They also spent millions getting the engine right, including the length of the dipstick but you are prepared to use your own rules for that.

By your own logic, who are you to decide that keeping the oil level at absolute minimum is best for the engine when subaru recommend somewhere between the upper and lower limit.

By the way, I am not argueing about how much oil to put in your car, just that you are happy to follow your own rules for that and then dismiss everyone elses opinion on anything else.

Oil on the low mark on the dipstick to prevent it getting where it shouldn't is accepted good advice ............. taking tour ECU outside of it's design envelope is NOT!!

Pete, I have been warned that you are a wind up merchant, but you talk quite literally cow pooh!

The car from Subaru as it stands is set up to cope with the worst 95 octane fuel available, from speaking to my mate a Prodrive he said th std eng will run 92 albeit the crank sensor will retard something Chronic. There is an allowance built in for people that do not perform the service interval at the correct time and a certain allowance for others whom do not allow proper warm up before full throttle.

A remap and supporting mods (All DOT, MOT compliant) will allow the Air/fuel to be tuned to 97/98 octane (advanced ignition) and for certain stringent noise levels at government set rpm to be by passed. If a std car with no mods is remapped for even 95 octane this willgenerally improve the efficiency of the engine hence freeing up either more MPG or power, whichever you choose to use.

We have a UK car running just under 300 bhp and similar torque it does 33 MPG when driven selectively and certainly is not feathered, when driven enthusiastically returns approx 24 MPG. Mapping is a product of refining the system, the std sys can run in any country at most ambients, if you know you dont need to run at an ambient of 45 degrees why have a tune that reflects this?

By the way my father is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (Retired 76 yrs old) whom spen 44 yrs designing engines and setting them up from scratch so i have a fair inside knowledge before you preach to me.

I am unsure why even at this great time of year you come on SN looking to upset people you should be happy to be in the same ownership club.

If you want economy and power go buy an Alpina D10!

Whos says one is accepted good advice and the other is not? Thats opinion. Where do you draw the line. Is disconnecting the crank sensor to crank the engine after an oil change 'accepted good advice' (just an example please don't go through all of that again!).

With your dipstick protocol, you have obviously listened to advice, tried it and found it to be beneficial (or at least not damaging) and decided to adopt it as best practice. That is what others have done on here with other things (eg knocklinks, remaps etc etc).

Once you start following unproven advice there is no longer any definate right or wrong and you have only your own experience to go by. The problem is: you shoot down all the advice and experience of others without an open mind or ever experiencing it for yourself.

Thats is what we call being a closed minded old man afraid of change. You've got your hymn book out one second, then put it away the next minute to back your own opinion up. The only reason I don't feel sorry for you is that I know you love winding people up and you just get pleasure out of all of this, even when you know you are wrong.

Must say I have been in stitches reading this... a very good thread indeed. Somewhat off the initial subject question but hey!!

I think Pete has a very very small point in that out of the box, the scooby is a very very good package... BUT at the end of the day it is still designed for the mass market, as has been mentioned.

Any large car manufacturer has to put in room for manoever, so that Mr Twit can put 95RON in there, expect the power and the MPG all to be good. So that leaves massive room for development and improvement as you move into the higher end of tuning expectations.

Let's face it even Porsche are now producing cars that fit into a market space, with their Cayman S... That's not engineered to it's full potential and costs a fookin' arm, a leg and a left bollock!!

As a tuning aid to check fueling etc then ok, and checking gains/losses on the same day ok. But other than that they are pointless.
