Golf VR6 *vs* 205 GTi *vs* Golf GTi 16v *vs* Clio 16v

Its down to personal choice and budget. By now you should know not to listen to too much you hear on here.
1. You know German car = reliability
2. You know the 205GTi is a revered track car
3. Go and look at a couple and buy what feels right
4. Get on and do it, the worst that can happen is you waste a little time and money.

I think the concensus from previous/current owners is that with uprated suspension, they are excellent cars.

You are however in a good position. You can go and look at cars and one will jump out at you as being what you want. It will already have the right suspension on it, or have a particularly strong engine, already be caged etc.
When I bought my old girl I drove to Bournemouth to look at a 1.9 which was more like a 1.1. It did however show me what a bad one was like. When I found my 3 owner from new full service history car I knew it had to be mine, even if I had to pay a little more than my budget.
You will find what you want just get off your **** and start looking in anger

Not driven the ring in my pug no - not that it matters.
I've driven a STANDARD VR6 and a STANDARD 205 and the Peugeot spurts its w4nk juice all over the tank in comparison. As standard cars the Golf is completely overshadowed. Any car can be changed by p!ssing **** loads of money on it, but you never here road testers, race drivers etc praising the MK3 golf do you. Spend the same money on mods with both and the French flag still waves high
Not to mention the Pug has far far FAR better looks
(hows that DW? )

Guttman is very one sided when it comes to 205's for some reason, and wont entertain the Mi16 version.
That IS the best of both worlds. Having owned every variant of 205 from 1.4 carb to 1.9 16v, the Mi16 is leagues above the 8v. I like the 8v obviously, but the 16v just gives it that extra edge - the extra weight of the engine, minimal though it is, does actually help with the handling as well - my 16v is more surefooted than my old 8v and getting the power down is no problem.
So, a 16v version gives you the legendary handling, as well as enough grunt for the straights.
Gary - you really need to own an Mi16 version for some time, you WILL like it
PS Neil, nice work

I know TheBigMan and know he wouldnt be able to handle this nor the work involved in it.
I say it as I see it and as a ''ring'' car for the person in question the VR6 would be a much much better choice.

306 GTi-6 is another superb bit of kit Hot hatch of the year for about 4 years IIRC!
Have to draw the line though there DW, the 16v isn't leagues above - its none standard so a league below I prefer the low down 8v punch anyday! However, it is the best of both worlds for whats required from this thread

I am sure 16 valve 205 pugs are fast.....its just I see more than my fair share:
a) Failing noise tests
b) In bits
c) going home early from track days
It really depends what you want from a track car/ring toy.
My list is as follows
a) It must get me home/never let me down
b) I must not get overtaken/I can accept this in SOME cases
c) It must make me feel good, and it wont, if it cant do a and b.

OK - this was (is) meant to be used as a track car and so certain mods are required anyway (so it won't be standard).
Actually I think that quite a few road testers loved the MK3 Vr6 and it's hugely torquey delivery and changing the suspension to something like Koni adjustables (rather wise with an old car on a racetrack anyway) is only about £600 .... Most of the Pug boys seem to do this too!
I am a huge fan of the 205 - but for long fast circuits it does have it's limitations .... (BTW - I have also owned a 205GTi 1.9 and 2 x Golf VR6's - as well as a Mk2 GTI16V and I have just helped a mate build a 205 GTi with the Mi16 engine as a track toy)!
You pays your money - you takes your choice .......
