Stop bickerin!

Got the diff out today (and I ache all over...) and popped the cover off.:
This is the Kazz plated diff due to go into my Sti v3 diff
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...18diff0004.jpg

This is the stock diff:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...30diff0006.jpg

Question (assuming Fuzz is resting from the Stella)

Is the Sti stocker a plated or visc type?

Graham

Both the same, but neither look like the diff that I was sent a picture of to identify!

Doesn't look good.

The first one is the 'Kazz' I was sold. (hence it is loose).
The second is the diff of my car stripped today.

They look the same to me too!

OK: is the diff in my car a plated or not?
If so then I'll get David to strip and set it, and sell the 'Kazz'.
If the diff is a visc one then I've been......which I don't really believe.

All this fooling about with cars gets tiresome at times.

Don't suppose you kept/saved the email Paul? I didn't, but might just find it on snet.

Technically the seller may be correct it could be uprated as you can buy [ we have in stock ] upgraded plate sets for the standard STi plated LSD.

I looked at the pics on the link

It is a plated diff, it is not viscous, but it certainly isn't anything special.

Box dropped out tonight, record time of 3 hours! (on my own and in a home garage).
Clutch looks like this after 8000 road miles and 3 seasons of hillclimbing with 380 x 360 engine and sticky tyres:

It's going back in for another year or 2.

It was operating perfectly when i stopped using the car 2 weeks ago, but just had to take a look while I could.
It is only 8 K old, and grips like a good 'un.

Only get 380 bhp though (thought you would appreciate that!)

Yes, but i don't know the thickness of a virgin one!

I'm going by the rivit depth and the slots between 'segments'.

Only need another year until the ppg mod goes in and the 2.5 (I hope).
Prob be a paddle then, though after the one in my 911 I said 'never again', what a pig in traffic.

You still keeping that AndyF dccd controller kit you stole off me?

Graham.

Seems to have been years since I put something on here, so a bit of an up-date.

After a lot of messing about API have come to the full rescue with almost everything I needed!
Recently, someone called all the parts chasing 'frying your head' and that is a very graphic and accurate description.

However, the status is now:

API rebuilt my cheap second hand Type R dccd transmission and fitted a lightly tightened plated lsd at the same time.
Discussing in detail what I needed (or think i do) with David and Robin at API was most re-assuring.
Robin found some wear and corrected that (3rd Syncho) and the box was collected yesterday.
The other part of the box was my fruitless search (because JS in Scotland has them all ) for a stock dccd.
I have dismissed the Neetronics unit as it could not be customised for what i want, but their new Rally Spec unit might, but it is some months off yet.
Again API found me a kit of parts complete with the essential plugs from their Aladin's Cave. All I need is the 'pink' relay unit.
Although there are a zillion wires, most go to places very simple, like 4 go to ground! Even i can wire this thing up (I'm very colour blind...)

Finally, the rear diff and getting a plated lsd for a 4:444 unit.
Lo and behold, David had found me one, and popped the back off for a quick check.
Robin is checking it out and resetting the tightness before he will allow me to fit it.

I unusually had a stroke of luck and bought some stock 16's with really good (ie lots of tread) Continental tyres off an Snetter for all of £80.

They were silver (not gold thank god) and are being painted in my garage using Hammerite Smooth areosols.
The cold weather helps the paint to smooth out to an amazing gloss!

The blue colour should make the car a bit different....

These will be my 'wets' for the hillclimbs next year instead of the slicks.

Getting there.

The second stroke of luck was fitting the new box.

After my last fight with the transmission due to a Chinese made clutch alignment tool that was 2mm off centre (!) I made a ****-on guide at work special to the clutch.

So fitted I offered the new box up and grimmaced for the Big Event.

Jack-up, eyeball the alignment/engine position and CLUNK. It simply dropped straight into place.

You do not know how good that feels after the previous 4 fights over the years.
It is all buttoned up now, just the rear diff and the dccd to wire in.
Should all be ready to race during Xmas.

Type R on the right. Keeping the perfect Sti v3 trans as a spare just in case.

Wheels: Blue and shiney or what?

Graham

wow that's some major work with plenty of time to spare for next season, short box + slicks will be a serious improvement, should take you on to a different level next season. I might post some pictures of my car gathering dust still muddy from the last meeting of the season completley unchanged.

My big upgrade plans have hit the rocks so I better just give it more right pedal less middle pedal next year.

Not what I've heard!

Big fresh 2.5 with a twisted GT turbo, dog box, slicks and you are still 25 years younger than me abd about 40 younger than Roy!! (sorry 30..)

I think Roy reads this thread!

Share your bro's EVO and that will seal my fate:

Audi/Roy/Your bro+ you/maybe Zen/me perhaps.

That mean s2 points a meeting if I'm dead lucky. I know to a big Impreza after Zen's arriving too.
Time for another hobby!

Then I forgot about your Dad.

I'm feeling knackered already.

The silver EVO is correct. The For Sale thread explains everything.

That car would make a great hillclimber.
The 205 would land you in Sports Libre, but what a car for that $$$$. Too many '0's' for me, maybe Rob can stretch to it!

Matin: Whhels look great.

Those Rays are even nicer.....

I have a shot of a set of 4, but one is badly damaged, but a set for the light slicks next year would be great.
Kev, keep in touch!

Anyone got a 4 x 2 pink relay for the dccd? (fat chance)

What! An expert Impreza mechanic like me?

Possibly right.

So far this winter, NO grazed knuckles!

Paul: can you give me the pin connections for that dccd relay please?
Got the relay from D Tweeks.

Graham

ps: If I can't sus it out might pop over to meet you/see your hillclimb car () and get you to rig-up the diff lock on the steering wheel trick.
Get a Zimmer frame ready for me to rest on.

Graham, Make sure that you put the correct amount of oil in the rear diff. DO NOT just fill it to the level plug, as it will be short. The plated bit takes up the space where oil should be and to run it short is dangerous. If the book says 1 litre put in one litre.

You may need to experiment with some types of oil as the rear plated diff will be noisy on lock. Some people will advise you that it is broken, it sounds so bad. Castrol 373 will quieten it.

David APi

Good Luck, Thanks for the business.

Default dccd wiring diagram

I an interested in the wiring diagram for the dccd too.

Since sprint starts with a short box means I will be in second within the first 30 feet or so, I was thinking of a button mounted into the gear lever. Hold it down with your hand for off the line full wheel lock and let go when grabbing second. It shouldn’t be difficult to wire a button into the original wheel switch and might be easier than having a coil loom wrapped around the steering wheel.

Any one care to share it with me?
