Wink

Brian,

You coming up for TOTB then? I'm off to meet Simon on the Saturday (day before) so I can get my car mapped. I've got the PFC, Commander, AVC-R, 22B 440's & Megan headers. I've opted to save for the FMIC as i'm in no mad rush & Simon said he'd sort out a re-map once I got them

Hopefully my car will be a little quicker by the end of it all Don't think i'll be doing TOTB though. Bad experiences have been had at Elvington

It's absolutely fine, just needs fitting and filling with oil

Hi Bryan,

1st time I've seen this thread...look like you've been busy.
Who's doing the mapping ? Simon a.k.a Jolly Green Monster ?

If so , small world... he work's at my place.

Good lucj and I hope it goes better than your last effort.

P.S I'm running 310-320BHP in my '00' UK with a VF28. So you should hit your target of a relaible 350BHP.

Hi Scott,

How ya doing?

I thought I'd have another go, if this goes **** up again my cases will be packed for me and left on the driveway.

Simon will be doing the mapping as he's 20 minutes down the road from Barretts I'll be giving him a call later today.

Are you still mapping? what ecu are running? OE engine?

Speak soon

Sorry I missed THAT call Bryan.. been away mapping 4 cars since Friday lunchtime and just got home..

I can only assume I was being thrown into the back of a Subaru seat with det cans on when you rang.. lol

I will try and call you tomorrow or Monday (I might be sleeping tomorrow).

In answer to your questions, I don't need a lift there, and can be there any time after 2pm that suits you.. I have no other maps happening on Friday.

I'll let you get some sleep and call tonight after 7pm

The earlier the better for me on friday, I will be at barretts from 08:00 onwards as I'm going there straight from work. I still have a couple of things that I need to do but this will not have a impact on mapping the car.

Speak later

Bryan,

Yep, still doing those old ECU's, but only via Ebay at the moment as I can pick and choose when I want to sell. Rather then being bombarded via Scoobnet.

I'm only doing a few to settle a few bills and maybe pay for a brake upgrade and an Apexi AVC-R, once the bills are sorted. Also looking to move house, so it will help to have every thing financially all square for that.

Engine on car is standard at present, unless anything dies.
I've reached the peak of it's power before it all gets really expensive, so priorities have changed to the house/kids for the time being.

Make sure Simon looks after u. I assume he's sorting you with an Apexi. Or has he flogged you his old Link ?? (maybe not as it's the wrong MY)

This week is going so slow and to top it off I'm on nights and finish 07:00 friday morning just hope I can keep my eyes open for the mapping session LOL

I would say I know the feeling, but I don't.
But I do get the feeling I will know the feeling soon enough (if the wife has her way).

I was up at Aldermaston the Atomic Weapons Establishment last week and thought about dangling me bit's near somthing radioactive....it's gotta be less painfull then the snip.

We now have 2 boys...that's enough thanks !!!!!!

Seeing as it will be a run in map to start with that shouldn't be an issue.. lol
Altohugh perhaps high speed stuff might keep you awake better..

I'll have to add "If I slap you around the face wake up quick and brake" to the pre-mapping prep talk..

Believe me he was like a kiddie at Xmas when he phoned me at 7:30am to tell me he was on his way to go and give it a clean before mapping LOL. Poor bug*er, I didn't even have the heart to tell him he was making me late for work when it got to 8am as he was sooo excited

He should have it home by now at a guess

Yep, I was like a big kid yesterday morning

Come 9 o'clock last night I was on my way home in my KA , the mapping was fine Simon done an excellent job there and the car drove lovely and responded well and sounded awsome). To cut a long story short on the way home the car started running really rich lucky for me I had only done about 7 miles so wasn't to far from Barretts, Simon came back to where I was parked up and checked the map it was showing high manifold pressure so we started to look for an air leak, after an hour or so we decided to take the car back to Barretts. When we got back to the workshop Phil had a quick look and asked me to turn it over.....it didn't start, it just went click, we think that there is a faulty injector and this has stayed open and caused hydraulic lock.

