Searching for the perfect Chassis
It was unexpected Tim, and that made it a 'fun' ride.
I don't do slippin' sideways in the Impreza, the 911 was killa for that trick!
For those who may not visit 22B I spent today going over the car just incase something was amiss although it drove home a treat last night from the event.
Bit alarming what I found...
After fitting my new quick rack (sourced from API of course,) I checked the AST damper settings, all 12 of them.
Some sod had been changing the settings!
The 4 adjusters under the bonnet were everywhere and different to each other.
We all leave our bonnets open so Joe Public can oooggle at the cars, part of the fun, but some have been 'tuning' my suspenders...not nice and dangerous.
Everything is back together now.
The quick rack has added a touch of alertness to the steering and is very nice. Bit of a pain to do but ok; took me 3 hours! (I am only a 2 spanner rated oldie)
I've softened the rear roll bar too to try to calm the oversteer.
The slicks are working great on the rears, but the pattern on the fronts are a bit strange, and the consensus in the paddock yesterday is they are under inflated at the front.
Racing next weekend at the picturesce Barbon Manor in the Lake District so we can see if the settings are good or great!
Actually enjoying the bloody car now!
That's typical, just when i am/was ready to sell and return to the trusty (read SLOW) 911.
Graham.

Hi Graham,
Even though I did not catch up with you on the sunday,(did not make the saturday) I have to say it looked bloody scarey, but having read your thread, it might go some way to explaining why. not sure if changing your spring rates may be the way forward, would have looked at the roll bars first.
Saying that, your results are still moving forward, so all`s not lost...

Hello john, pity to have missed you.
The softer springs are hardly noticable! (road or track wise)
The rear bar now on soft hole will be interesting during 'testing' but there is no substitute for testing on the track.
The test day will get it optimised for sure (if it's reasonably dry)

I was there Sunday pm too. Nice to see the car in the flesh after reading all about it on here. I was watching at the start line for the second timed runs, excellent launch, looked like the DCCD was working well.
Thanks for that. With the new API lightweight flywheel and the slicks I thought I would have difficulty getting it off the line but no probs.
I can't match Rob's murder starts, so much faster than mine by a mile..
I think the dccd needs to go a smidgin' further to lock.
Did you notice any wheelspin bias at all? ie lots on the front, zero on the back etc?
Graham.

Having a nice surprise from Whiteline soon, some demon parts for the front end which could get the chassis back to balance.
With a bit of luck I can get the parts on the car for the test day on the sprint track and work from there to dial it all in.
After Barbon Manor my next event will be Shelsley where the Harriman Boys will be very very tough to catch, especially Rob as his steel 2 litre and demon turbo will be in full song, nothing like a challenge is there?!
Shelsey is a bit of an up-hill drag race where the tracks at Loton and Prescott are full of bends thank god which keeps Rob down for now, but not the EVO of his little brother..
Now, with my CDB under the bench and the crank...and the liners...and the turbo...a 2.35 might get me a tad closer to the Young Ones
Just where do you STOP?

Finaly managed to stay connnected long enough to uplaod your in car video mate, the small screen does not really do it justice. I tried to email it to you but the file is too large (16mb). If you can get your msn messenger set up I will transfer it across to you, you should as it looks great full screen, pm me for any help.

Had a fab run at Barbon Manor in the Lake District last saturday.
Brilliant timed runs with a Class win, but far more importantly, a re-setting of the track Class Record which has stood there for several years.
I managed to slice a full 0.6 off Richard Hargreaves' EVO record.
The first practice runs were in the wet/dry and on slicks too, but there is a surprising amount of grip with them. Had a few lurid slips/slides but nothing like at Prescott (see above vid off Rob)
The sun came out for our timed runs, the first one was just 0.1 sec outside the class record, so the second HAD to count.
It did, and the car was ballistic.
Never ever taken a class record before, so mighty chuffed.
Geoff Twemlow was also on a flyier with a huge improvement over a personal best in his cooking Shopping Car (near bog standard WRX on List 1A's) and I am very grateful for Geoff's encouragement over the day.
The new damping settings are much better since finding that some pratt at Prescott had tampered with the car's dampers.
I'm looking forward to the test day I have booked to tweek the dampers better and to understand the 3 way AST's better, but have I found the right combo?
The car is a dream right now, the steering is just great with the quick rack and the open diff off API, the new alignment off Power Station is working great, but I do need MORE POWER. (= 2.35.....)
The hill at Barbon is actually much steeper than the video shows:
DropShots Day
Geoff on his way at the bottom of the hill:
DropShots Day
And you know who:
DropShots Day
The dynamic duo!

