The PPG boxes are especially easy to build up (nice fit on mating parts), it's the taking apart of some of the standard boxes that gets a bit troublesome. There is nothing special tools wise except a few specially made "cheeses" to get under the gears when in the press, and a special spanner to adjust the bearing cups rather than use a hammer and chisel.

It helps to have lots of spare bearings, washer and spacers as they are the things that usually need mixing or matching when build werid combinations of boxes.

Always best (in my eyes), to have a go, and if you get stuck, then admit defeat, just don't go too far and 'crack' anything before the defeat gets to you!!

And sometimes if you havent got a clue what your doing, and stand to loose a £4 - £5k gearbox, its best left to someone who knows what they are doing, especially when it can be done cheap

All IMHO.

But David, Steven builds engines with just as much (or more) value.

If pushed for time then get it built. Basically, if you can strip it, you can build it.

I cut my teeth on my RA boxes, ended up building one good one from 3 dead ones.

Always wondered what happened to that car ?

Just realised insurance runs out on Sunday at midnight, so thought i would ring Gary @ Keith Michaels, as his name seems to be mentioned quite a bit on here.

What can i say, very pleasant to speak to, asked questions about the car i have never been asked by any other insurer, and they were just finding out the spec list. Inspired a lot of confidence in them. Took all the details, said he would ring me back shortly, which he has just done.

Car now fully insured via Keith Michaels, all modds declared, fully comp, wife on policy, protected no claims, all at a very sensible price.

Very impressed.

Amazing what difference being 30 makes to your insurance.

Yep: 30 years since I have passed my test! (actually 34 years...)

Anyway: you will ALL get to the same position as me eventually!

Ron: thankyou.

Slight aside, is that a Scooby Mania pod you've used for the Defis Steven?

Gary sorted my insurance out too. Still waiting for parts?

I don't know whether it's turning 30 or calling Gary, but the insurance has gone down this year

My quote for this year has arrived in the post today.....
It's gone DOWN by all of £10 to £655 for 3000 miles.

It will be interesting to compare quotes at the end of next week!

Glad to help!!!

Wow, what a write up, dunno how long i have spent reading it!!!

Am going to try to get up to Scooby Shootout to see it in action.

My engine is on it's last legs at the moment, and have been considering what to do when it finally dies. A 2.33 is a bit beyond my budget, but really fancy doing a 2.5 with Apexi management

Gary is a top draw bloke.
Spoke to him today and fully understood the car, even reads the Projects section on here (a man of superior taste...)

Got the car 'done' for just over £600 with all the mods so far, and with a very nice twist to the policy too.

Meaning you have got more than a 3000 mile limit?

No, 3000 miles is just enough to do the hillclimb season and a few jollies too.
The tweek is that the cover is for 'replace like with like' in a claim, this is a rare specification.

I saved 10% so useul.

Maxinsurance.co.uk (not as bad as it sounds) and a division of Firebond, insure both my Mi16 and STi3 now and saved me £600 over what seemed like last years reasonably competative quite from Osbournes! STi3 was £700 inc exhaust and Apexi and it only increased £100 pa when rebuilt as an EJ257. No milage restrictions although the pug is on classic insurace so only allowed to commute, no class 1

I did speak to both Keith Michaels and A-Plan, both of which thought that they could be competative, but that it wouldn't be worthwhile transfering to them mid-year. Fair play I supose!

Enough insurance, car is back on the road, and alive and kicking (hard )

Thanks to Lateral Performance, Scooby Clinic, HDC Subaru, Pat Herborn and David Wallis.

Still a bit of work to do on the car, as it has now blown a gasket pre turbo

Currently at 24/25psi, and its going well.

Gasket may be fiddly, as we think its the one between turbo and up pipe, which is a barsteward!

Went for PPG Staight cut synchro in the end. Keeps a full set of syncros rather than 50% of both.
