To Powerseeker,

I too recieved this spam...

...I am concerned that Webmaster believes that he is sounding harsh. In my view his chastisment is not harsh enough.

Please do not send further spam to me, if you have something worth offering to Subaru drivers, the etherenergy would soon surface it if it was of any value.

In the interim, go away and leave us in peace.

I got it too

I actually get loads of junk e-mail, so I was about to bin it with all the rest, when I noticed the "Subaru Enthusiast" subject line.

I wondered which scoob related site my e-mail address had been pinched from.

Webmaster - though I haven't met you, I respect (and trust) you enough not to pass on my e-mail to third parties - christ it never crossed my mind that you could have SOLD our e-mail addresses! - Good to see you've issued an 'official' scoobynet response. (Could have been harsher though! )

None the less, I HATE this sort of spam and will now make sure I steer well clear of any related sites or products of powerseeker.

off soapbox & steam fully vented......

I got the spam as well.

If they don't apologise for their actions and don't gives assurances that it won't happen again, we could arrange a date and time to bombard their site and bring down their server. Bit extreme and anti social, but it may deter them (and hopefully others) from doing it again.

Actually visited the site and didn't seem to have much of interest (to me) to offer. Anyone with an interest in Scoobies is going to head for Scoobynet or 22B anyway. If people want visitors to their site, there are ways to register with search engines to locate their site without the need for spam. No excuse for spam in my book. Unless it's Monty Python.

Chris L & Nick,
A web spider. That is all. In 2 hours a software developer can write something that will pull out all the addresses on any site. In 5 minutes you can download a utility that does the same. Simple, I am afraid.

Just a thought Webmaster, sorry if it's already been mentioned, but could you hide everyone's profiles from non-registered people? Should stop spiders from crawling into everyones nooks and crannies.

Muppets spammed me as well.

Here's a lookup on the domain :

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:<HR>
Domain Name: POWERSEEKER.CO.UK

Registered For: Ereal Limited

Domain Registered By: ENTANET

Registered on 18-Jun-1999.

Record last updated on 31-Mar-2000 by nominet@nominet.org.uk.

Domain servers listed in order:

NS.ENTA.NET 195.74.96.35
NS2.ENTA.NET 195.74.96.34
NS3.ENTA.NET 195.74.96.20

WHOIS database last updated at 14:10:01 05-Oct-2000<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Looking at the mail headers, we can see the message came via a server called ereal.ereal.net. A quick NeoTrace later and we have some details for Enta.net :

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:<HR>
real (EREAL3-DOM)

Domain Name: EREAL.NET

Telford
Shropshire

GB

Perhaps we should all complain to Enta.Net as the chances the mail came via their server. Abuse@enta.net would be a good place to start.

I've just been searching the RS Board as the name Powerseeker rang a bell.

Excellent info Chris.

I found a sponsor of the powerseeker site & sent this message to them.

sales@directcarparts.co.uk

You appear to support powerseekers.co.uk

This company is actively engaged in stealing contact details from other Internet sites. This is a criminal offence under the Data Protection Act.

I am sure that your company is not also be involved in this criminal practise but I would appreciate a confirmation email that this is not the case.

I have deleted a message which gave us instructions of how to download an "email bomber".

To save me having to spend the entire day looking through this thread, can we please make sure that no further messages which suggest revenge of any sort are posted.

I am as furious about this as everyone else.

But we should not condone actions of vengance (sp?) or similar.

Kind Regards

Excellent info ChrisB. We should indeed send a complaint to abuse@enta.net or to postmaster@enta.net.

Let's give Simon a break here, and stop fiddlin' with large emails or mailbombs.

Spam if bad enough in itself, but if followed by - however well meant - more useless mails, it gets 10 times worse.

I'll get my coat.

Hi All

Powerseeker have asked me to post this message.

----message starts----
Dear Scoobynet member.

We are truly sorry for any ill-feeling caused by emailing some of you from
the Sccobynet BB. I can assure you that there were no malicious intensions
on our behalf.

I can personally understand that you hate SPAM and fully understand if you
never wish us to mail you again. I can also assure you that no monies are
being gained for the email. We are not selling any products either.

We only intended to try and gain some popularity which we seemed to have
blown regarding many of you from Scoobynet.

Over the next 24 hours everybodies email address will be removed from the
database and again we apologise for causing any problems.

No excuses - we were wrong!

Thank you for reading this post.

Powerseeker
----message ends----

I personally think we should see this as a very positive and (IMHO) genuine, well meant apology.

I think this was an error of judgement on their part rather than anything more sinister.

Regards

Simon

I agree, although SPAM is annoying; at least they had the decency to apologise.

Fair enough in my opinion
