Searching for the perfect Chassis

I think I'll have to use 18" or 19" next year as I've bought a set of Ap 6 pots x 355mm off ebay for peanuts.
I ran my 17" Avon slicks at 30 on the advice of Carman. Made a mistake one morning session of running them at 24 and very different and a bit slower. I might try lower pressures again when I've got more time to experiment.

Having brakes means you will use them!
Those slicks were not the right rubber for the job, they were tarmac stage qualifiers iirc and they never really worked.
Roy in the EVO still went better on 1B dunlop DJ1's, but Rob ran him very close tbh.
Mark: All that unsprung weight!
Wish i had a box that could tolerate Avon hill climb rubber though.
Will you start next season?

The AP calipers and discs are lighter than the standard 4 pots and Godspeed 335 discs.
Next week is the big weekend with the engine finally going back in. can't wait to use the whole package in anger.
Andy F is sending a tweaked 20g which should work well with the 2.5
Yes I plan to enter next season. Had the car run as it did at the end of last season (video clip) then I would have been in with a chance of the championship.
I'll experiment with the 17" slicks, definately worked much better when the car was shared. I'll check ebay for some 18" wheels and slicks before fitting the 6 pots.
Might try putting 3 grooves in them ala F1.
Stripped out more weight with a carbon bonnet & boot, no AC and wondering if you can ditch the PAS for a electric rack from a renault etc.
I'd like to do an event up North, may be Harewood and to meet John Steveson, so might try one in Scotland

Are you going to do Terry's Hill climb/sprint championship?
I want to see how much quicker the 2.5/6 speeders are to my humble 2 liter/5 speeder, and are they capable of catching/beating the EVO I've never beaten (450+ bhp etc)
We do a practice weekend at Loton Park Mark in early April, but you have to join the club to participate. Good place to try the car?
Graham.

Might try one or two if they are not miles away from Kent. Wife not happy about my plans to race next year, higher priorities like decorating the kitchen and hall way etc.
Loton Park might be a bit far for a test day.

911, the scottish championship only requires tyres to be e marked and not remoulds
tried a variety of pressures and on some hot days was running 22f21r
Interestingly there is also an EVO running Dunlops in Scotland that trashes all my times!
Not sure what pressures to run the dunlops but going to start with 25f24r
the Group A alloys widen the track and make the car much more stable, steering is also improved, must less fidity. I am also running the prodrive/bilstien tarmac spec 50mm struts and with standard offset alloys the tyres rub against the springs, it need about 6mm spacers to clear.
I was thinking of entering some events in england for some fun, what can you recommend
cheers

Cash? What's that?
Thanks for the info on tyres. Time to think and plan. Really want to fit Avon hill climb slicks but I doubt the box will tolerate that.
As to UK events, the best for those North of the Boarder must be Harewood/Barbon Manor?
I hope to frighten myself at Doune next year just the once to see what John's on about.
£90 for the dunlops is very good price. Kumhos are £115 all-in per corner.

Guys, don't buy your tyres now, they'll just be lying about getting hard... rubber ages... especially the stuff used on sticky tyres.
Alex, Jim was using R888s this year not dunlops.
If it help and any of you boys from Englandshire come up, I'll put you up to save a few pennies. Would also save bringing tools/spares.
Can fit three car/trailer combos in drive, more on street, and provide beds for plenty.
John (quaking in my boots at the thought of some worthy competition)

That will be Mark A then....
Thanks for the very kind offer John.
Point taken about the shelf life of the rubber too.
Trackday tyres are not really sitable for hill climbs though?
Bet I stay with my Kumhos in the end.
Can a mild mod 2 litre bruise/beat a hot 2.5/gearbox set-up?
Think I'll leave it to you Young Guns to resolve. I'll make up the class numbers!

