going through the motions as a means to earn money. You can get more out of it you know! Those individuals who give a little extra in their job may be doing so purely because they enjoy it. There intentions may not be to win over their boss or gain extra money but simply to partake in an activity which they enjoy.
I pity you if you are prepared to sheme and skive your working life away thus wasting all that precious time that should be spent attaining fulfiullment. You will find that if you enjoy your job and as a consequence, work hard at it, the rewards will natuarally come without having to think about it.
Without work and the diciplines associated with, the majority of us would degenerate as human beings owing to the fact that we are unable to structure our lives ourselves.
We love to moan about the state of affairs in the UK but we are contributing greatly to our own downfall. If we got on with it instead of moaning, taking time off for colds, hangovers, SAD, multiple holidays etc. the country would soon become a better place to live. The "WORK TO LIVE" statement only really applies when it means that literally. In some 3rd world countries this is the case and funnily enough they value their jobs more than ever, and enjoy them. The work to live ethos in this country simply means working to gain (i won't say earn) more money to fritter way on unecessary material goods and partake in worthless time wasting pursuits, holidays etc. The more you have, the more you want and so the cycle continues spiralling downwards as people look at others and become less and less satisfied with life. IMHO the UK has become a too affluent nation which has clouded what life is really about.
Sorry for the rant, i'm pissed off because it's round to Monday morning again and i'm back at work!

Remster has some good points!
the company i work for has 700 employees, 500 based on the shop floor.
up until a year ago we only employed english (of varying race and hue) people. including maybe 100 temps.
Getting temps that are reliable is impossible - unless you get them from europe - so we now have 80 estonians / poles etc who turn up on time every day, dont go missing on the sick and dont disapear to the bog for an hour a day. They are paid the same money as UK residents on a 6 month contract.
And we only have ourselves to blame unfortunately

It's over 15 years since I last had a day off sick, heading on for 6 years at my current place of employment.
If someone is paying me to work somewhere I'll be there. Taking a day off sick when you are perfectly capable of attending is akin to stealing your wage for that day IMHO.

I have found a job I like too, I am off sick today due to not being able to breathe properly.
Considering my role in sales, the ability to speak does come in handy and hence I have been forced to stay at home whilst my asthma decides whether or not it wants to retreat.
Despite all that, I am still logged into work, making appointments, planning and following up on things, after all, the company is still paying for me.

As an employer I can honestly say that staff loyalty is rewarded ( maybe not by big companies though ) - knowing you are paying someone to be sitting at home in front of the TV pretending they are ill, or when they have a hangover is fuxxing annoying. ( Especially when the bottom line is that money comes out of MY pocket ).
And if there are any perks, overtime, special projects going, guess who will get them ? NOT the workshy git who thinks you owe him a living and spends half the day chatting and staring out the window, and doesnt pull his weight.
Same if someone had to be laid off, first out the door would be the one who isnt adding anything of value to the business.
I wouldnt pay for machinery that only worked half the time - it would go back to the supplier as faulty and I'd expect a replacement, so why are there so many laws that mean you can't apply the same principals to people ?
