LOOK OUT!!

The ***** are in town!!

Put 95 RON in your standard Scooby and the ECU can't cope FPMSL

You do get a load of crap spoken on here!

My MY00 UK Turbo runs ok on 95RON - but I feel it runs better on Super (it is probably an illusion)

Come on Uncle Pete; you do it on purpose. As you know I have a JDM car thats is intended to run on 98+RON octane fuel. It simply cant deal with 95RON fuel; were it a Honda it probably could.....

That UK cars will run on 95RON (referred to confusingly as 'Super') goes without saying, hence my not having felt the need to comment on it. My post refers to the 'Hondas can so Subarus can too...' theme of the preceding post.

Does this mean that I wont be getting any pocket money this week?

Nephew Simon

I forgot COMPLETELY that you didn't have a proper UK car ........... but a proper one is what the original poster was on about.

If you will buy an Import, you just have to expect problems!!

Your Engine WILL probably blow-up

wish shell or someone could develop a "cold day" additive for my uk turbo as it hates the warm weather and optimax helps not a jot with that!

Lots of good info so far in this thread -- I'd just like to add my 2 pence worth.

Taking a step back, we could look at fuel itself. The octane rating of petrol is a gauge of how much it can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. Remember that the act of compression also creates heat. When petrol ignites due to compression rather than a spark then this causes knocking or 'detonation'. 95 standard unleaded can therefore handle less compression than super rated at 97/98/98.6 (Optimax), but at least it's not as bad as that awful American stuff (is it still 80-something over there..?)

The way I look at it is that different countries/markets have varying fuels available -- namely UK/Europe with 95/97/98 and Japan with 100. The car manufacturers build these little road rockets with the fuel readily available in mind, tailoring the ECUs to suit. Mix in some safety margins and some sensors to help retard performance and I think they have a good combination.

Manufacturers will recommend the octane/RON/fuel to use so that the car can be driven/pushed in the way it was designed, i.e. at full boost with the minimum of fuss when looking at our Scoobies here. Even though my UK Turbo should have 97/98 super being drunk at all times, it *will* run on 95 if I wanted it to... but if I start thrashing the nuts off it then there's a risk of detonation if the lower-grade fuel can't cope. I'm sure a JDM Impreza would also run okay on 95 fuel as long as the full potential of the engine wasn't used.

I'd be interested to know -- the JDM MR2 Turbo ECU is setup for 98-100 RON. Is the JDM Impreza strictly looking for 100 only..?

I run optimax all of the time after the Tek3. Once I put normal unleaded in because I was low on petrol to go on the motorway. Car was fine for the first 10 minutes and then it started to run lumpy and wanted to stall.
Car now boosts fine with a full tank of optimax but I still get hesitation at constant speeds but not while accelerating. WHY?
