Mark, if you locate the battery in the engine bay as I have done then I wouldn't worry to much about a gel battery, I hav a spare that is out of a start charge, lead acid, 17AH and enough discharge to start a car with a flat battery, £20-30 quid on ebay for the Start charge, then just strip it.

4. Bought 2x WRC 18" magnesium wheels for £20 the pair, but need a refurb, hoping that the 355mm AP's will fit under these.

Not decided about the battery yet but will keep searching the auction sites for a cheap gel one to try.

Hope to visit the car during the week to finish off a couple of minor jobs

Is that man enough for 'road duty' John as well as repeated hill climb starting and it's short runs?
I'm keen to do away with my monster truck battery but using the same location as stock.

Graham, once the alternator is spinning it's providing all the current to run te car and recharge the battery after a start. I would say, yes more than man enough.

John

Do you have a battery cut off switch and if so where is it located?

Graham

Are fixed seat mounts bolted to the OEM seat runners or have you made some bracket up?

Thanks for pics give me something to start with.

About to order 12v 20AH gel battery and make a booster pack for when I start the car for the first time.

I used the original Impreza bolt holes/bolts.
The brackets are made from 25 x 25 x 3mm mild steel angle, cut/welded to fit.
Bitty job that takes ages, but you do sit low down.
I think TEG make them; also, Kev (flat4) bought a set of BIRD runners for a racing seat (Jap manufacturer) but he only dropped about 10 mm.

Graham.

Picture of the Clio with severe damage to chassis leg and upright sustained from hitting a tree at high speed and rolling the car. Been stripping anything valuable off it i.e. 2x GRP seats for the Subaru and various braided pipes. I think Graham you asked to see this.

Nearly finished with the majority of the electrics in place and now water is all plumbed in.
I need one more fuel line and to plumb in the PS, might get a chance to do a bit more tomorrow.

Bought some WRC magnesium wheels off ebay for £20, which I know won't fit without machining but can anybody say if this damage can be repaired. I cannot believe how light these are must be 5kgs max

I doubt that will fix, however magnesium can be welded.. by someone that knows what they are doing.

And if they don't know what they are doing.. do you get a massive blinding ball of white fire? (like the old chemistry lessons)

If the other 3 are good, then I'd suggest ringing rally spares people for one wheel. It may be something someone has one or two spares of.

The only people i know Mark in the Midlands is a Co called Bropel in Aldridge.

You might want to call them.
They are specialist welders and might have a web site.
Magnesium is a very unstable material.

However magnesium wheels are a little different to magnesium ribbon found in schools, normally submurged (sp) in oil though..

Mark, I can recommend people, but they are all in yorkshire!

You could try Yellow Pages for local welding suppliers. They have reps out and about who know who does what in the area.

David my parent live in Leeds so Yorkshire is not a problem, gives me reason to visit them.

Do I have it welded first then straightened or the other way around?

Actually, they're not! Just much bigger so more difficult to get enough heat into them to ignite them. There have been magnesium fires at race events over the years.

Right

Quick update

Bargains on E-bay are still possible, £10 this cost (the alloy one)

Two more pictures of the engine bay

Progressed today with the radiator back in, battery just needs securing and connecting. Power steering adapter plate needs trimming and the inlet connecting pipe needs shortening.

Very very close to trying to start it

Yeap Graham

Been finishing it off today

Still having problems with the sump, the 2x bolts closest to the flywheel, how **** do you do these up? Do you need to remove the steering rack??

Changed the topmounts to mirror yours & John's setup

Finished fitting the air filter

Started fitting the gauges and wiring

Filled it with water, just need to check engine oil level, gearbox level a bit high but sure it wont hurt.

The wired up the little battery, disconnected cam sensor and turned it over, really pleased with the battery; numerous fuel leaks which I've now sorted, slightly worried that the fuel pressure dropped off within about 5 minutes of turning over. Thinking about hydraulic lock, best to try turning it over by hand before trying to start it.

Not happy with the PS bracket/adapter might try to source another this needs sorting on Friday also need a shorter belt as 2x previous ones about 1" too long

Forgot need to fill the PS system up

Hope to take Friday off to get it running, sorry no pictures forgot to take my camera

Sounds very promising.
My (3 bar) pressure decays in about 3 mins, no injector leaks at all, so pressure is venting somewhere not 'dangerous' to man or beast.

Pics essential next time!

Yes Mark, and followed it, but it got rich for me.
However, it was an interesting part! The cat was bloody huge!(not ppp I think)
Keeping an eye on the 2 gearbox/diffs at present...

Those sump pan bolts are a wind-up surely?

We are half way through this season and you aren't even run-in yet!

I wish it was a wind-up Graham. Tell me about the season, I'm bored not racing.

Went for £168 not a bad price

You have been 'out' for 18 months now!

You have a great engine/box/clutch that can take a set of slicks with confidence, and 'my EVO friend' doesn't race down South!

It's all on a plate for you!!
I'm bored not having anything to do on the car; I'll have to start on repairing Bathroom No 2 soon.

Graham.

pull the plugs and turn it over to check for fuel leaks, if using the starter then make sure it cannot spark.. 5minutes sounds fine though..

mind you before you start a new engine you want the plugs out, remove the crank sensor and the injector plugs and turn it over a couple of times by hand and then on the starter motor to get oil pressure before you even think about trying to start it.
