Donnington 15th April...Who's going?
Ever tried left foot braking ? I guess that may be the answer - trail the brakes, then nail the throttle but use the brakes to cut down the understeer.
All completly beyond me though...
I guess this is where the scoobies awd comes into its own.

Jon, you sound like a serious driver! Start that thread, I'd like to know. Slow corner, up hill, wet, fwd - sounds like a nightmare. That trail braking thing would probably help with a Scoob, too - massive understeer going into the hairpin. But I wasn't trying to go fast there. I was seeing how long I could keep it power-sliding up the hill. Childish, I know
I'm nothing special in the driving techniques department. Simon de Banke's your man - he'll know. In fact, I'm pretty useless to be honest, probably like a lot of other Scoob drivers. Good power, 4WD, big brakes with ABS. They are so easy to drive fast they make you think you're a bit special. Put me in a Caterham in the wet and I'd be well pleased to make it round. Most likely off at Redgate!

Good to meet you on Sunday - if only briefly.
(I was in the 172).
I was struggling around the hairpin as well, and I have no LSD.
It was the first time on track for me so I am not sure if the lines I was taking were correct or not but at the hairpin, I had to take the wide line in and then get the power down as soon as the wheels were straight again. Otherwise it was understeer all the way....
It is a pity we were not lapping together on the circuit as I would have been interested to see how our cars compare.
How many track events have you done?
When are you next going to Donington?

yeah - there was a 172 at donnington last time I was there. We were almost exactly matched. I was quicker through copice by a fair margin, but he always made it up at the chicain (on the short circuit). Though I always take it easy through there, coz if you get it wrong you've got the concrete pit wall to look forward to...
The rest of the time we were equal.
Only started driving cars last year (always bikes before that) - managed to park an elise in a lampost at 30 mph on ice and decided that some tuition / track days would be in order.... That was my third time at donnington. I've got another date booked there, towards the end of the year, but not sure when.
I'd like to try somewhere else, maybe brands. A lot of the circuits look quite nasty for run off though. I've been round a few on the bike, mallory & lyddon were great, but theres nowhere to go if you get it wrong.

Cheers for the reply. I had considered Oulton Park for my first time but reckoned Donington would be a little safer.
Is the National layout any easier on brakes?
I do not lose mine completely but the pedal did go soft after about 3 laps....

maybe a little - i'd read that the gp circuit was very hard, but on the national the straight from copice to the chicain is longer and you have to brake harder (coz its a concrete pit wall in front)
. Whereas i didnt really get a huge amount of speed up between esses, melbourne and goddards.
I shagged my brakes early on the first time I went to donnington too. The only way around it is to limit your speed on the straights, and start braking early. I changed the front pads for mintex race things, and changed the fluid for dot 5.1 and im far more careful (brake earlier into the fast ones, try and do a single full lap at the end without touching the brakes to let them cool, etc)
did oulton look nasty then ?

I did let the brakes cool off for a lap at the end of each session and I also gave myself a bit more room for braking once they had gone soft.
As for Oulton, I have been there dozens of times as a spectator and have been round the circuit as a passenger as well.
It is narrower than Donington and in places it is only a matter of yards between the circuit and the barrier on a number of corner exits. I think I will build up my confidence a bit more first.....
I am definately going to have another go at Donington though.
