Sounds sensible to me, but, as you say, does it realy all make a noticeable difference?
Lets see if the experts shoot us down!

With a fairly small cat so close to the turbine exit you are more likely to get the opposite of boost creep, ie difficulty holding boost at higher rpm and/or surge at lower rpm.
This is due to the increased backpressure causing a reduction in turbine efficiency which in turn reduces the overall flow through the engine (for the same boost level)

yep, but a cat close to the turbine exit should also increase the EGTs .....

So is this all why Prodrive put their cats in the back box (see Flat4's Prodrive system)

For a clean exhaust, the cat has to run hot (enough) to burn the products of combustion to pass the MoT.
The EGT (exhaust gas temperatures I presume) are hottest at the heads/manifolds/turbo/d/p neck.....cat inlet. With all the wrapping on this lot it should be bloody hot at the cat input.

The stock Sti sytem has just one cat, similar in size to the Jap cat I've just bolted on (you are all rocking my confidence) and i expect it to be not too bad as it is close to the hot-spot.

Boost creep at high rpm. I don't sit at 7000 rpm for minutes hill climbing, just rapid blats up to those dizzy heights.

As boost builds and the w/g opens, does it not do this progressively?
ie, cracks open and then widens as the pressure is 'wasted' or does the gate snap open/closed via the actuator?
If it cracks open the gasses will break into the turbo 'exhaust' stream, but i find it hard to imagine the gasses leaking into the mainstream will radically disturb that main flow and 'dull' the turbo rpm.
Likewise, the resistance to flow of the cat will dull the turbo, but when I fitted the 3'' Magnex decat to my car after the stock STi unit, the effect was not as 'wonderful' as some have expressed!

Finally in this early morming chat, the sport cats at the Autosport Show were all much smaller than mine and in the very same position, ie close to the neck.
That's the TSL Group N system and the Miltek/Graham Goode D/p's.

It was seeing these proffessional systems that convinced me to fit the Cat d/p you have seen here!

Whew, got to get to work.
Thanks as ever for the comments, very interesting
Graham.

ahhhhh got my samco fitted today

managed it without moving the power steering and such

not sure if i saved any time doing it this way but i was past the point of no return so i just wraggled the dam stock one off

was a pita to get the samco one in the proper position but i got there
now the dreaded maf to samco pipe

well i cheated!
i took the silver ring out the end of the samco and replaced it with the slightly smaller stock gold ring that i prised out the stock intake

was a doddle
i plan to fit the maf to samco, samco pipe as well so i will refit the correct silver ring then

went for a small drive, seams to have more throttle responce (placebo?) it definiatly seams to boost more (peaked at about 1.38 this morning and i have just seen 1.43)

sounds are much louder, turbochatter is loud and the TAS piston recirc dumpvalve gives a little psssss now and again, induction roar is louder, and seams to change pitch at approx 6000 rpm (wondering if the pipe collapses? its a 3ply pipe thats not supposed to collapse )

need to go back to work now so i will test it up the duel carrigeway

I couldn't get the samco crush ring to budge when I tried

Other TMIC to turbo outlet has just arrived, so into the garage.
Just beaten my student daughter playing pool, so maybe luck is on my side

Pics to follow.

IT RUNS!

The hose dropped on just right, amazing what 15mm will do:

The TMIC was finally placed after the usual fight with hoses/space/lost knuckels/bad language and its all bolted up solid and yet more hoses clipped into place:

After checking all the high pressure hoses for fuel (for the millionth time), got the hose pipe ready, and a big fire extinguisher to hand (I was a boy scout once), the time had arrived.....

I cranked the engine yet again to get the oil everywhere, connected the crank sensor and turned it on.

Verrrooome-verrroooommmmme- tick over @ 2000 rpm

No buzzes, bangs creeks, hissing or spitting, just loads and loads of smoke off the wrap.
God it is everywhere as it warms up.

let it run for 10 mins, but the engine check light is on (?) never had that before, eased the FPR from 4 bar (with vac tube on) to 2 bar.

Is that too low??
I set the 2 bar with the pipe off as advised by the 'clever ones', and this gave 4 bar with the engine running.

Please advise!

Found a small fuel leak on the FPR and the gauge connections, but cant smell/see anything else.

So, the END of Phase One. Can't believe there has been an end to this lot.

Phase Two is AndyF/Apexi FC/Mapping on the 17 Feb..................

Jon, there MUST be one there somewhere.
Hope the Engine Check light can be fixed.
I think it is the 3 port solenoid....
I think it is the mixture...
I think it is that pipe you have spotted...

I think I don't know

Help Andy!

Graham.

ps glad you have enjoyed the pratting about!

Graham, congratulations mate. I'm really glad everything went smoothly for you. First time i fired mine up i had fuel pouring onto the block. Ruddy bargain basement o-rings...

