Scooby ownership, low annual mileage, no risk of theft.... sounds like a no brainer

Just so I'm clear, are you thinking of getting a WRX or an Sti ?

How much is a standard WRX then in your country ? I would have thought with all the extras you had there that you were in danger of costing more than an Sti anyways..

Are Sti's really that more expensive to run ? In all the discussions I've seen on this BB about WRX vs Sti I can honestly say that running costs have never featured highly. The debates centre around looks / usability / potential to upgrade etc..

"empty" STi with metallic paint costs £29.900

fully loaded WRX with all possible optional stuff costs £23.600 (base WRX is for about £21.000)

In the uk we can get the prodrive performance kit 'PPP' which takes the WRX up to approx same performance as the standard Sti and still keeps the Subaru warranty. Do you have such a thing ? If so a WRX with PPP (like mine) or equiv is a real Golf killer imo

hmmm, never heard of anyone with PPP kit here... must ask the dealer but i doubt its possible to get it here... probably the only way how to get it is to bring it from UK by myself, or maybe they will have it in Germany or Austria... but good point!

Careful - no point in getting PPP if your national (regional?) dealers don't recognise it - plenty of cheaper ways to get extra power and invalidate the warranty

Brendans right - my main point though was that the WRX is gagging to be modded, it's actually a much better all round car with PPP or equiv, better low down torque , more power all through the range etc (plus the releasing of that fantastic flat four burble sound)

If fuel is that cheap, get the WRX for sure.

I cant understand how a hatchback at £20K can ever be considered good value compared to the WRX.

BTW, in Portugal when I looked they didn't offer the PPP as an upgrade but they offered a "WRX PPP" which had upgraded ECU, brakes, spoiler and suspension IIRC for about 3k more. So it might come in different guises. You can also ask Prodrive directly, and they might tell you "not now but we're working on type approval for that country" or summat - Nick Wadeson v. helpful on here when I asked about Portugal.

147_TS Get a subaru. You'll always wince when they zoom past you and your Golf otherwise. Germans? Pah!... ALL HAIL JAPAN!
I had an 01 WRX in standard form and the peformance in the real world won't be that different to the new 200bhp Golf GTI!! The scoob may be quicker to 60mph but not much in it to 100mph. You try burning off one while in motion. I was quicker in motion than the Golf 1.8 Turbo (150bhp) but not that much quicker.

I like the new Golf GTi but only with the optional 18 inch rims and DSG box with Multi function steering wheel. The cloth on the seats looks terrible so leather would have to be factored in , along with metallic paint making it very pricey for a hatchback. The bog standard GTi just isn't special enough. I personally would wait until the Audi S3 FSI variant comes out or the BMW 1 series sporty models come out. MKIV Golf GTis have terrible residuals and this will probably carry over to the new model in 2 / 3 yrs time.

Default WRX all the way!

As you get snow and your fuel is cheap then no contest, the WRX wins hands down. No point in having 200 bhp through the front wheels on snow...the WRX is after all a road going rally car, perfect for snowy conditions. The Golf Gti is an excelent car but believe me, it will be as common as sh*t soon, just like Mini's are now.

You need to now go to the tread about depreciation and how much you lost on a car

**** it... i found out that the estimated price for well-equipped Brera 3.2 V6 Q4 would be around £40.000 for that price i can have STi tuned to 300+bhp

so back to the Scooby !!!

but i will probably wait for the new MY06, kinda like the new styling (except of the tail-lights)
