Type R is indeed a better car than a P1. Took a P1 owner out in my Type R when I had it, he agreed it was quicker. Before he got in it we were going to have a 'scientific experiment' after he got out, he said there was no point as the Type R is faster.
Type R also has more toys. If only they didn't blow up so often!
Gave a P1 a jolly good thrashing in my 996 lastnight (in a straight line). From 70 to 140 (well I was going 140) expected more to be honest, especially as it was wet. But then my Type R wouldn't have fared that much better at those speeds. Forgot how much they run out of puff.

P1 is my choice of an all round car than a typeR for everyday driving. Especially with second hand prices the way they are, the P1 is only a few grand more than a typeR. Also consider that some P1s will still have official subaru warranty, like mine .
If you want rear wheel style handling, poor fuel consumption, 16" wheels and something better suited to a track then the typeR is the obvious choice.
Had a typeR sti5 for 8 months, had a P1 for 3 and a half year, go figure

Oh so the Type R is better because its quicker, in that case i'll get a Yamaha R1 which is obviously better than any car cos its faster is better.
It takes a lot more than speed to makes a good car or we would all be driving Caterhams.
I have a P1 but never get the urge to slag of other scoobs, I put that down to being happy with my choice, I can only assume a lot of people arn't sure they made the right choice.

Pretty sure the P1 has the same ECU as an STI V, i.e. it's not remapped for UK fuel. However Prodrive had STI increase the amount of available knock correction in the ECU so it could cope ok with 97 octane fuel. This is explained on the P1 video (briefly).

Only reason i bought a P1 over an STI type R is that it has Subaru/IM warranty till Sep 2006 (and can be extended), and that i can get it serviced at any Subaru main dealer. Most (including my local one) won't touch grey imports.
Kinda wish the P1 had DCCD though...

Prodrive skipped the fuelling issue by placing Broquets in the fuel tank.

The STi5 TypeR is a more performant car, but not as performance orientated as an STi5 TypeRA. Better is a subjective thing you cant measure purely on performance, it's easier for Mr Average to drive/own but not as rewarding to drive and certainly a step backwards in terms of specification and outright speed.
P1's are basically normal STi5's in a 2 door bodyshell with some of the nice STi features downspecced to UK standard (air con instead of climate control as an example) and a few nice bits added like diferent rear spoiler (well the top half, the bottom half is boggo STi5), if you want similar handling charicteristics to a P1 and are not bothered about a 2 door body, buy a normal STi5. Suspension wise there is very little in it, and by now its due to be replaced on most P1's/STi5's anyway due to age/mileage so stick what you like on. The main advantage to a P1 is the warranty, but not all of them have this now.
Servicing wise you have lots of options out there, there are IM aproved specialists who will look after imports with at least the same level of expertise. For example Prosport in stockport is IM aproved for UK vehicles and a long established import specialist.

P1 was pre EcuTek so they had very little in terms of options for remapping at the time, it would have been economically unviable to work on a full remap so they chose the nearest afordable option which was to alter the knock sensitivity and bang some (unproven IMHO) pellets in the fuel tank. If you want full performance from a standard P1 use SUL and an OB as thats what its mapped for, running normal SUL is lowering its potential as it will be running retarded ignition. Still goes OK though.

Interesting though the GEMS board (Cant remember what it is called but used for the active diff controller) that Prodrive used on the 99 cars to remap that though. Or did it just alter the boost?
Funny things these Subarus

Just how can a type r be sooo much faster according to some of the threads posted here. If they both have the same engines then I can't see much difference. I know the type r is a little lighter but I can't see it would make that much difference.
In the above statement I am talking about both cars being standard. I don't think you can compare modded cars as they all differ in different ways.

As for the Broquets - I'll sell you all something that is half the price and just as effective - A handful of marbles to throw in the fuel tank @ a bargain price of £30? Any takers?