Not sure what the CEL could be but then i'm never going to be any help in that dept, sorry. All i can add is that the only time i saw mine was when i tried to move the car with the MAF disconnected. I can see you've connected yours though.

One more thing, you/the welder have made an excellent job IMO of the TMIC. By far the tidiest install i have seen and a nice clearance gap over the IACV.

One final thing (really this time ), i've never been one for tarty engine bays but why didn't you take the oppurtunity to have the inlet powder coated red while it was off? You've made such a nice job of the FPR bracket/TMIC etc it almost seems a shame to leave it the way it is.

Anyway, congrats once more G.

Nice one Graham

I'm starting to get the urge to clear out the garage/workshop down at my folks place and get my car in there so I can spend a week or so of intensive effort on it so it can run again

BTW, what strut top mounts are you using, and are they adjustable for camber and castor?

Thanks for the kind comments!

Carl, the 'flakey red' manifold suits the whole car.....
Got to the point where I really couldn't be bothered to be honest!
Might paint it a custom colour when I go 2.2, 2.33, 2.5 (?)

As to the top mounts:

They are race spec MRT units that double the caster and the camber ( ) kills understeer DEAD!

Now the garage and my lungs are a bit clearer I will run it again to bake the wrapping.

I wonder if it will make the numbers?

Graham.

Ah, the Noltec top mounts part number N44003S I believe Thought about getting these nearly 2 years ago when I last played about with my suspension...currently have HKS Pillowball mouts which don't adjust for castor and with my somewhat 'stiff' suspenion results in too much understeer...then oversteer...or any combination of the two, all in one roundabout

Those are the ones except I thought i had the race ones! I obviously have the strrt level, but they have done a great job.
With these you dont need the ALK, there is enough adjustment just in these mounts.

Just an idea Graham plug in the connectors under the steering wheel and diagnose the Check Engine light mate

www.derekcarswell.co.uk and it is on there under ECU Diagnostics.

Thanks Jon.
a 'bug' has apppeared!
While the car was ticking over fast @ 2000 rpm getting good and hot I blipped the throttle and the 'tick-over' started to steadily climb and climb....turned it off and left it.
Just resarted it a day later and it did immediately the same!

1000,2000,3000...switched it off.

I think I'll leave it now and remove the Blitz boost controller and pipe up the 3 port and insall the Apexi FC to minimise the time Andy has to mess with the car, ie threading wires and suchlike.

Lots to tidy-up before The Man arrives to map it.
First hill climb practice day is at the Club's local 1 mile long track in mid march; not much time left.

Just found out that THREE Evo's are racing this year, and the slowest one had a new 517x500 motor......

Oh dear.

What more can you do to keep up on a reasonable budget ? From what you have said the class is quite open, so there is nothing to stop the big budget cars. How about a nice EVO 5 RS ;-)

Impreza outline body on Firehawk Carbon Tub Racer ? Would seem very difficult to keep up without spending similar money to the rest of your class

By having a better set up chassis, better power delivery, better torque spread, better chosen gear ratios...and more importantly by being a better driver

Easy meat Graham My car running fully trimmed was only 0.1 of a second behind this one at TOTB3 on the handling circuit. (35 second circuit) and he had been practicing all day, I'd spent most of my time on the 1/4 mile.
My complete suspension was bought secondhand for £500 on Ebay and was only bolted on 2 days before the event and set up to bog std impreza alignment specs due to lack of time.
Those EVO's are nothing special, well actually they are special but not any more special than a decent scoob !

Andy

ps strip and clean your idle speed control valve !

I hope you are right on both counts Andy!

Where exactly is the idle speed valve?
Is that the block which I had to cut/weld the TMIC to clear?

Thanks for the optimism in my skills!
Best bit about the EVO's is they are very heavy and have weak clutches/flywheels, will that be enough?
Still, I'm only racing for a laugh, right?

Answered my own question.
It is the valve by the cut-out.
I did remove it when doing the TMIC fit, and it did seem a bit 'coated' so maybe I've disturbed enough to change things or have a gasket leak.
I think the TMIC will need to come off for that...

I was getting bored.

Sounds like an air leak after the MAF may be. What happens when you disconnect the ISCV. It should be marked with white paint so it's easy to line up.

You've not done anything daft with the DV have you?

Hope you get it sorted.

Just got back from Oxford dropping my daughter off at Uni, was going to read the paper, but will go to the garage to have a looksee.
There are no pipes off I am sure.
I am worried that the inlet manifold gaskets might be damaged, ie a leak there, but the rising engine speed was well below any real turbo boost pressure.

I think this issue is due to air getting in changing the mixture, I had this before on twin SU's (anyone remember those?)

Just when I thought it was over!

not sure on twin su`s, i had twin 40`s once

they were pretty bad for the revs going all over the shop as well