So I've gone from an excited little boy to depressed dad of two and 3k lighter in my wallet

Hopefully the injector can be sorted.. hoping just a momentary stick open..

Let me know the progress.. I would like to double check the map once sorted in case it was partially stuck open from the start, better safe than sorry.

If I recall correctly you have phase 1 yellow top.. either 440s or 480s..
If you have trouble I have a set of 380s sat in the garage you can borrow.. can run it in on them and swap before proper map to something else etc..
Let me know if you would like me to drop them over to Barretts..
I could squeeze in a map alteration to 380s or a check is injector sorted on Friday evening.

I managed to fit my 440's badly the first time round and flooded my engine, suffering a hydraulic lock in the process...that was 40k miles before I took the engine out to upgrade it to a 2.5...and in that time it went from being an innocent 240 brake engine to an abused slappy 350+brake engine...and never missed a beat

Bryan, when Barretts fitted the injectors did they put the lower o-rings in the injector chambers first or slide the injectors in with the o-rings ready fitted? I know Alan Garrod had issues when he fitted his 740's in a set of Martins re-coated fuel rails. Martin investigated and found putting the o-rings in first solved this. Worth checking out in my opinion even if it doesn't tie completely in with the symptoms.

The O rings weren't sealing properly because of corrosion in the injector apperture of the rails (common problem) which I had neglected to clean out...I had rather forced the injectors in. Cleaned them up with some 1200 grit wet and dry and the injectors seated beautifully plus no more fuel pouring into the bores

Now I’ve had time to calm down and get the mrs off my back I'll try and answer a few Q's

Simon
I had a conversation with Karl Saturday morning, Phil rang him Friday night after we left and explained what happened. They think that i may be lucky and no damage has been done due to the fact that when we turned the key it just clicked and the crank did not move, which means that the cylinder that was due to fire first was the the one full of fuel. If it had of fired and the crank turned and then stopped this is where the damage would have been done to a valve or rod.

Karl will be removing and refitting/replacing the injectors as necessary, removing the plugs to drain off the fuel in the cylinder first thing Monday so should know more come Monday afternoon. Thanks for the offer of the injectors but they have a few spare 440’s at the workshop so I don’t think there will be a need to change the map.

Carlos
There was no fuel coming from any vacuum pipes so I’m hoping that there is no damage to the internals.

TimW
I fitted the 440’s in the rails, these were cleaned thoroughly before the injectors were refitted. I placed the O ring in first with a little grease, the others were placed on the injector and then pushed in as far as possible before the cap was fitted.

Carl
See above, I’ll pm you later about the inlet pipe.

Question
Will I need to do an oil change? I think due to the amount of fuel that was going in to one of the cylinder i may of had bore wash, there was blue/black smoke coming from the exhaust on tick over and cleared when you rev’ed it, also you could smell the fuel.

When the car was being mapped there was no sign of a faulty injector, why would it suddenly go and stay open? Has anyone else had an injector just go like this?

So, I guess all I can do is wait for the call from Barrett’s on Monday.

Bryan

In response to your questions; you should definately do an oil change, it will more than likely be contaminated with petrol, it's just not worth the risk.

Funnily enough I had a problem with my car when I fitted 550cc injectors in my case I had one injector jam shut (oddly enough it manifested itself on the M20 on my way down to Barretts). I did about 100 miles on three cylinders Pat and his trusty Leatherman solved that little problem

this is really an interesting issue ..... my previous engine also died because of hydraulic lock, although I had fuel even on the vacuum hose that goes into the MAP sensor !

Still don't understand why 2 of my injectors were jam open (also 440cc units), the only reason I could think of was that I increased the static fuel pressure from 3 bar @ atm to 4 bar @ atm.

Agree it didn't fire it was only the starter motor trying to rotate the engine..

fuel pressure was 3bar..

I cannot see it being an Oring although it is a consideration but it was perfect to begin with as the fuel pressure was holding etc..

Remind the wife you need this car as it is replacing what you will be losing on the 22nd!!!

After the two kids keeping me up most of the night last night and the conversation we had on Friday, I am wondering if your doctor might do a group buy??
