Novice DIY 2.5 build
Funny, I dreamt last night that I should build a new engine this year, ready to drop in when my high miler gives in... (currently 130000, with 3K per month...)
Then again - maybe I should find a discarded 2l and rebuild it instead....
I guess I've already fitted a lot of the necessary 'support' mods (FMIC, TD05FE, 550s, pump/reg, PowerFC etc).. - Just 'subscribe' to the thread for now I think
One thing is for sure - Threads like this are certainly encouraging - that block and heads shot looks great !
Nice one....

Can anyone wait that long?
At £1250 for the 2.5 and no messing, it would cost that to rebuild a 2 litre if you had someone do it for you?
Do you really need the adjustable cam wheels? Only useful if someone knows where to adjust them to....
Does a straight 2.5 with Sti V3 heads and the TD/Apexi/550 etc peripherals add up to a 400 x 400 engine? (Optimax + NF Map)
Bloody distraction this. Need a 6 speeder first before the engine. Might get the wife to agree to that......

iirc peccy done a 2.5 conversion and didn't change many stock componets on his STI V6.

Best offer so far for the EJ257 if the three that they have in stock are bought is £1400+vat. The said company sells these at 1600 + vat.
I need one soon so if anybody can come up with a quick GB or anything?

Yeah £1250 gb price. I don't think Mark does it anymore. I have being trying a few UK places that have them in stock. Really need to get mine up and going again soon its driving me nuts.
Sooner the better really.

Bats,
I will enquire about the price for a single engine if you want.
I stopped doing the GB's because of the tiime, effort and grief from the bread knife. I still have US contact and if you could find a couple of others it would reduce the price. The other problem is the time it takes to sort out a GB, if you want ASAP then import one yourself, via a vat reg company/friend.
The GB of £1250 will have reduced slightly as the dollar went up, the price also included 1.4mm head gasket set
I would recommend that you at least change the pistons if you want to up the boost.

hi mark i am still interested in an ej257 have tried to call you a few times the one that you told me about was a bit to much spec .still having problems sourcing a six speed at decent money though.
cheers david

How are you finding the 6 row link for niceness of driving?
Do you have any dyno plots?
When i swapped me ej257 in i never had any problem with that water pipe going from an ej20k-ej257.
Also what clutch are you using.

megrac.
i spend abot 4hrs in this car yesterday and i have to say its very smooth for driving.
can be a little tempremental in traffic and idle can sometime fluctuate, but that may just be a tweak to the map needed (Links arent too hot on warm starts and idling)
Iain was showing that if you had an EJ20G then the water pipe would need to be modified, which he did, then decided to use the original one from the old engine.
not sure on clutch...I'll let Iain fill in the rest

chears thanks for that SoobyDuck.
i have the same project going at the moment with my ver3 sti, mine just has a slightly differant turbo and a fmic. i just need to get this link tuned but i live 2.5 hours away from my tuner.

The water cross pipe only needs modding if your using the Pre97 pipe.
The later pipes take a slightly different route so miss the extra crankcase breather.
I think the 6 row Link is OK it could be smoother but then that could be down to the mapping so far. All mapped with the hand controller.
No dyno plots yet, planned for mid Feb.
Clutch is a Lateral Performance organic one that I was using on the old engine. Very happy with it on this engine also
I don't have a map you could use unfortunatly, sorry.

i'm not shaw if the factory map that comes with the link was made for the 380's or the 440's. if it was made for the 440's it could be interesting as 550's and 2.5L are both just 25% more than 440's and 2L.
Did you have to change alot to get your link to run with the 550's and the 2.5?
The factory computer runs this vehicle fine with no problems but i'm unshaw how it would like the 550's as i don't have an adjustable reg.
i do have an fse reg(that sux and i don't use) but if i wanted static fuel pressure to be in the 30psi's for the 550's it would mean at idle it would only be about 15psi witch is too low. i don't know whats wrong with it but i took it off as it would change its pressure every time i used the car and the differance between the pressure hose on and off was about 20psi instead of about 10psi.

I was told to fit the 380's and it would be OK on the std ECU with no boost
I only moved it in and out of the garage like this.
I didn't map it so couldn't tell you how different it is to std
Do you have a Lambda Link?
I suspect you'd be fine to run on the 380's to get to the mapper. Then fit the 550's there (30 mins job)
Best check with them first though!