Thinkg about tyres now as the Season starts in just 12 weeks time.
I have run good times on road legal Kumho V70 sized: 16 x 205 x 45.
This gives a rolling dia of only 590mm max off the car. They are the Soft Compound, and have run about 5000 miles, but really are shot now, and 2 years old.
They do not do any 50 or even 55 section 205's in 16's./soft
I have some P1 wheels @ 17'' with old 205 45 Kumho mediums which were surprisingly good. They are duff too.
The chassis is very stiff and all that, and the new AST's with remote cans.double damping are to be fitted in about 3 weeks time, so thinking about sticking to Kumho 16's, but any thoughts from those who know?
The dreaded EVO runs 1B Dunlops, can't remember the spec just now, but that car sure goes round bends fast.
Should add that my brakes are stock.....

hi graham,
as you are aware i am going to give it ago next season, i will be in the lowest class i would think (but at least its a start) i will be running standard suspension (sti type r) with 17's. so what can i do about my tyre's??.. what make and type of tyres do you class as the best for what we are doing??. At the min i run on pirelli p zeros and i find if the tyres are cold or tarmac is damp they are really bad, but they are really good when they are warm. only problem is that i think the p zeros take a bit of driving to get the up to the ideal temp. and by that time i would of finish the sprint
also i have access to full geometry equipment, is there any settings for my car that i may benifit from??
thanks mark

Please wait for Terry to issue official regs.
In the Championships i enter I can run any tyre I like, Toyo's to slicks.
In the Scooby Championship I do not know what Terry will issue.
As to your car, you will find the car very 'exciting' on stock suspension. You will do alright, but you will find the chassis wanting, especially understeer.
For geometry I would go to PowerStation/Roger Clarke/ScoobyClinic or you can follow (as we all have) the Whiteline settings for 'fast road' or 'extreme'
www.whiteline.com.au the worst site you have ever entered, but it is all there.
If Terry allows just road tyres, i would persona;;y go for Toyo's TS-1's.
This is the very essence of hill climbing, just how to get the best straight out of the box, no second chance, no extra lap, just do it right first time.
So sweet and great fun.(when you get it right)
Beware, once you start....
The real trick is to focus on going faster than you did at the last meeting at a given venue, but the banter is sublime.
Come prepared to take part!

There will be a detailed account of the units on this thread from fitting to adjustment to comparison between the 2 systems.
I am hoping to have a real private track morning at a local sprint track to get the 'first-cut' done and then polish the settings at Loton Park in early April.
The AST's that are on the car were a major leap forward for me, and I gained a lot of time (and confidence) from the car and driver (!)
The engineering of the 'remote' system is really high (as are the current units) and the old AVO's look silly in comparison.
I am being 'loaned' the remotes from Powerstation for development purposes in hill climbs but they want all the detail, posative and negative so are very open about the task.
It is great to be in this position, but I will share everything on this thread.
Tyres are my current dilema. Glad the Autosport Show is soon!

My view on D01Js is based on my mate's Evo VII (he runs them) and my own Toyo R888s. The R888s provide instant grip, the D01Js take a while to heat up. On track days I waste him on the first lap, then he starts to claw back the gap. All other things equal I think his car is a bit faster than mine.
The R888s go off extremely quickly (4-5 laps) the D01Js don't appear to go off at all within a reasonable timespan (at least 10 laps). So I think he D01Js are very suitable for track days but less so for hillclimbs/sprints where you need immediate grip, unless of course you can warm them up first.

A bit more than that so I can compare on paper them against the Kumho V70 series.
The Kumho's are traction AA and heat range A with a wear rate of 80
A toyo TS-1 is A A 280
A D01J ?? ? ?
Generally if a tyre is AA and wear rate is less than 50 you almost have a slick tyre compound.
The Dunlops are good, my main rival (EVO5) is on them, so tempted by a change from the Kumhos which have been really good.
Thanks David. Still welding?

Carlos: Dead right!
The Kumhos are 'on' from cold especially in soft compound form, yet will give 4000 road miles and 20 hill climb meetings.
Great feed-back.
Thanks, Graham.
