A standard 944 which model standard 944,,i doubt the very first 2.5's would fend off a wrx, they couldnt pull the skin off a custard.......S2 however would beat it no probs imo.

Only decent 944 was a Turbo, although many of them are now abused and useless. Even the good ones look like 'a walnut' to quote my friendly local OPC salesman and leave most people in the know thinking either a)the driver can't afford a proper Porsche or b) the driver is one of those sorts who doesn't realise that watercooled and front engined isn't what Porsches are all about.
Personally I hate the way they look, but sitting in and driving a sorted one makes you realise they were pretty good cars. I'd take a chipped Turbo with MO30 over a 968CS anyday.

Well maybe, but anyone I've known who has one always wanted a Turbo. My thinking therefore is that a bit like a n/a Impreza you should just cut to the chase and get a proper one.

The S2 is about 30bhp less powerful but notably lighter.

I think any of us who know anything about elderly Porsches probably already knew that. Most n/a 944 owners tend to lust after the Turbo though and who can blame them, it's a better car, especially when chipped.

Nah just better, the S2 is generally chosen by people who perceive the Turbo to be more expensive to run and buy. Or as I like to think of them cheapskates who bought the wrong car.

Evo suggest the S2 is "ultimately more satisfying".

I had a good Turbo, wish I'd have test driven an S2 before getting too wrapped up in stats and pub talk though. I *think* I'd have preferred an S2.

The 944 Turbo really feels '80s. I just want to wear red braces on my pin stripes when I'm sitting in it, speaking on my gigantic brick type cell phone

I can't coment on how an S2 would make me feel buts that's how the turbo made me feel Or is that not what you meant

Imagine having an S2 and getting beaten by a Clio though, or god forbid a bugeye WRX. You'd be rueing the day you didn't listen to 'pub talk' and bought the better car........

An S2 would hammer a bugeye on track.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to chapter 4 of this thread.

Nah, it wouldn't. They are all shagged and driven by people who presumably can't even afford the fuel to put in them. Otherwise they'd have bought a Turbo. Anyway imagine the humiliation of being 'done' in your Porsche by some crappy little french hot hatch...........

i heard the s2 was the pick of the 944 range ,not quite the quickest but at 211 bhp as opposed to the earlier turbos 220 bhp theres not much in it and it supposedly had about the best 4 pot motor in existence then .

Why? Whats the clio got? Probably about the same i would guess. Similar power and weight to so not much in it. There will be some other reason though that the clio lost. Probably didnt suit the drivers style or something but then it was a girl driving so you would think she would have preferred the clio.

Do you need us to explain how engines work? Do you also struggle to comprehend how a Formula 1 car is faster than a vw/bmw turbodiesel even though it also has less torque?

yes clio is 148lbft torq, i was always led to believe torq was your acceleration and bhp was it maxed out. very confusing as golf tdi has 236 odd lbft torq.- 221 for wrx