Getting my enthusiasm back now!

Well done mate - good to hear I hope you didn't go too fast and the magnetic APi stickers fell off
Sounds like it's coming together for you.
Kind regards David

Thanks for the kind words.
I want to stop buying stuff for the Rice Rocket now and focus on screwing the most out of the car itself and build up my confidence to that of a 30 year old...
Have a solid test day this week on a private session on a local sprint track to try lots of damper settings.
One thing I did do is tweek the rear roll bar for Barbon along with my new guestimated damper settings.
I look forward to a return to Loton and Prescott under the New Management to see if i can get more from the current spec.
Hope I can keep this up throughout the year!

Thanks: I was a full second off it last year, so a 1.6 sec improvement on a 27 second hill.
Tweeks to the suspension all added up and I felt in the mood.
I also love the hill which helps.
Enjoying it now as Shelsley is next for me and you are all way more bhp than my rice rocket.
good fun all the same.
Obviously feel a lot better about the car ATM!

Yep, Sunday.
Really need to do some domestic stuff (fences etc), and the gearchange bushes on the 911 could do with replacing. Parts arrived fron the States but an awkward job all the same.
If I go there I usually end up being given a job...
I look foreward to seeing this 2.5 of yours and how you find the torque and delivery.
Rob will have cured the lagggg of his Impreza and Pete will be right there too.
You will all be a tight bunch: you need some real tyres Martin!
Good luck with the mapping tomorrow.

Again well done, good to hear its coming together...

I doubt if it will be any quicker, the gearbox will limit power/torque and anyway I think the 2.0 had about 350lb/ft. i think it should deliver the power 'nicer' though!
I'm sticking with roadgoing at the moment, anyway I will need a gearbox, turbo, intercooler etc first!!!
I'm keen to do more (Aldon) events next season but very limited funds is somewhat restictive!
I am looking into trying to fit RE070's (225/45/17) as I think these are the best (dry) 1A's you can get.

The big box of Whiteline parts has arrived once the delivery man and someone in the house 'connected' which has meant I cannot get the parts on in time for the test day this friday as i must be somewhere tomorrow night.
Some of the stock parts are 'welded' on with rust, the first time this has defeated me on the car, but these parts havn't been moved for 10 years so not too bad.
The mods will be most interesting.
Report next week.

Be good to see you and have a chat on Sunday, maybe you can introduce me to Dave? I may have more time on my hands anyway. More problems became apparent when mapping, received a call at 11 this evening. May be problems with the valves? as fueling couldn't be mapped right, the saga continues - ****!
What are you doing to the chassis now?

I think Dave is racing his Cossie on Sun, but will find him.
Can't see why the valves are a prob to mapping unless they are leaking.
The mods focus on Roll centres and the mods load the front suspension differently in a corner compared to how it currently is.
Private track day tomrrow to dial in the AST's once and for all unless I have them in the best place already! That could be the case as the car drove really well at Barbon (must be the driver of course
)
Changing the rear bar rate certainly helped.
See you sunday. If sunny it will be in the 911.
We are having a '911' month in July, I've entered it in the Prescott and Shelsley Classic meetings for a bit of fun and we will be going to the Porsche Silverstone in it too just to pose in the Porsche Club's enclosure....
Need to get the gear shift better before then though.

I've been told that the valves weren't sealing properly. There was 'stuff' building up that was causing them not to close properly. Only on one cylinder though and the same one that went pop on my last engine, so maybe the injector wasn't working.
Valves all re-ground and all injectors to be changed.
Colin working on it 'till 4am, engine going back in this afternoon so hope it will be running fine then.
