I've just sold my S1 Elise (being picked up next week) had it 5 years but only really used as a fun car (1400 miles this year) which is basically the reason for selling it. That & we've just had a baby so need something a bit larger than the wifes Saxo, so we're selling both & getting an Sti
Servicing. Yearly £180, £180, £280, £180, £180, £500. Not gonna break the bank.
Maintainance: In 5 years I(25000 miles) I've had 2 sets of tyres (one was on car) 1 steering rack & 2 trackrod ends. Changed cambelt.
Styling is always gonna be subjective, never really liked the S2 or the VX. Not driven either of them so can't compare though I'd imagine them both to be softer than my Lotus Sport Suspension set up.
Gonna miss the Elise but for the amount of time I get to actually use it I think I'll enjoy the Sti more especially as I can get the family in it.

Please don't remind me again, I'd rather be able to buy one in 3-5 years time without people laughing at it...

Got an elise S1. Its slightly sharper and more involving than the VX. Neither is really practical but the VX is better in that respect. The Elise has been totally reliable to date.
Although I love the Elise as a weekend car I couldnt own one as an only car. See comments above about contortionism not being able to carry luggage and see past traffic.
I dont think you'll ever get a definitive answer to the VX vs Elise debate as it comes down to personal preference really.

This thread is full of ignorance and 2nd hand information. I own a 05 S2 111S and I did my homewrok on this subject.
Early S2's had head gasket problems because this was before Rover actually bothered to address the weak points on the engine, this coupled with idiots ragging the car from cold created a number of HG failures. Rover uprated specific parts of the engine (nylon parts for steel parts I believe) and now there are very very few cases of failure. If you look after your engine, let it get up to temperature (which you should do with any engine) you will be fine.
Early VX220's had starting problems due to electrics not being shielded from the wet properly. The roofs leaked really badly (but the problem was / can be fixed) and the interiors become tatty extremely quickly.
The VX220 does have a 2.2 and when you compare it to the standard S2 elise (120bhp) yes the VX is a faster / cheaper car. However when you compare it to the 111S and 111R then no, it is not faster.
Basically you need to say how much you want to spend on the car, as you cant even compare the two because Elise's are considerably more expensive. If you are going to spend towards the cheaper end of the scale then get a VX220, but if you are spending more then get an Elise.
I can give you a whole load more on information on the two if you want, but you really need to not base your decision on what has been said in this thread as 90% of it is crap.

Hi,
Considered moving out of a scooby into an Elise but whats the situation with the brakes, I test drove a standard 120bhp one today and it was like putting your foot on a piece of wood. The saleman told me this is because they have no servo assist. This coupled together with a gear stick which sticks into my leg whilst in 5th puts me off. A shame because I really wanted to like it.
Apart from those points they look ace and accelerate suprisingly well but based on those points mentioned I couldn't move to one.

ive owned an elise, and loved the brakes, yes they take time to get used to, but are great, at say 80 the elise stops much better than my wrx, i think the abs is crap on the wrx.
i prefer the look of the elise s2 over the vx by a long way, but im thinking a vx220 will be easier to run and runnin costs cheaper as it will be a day to day car,
