You all need to see that these are HILLCLIMB slicks.
Special because they heat super quick and dissapear very quicly, probably 1/2 lap of Donnington or less.
As Rob and i know, the Kumho's are very similar, especially the soft ones.
There is no need for warming, they work fresh from the box.

I have seen a Gould have fresh tyres fitted, and win FTD with no scrubbing etc!

These tyres are a special brew for me and were developed for a very very fast road saloon some years back before Rob was born.

With a hillclimb lasting about 50 seconds the pressures do change but not markedly I would think, especially at my level (very different to a track situation Andy).
I have been advised by 2 knowledgable types on pressures who came up with exactly the same numbers.

The weight saving over the wheel/road tyre is very noticable too.

Anyway, the wife agrees that this has to be a ***** out run on the car. If the trans pops then it will be a ppg deal. I've been offered an 'attactive' price for my V5 trans so if needs be i will race the 911 while it gets done IF it pops.

Hope to stir the old 911 into life this weekend.

Rich and Curtis have invited me down for a tweek/check.
Seriously thinking of back off to 50/40 again to find a bit more suppleness.

It will all be very interesting this year mastering all the changes.

Jesus Rob that will be stiff! I will be interested to see how that works.
I'm not sure if you could run those on the road?

I'm told the Big AUDI is up and running well.
Will be stunning to see it.

Damn that is going to be stiff I hope that it is going to be run on a pool table like surface...

On the other hand 50/40 might not be the right move Graham if you're going to run slicks on a reasonably smooth surface. I would at least see how it behaves with the new founf levels of grip first.

I still prefer the Pikes peak video in the 405 T16.

You've probably seen it, but do a search on "climb dance" if you haven't.

Too true.
Years ago i bought a video of nothing but Imprezas on tarmac/gravel/snow and this guy was on it alongside Burns and all of them!

It is a great video, must 'dvd' it some time.

Question:

Is an EVO 7 400 x 400 faster than my Sti @ 380 x 370?
The dark side is tempting me.

last year when my car was 325bhp and petes 402bhp we had a bit of a road blast and after second the evo was quite noticeably quicker, bearing in mind my car was 1180kgs and the time and petes around 1360kgs. Not sure how that helps but maybe a reference point, he also crossed at curb' faster everytime by a few mph.

I think the extra grip is where the real 'faster' would come from though.

Do you know when the A4 is first out Graham?

As in Practice Weekend.
It has run correctly at Bruntingthorp apparently.

God, it will be good to see it.

I do understand the grip issue between the cars but Roy's and Pete's cars are so 'together' my Impreza feels a miss-mash at present.
Going to use 1/2 a tank in the Sti tomorrow to get better tuned in.

I'm jealous, one of the disadvantages of the trailer route is the never getting to drive the car outside of a competition enviroment, especially after making changes to know how it behaves and get tuned in as you rightly say above.

Got my final instructions through for the curb' practice day on 18/3. Roger Banks in the A4 and Roy are both attending, should be an entertaining day out, some really serious racing machinery as well.

Bloody hell...
Don't you just want to do a European hillclimb, the Real Deal?

Reminds me of my drive this morning!

The new transmission is 'focused'/distracting/hard and above all demanding.
With the tall Continentals on (my road/wets for this year, wish i had some Kumhos on) the accelleration seems a bit stunted. This is due I'm sure to my ebay special Graham Good system.
Been given permission to get a new cat for my old system today as it's my birthday very soon

Anyway, the car is very much further away from the 'nice little Sti' position of the last few years, and is a bit of a sharp shock.
The grip seems huge as there is no wheeelspin (I havn't tried my 1st gear launch yet), but on some country lanes with hillclimb bends (ie Pardon/Triangle etc) it is great. I think it now shows I need to do more with the AST set-up, I think it needs more give in it to get the 4 wheels down.

To Curb:
It's Mothers Day! If I can get over I will (in the Sti)

Got Loton Finals today, 4x4 turbo corner, by the tea van - excellent!!

My car war driven back from recovery place today, no probs to report. More thorough check over tomorrow - fingers crossed.

Hi all
It's been a long time since my last post, so how are you all keeping?
My last hillclimb was at Longleat at the end of September, which went pretty much ok even though I was the only true saloon in my class on both days.
Now, Having just sent off the first lot of entry forms (The best way to loose those winter pounds) for my local at Gurston are any of you guys planning a visit over the coming season?

She thinks I'll stuff it there......

As to spring rates, now I've driven the car again on the road tyres then I'm keeping the 60/50's on. Bit bumpy but i think i need to start tuning the damper some more on a private track day.

I am trying to get my head around the start now with these slicks, gone are the blood and gore days of reve/dump the clutch.

Will be a challenging year to get back up to speed.

Watching Roy launch on slicks last year getting some crazy fast times he had all 4 wheels spinning after loads of revs and a dumped clutch by the looks of it, I would be more worried about bogging down.

Yes, i was observing too, but he has a twin plate in there and I think a 'good' gearset.
He never tell you anything.

You may well be on the best rubber Rob.

Slicks are common sense route for more grip, and I think you have gone about it the right way by getting the correct compound for what we do. Having never driven a car with slicks I'm not sure how much 're-learning' there is to do but pretty much everyone I have spoken to who has moved to slicks from kuhmos or similar has said they take some time to get used to, in a kind of forget what you know type way. I can't help thinking though on the last run of the august shelsley meeting in the blazing heat that you would be able to absolutley hoon it round crossing like never before on soft, hot slicks.

Hope you are right.
I've never been on slicks ever, but Dave Parr took about 4 meets to get the hang of them
Roger Morgan V8 in Cii changed over Kumho to Avons and it took him 4 meets to realise you have to be braver on them...

We can always put them on YOUR car! (with you driving)

I think they do hillclimb compound in 17's now at around £250+ a corner!?!? we will see how the season pans out, my main concern apart from the massive cost of course, would be killing my transmission in next to no time. However never say never!

Did BMTR give you any indication about life span of such a soft compound tyre?

Mine cost £799 the set all done for.
I would think a season and a half, but might last longer...?
