How anyone here can say Sky is a rip off while the TV license is OK is beyond me. If you have anything capable of receiving a TV signal you have to pay the telly tax to our beloved BBC whereas if you don't like Sky guess what? Yes, that's right you don't have to have it - now tell me which one is the rip off?

An episode of The Simpson in America seems to consist of:

adverts, Opening Titles, More adverts, 5 mins of Simpsons, adverts, 5 mins of simpsons, adverts, 5 minsutes of simpsons, adverts, 5 mins of Simpsons, adverts, closing titles, adverts. No wonder it's only 20 mins long when they show it on BBC2

wouldn't mine the TV licence if you could opt out. The channel that 'we' watch most is CBeebies on freeview. Other than that I reckon the beeb fleeces me for about a pound a minute for watchable stuff

In the US an episode of 24 (the TV show that runs in real time) takes 60mins to watch including the adverts. When the very same episode is watched on DVD or BBC2 (without adverts) it's only 42 minutes long. That shows how much advertising there is on US TV

If you watch an hour of BBC TV a day you're paying about 30p an hour to watch. You're also paying 30p to avoid 15 minutes of advertising (using US model as an example) or put another way nearly 4 days of your life per year watching adverts!

If you look a bit closer , there are plenty of adverts on BBC ......

for local radio , other programmes etc etc etc

You are missing the point. I don't care whether there are adverts or not on the BBC as I very rarely ever watch it. The problem is that no matter how much or how little I watch it I still have to pay for it (short of getting rid of any TV related apparatus I might own of course).

Now why don't I watch it? Mainly because the programmes they churn out are all aimed at the 'soap opera generation' i.e. about as intellectually challenging as a Spice Girls song and any current affairs programming they undertake is now so heavily biased as to be unwatchable.

The BBC used to stand for quality, but not anymore. Of course when all your funding comes from what is essentially a compulsory tax you don't need to make decent TV/radio programmes do you?

I've grown up with the Beeb and yes you can argue about deteriorating quality - my personal gripe is the loss of sports to Sky but across the channels is a terrific variety of programmes to suit most tastes. As said in this thread compared with most overseas TV there is no comparison. DL

I dont class 2 x 30 seconds of adverts, per hour, for other BBC progs as commerical advertising, which is normally 15 mins per hour every hour.

I quite like the ads on the Beeb now as it means you can go and have a pee or get another beer just like you can on ITV

Fully understand the point.

As per above, you do 5 miles on the road you pay 6 months road tax at least. There are many things in life we have to pay for which we do not have a choice.

So, BBC's nature progs, undercover reporting (Trains and the Police one, to mention two) are of no interest?

My point is most people who are moaning about spending a "pint of beer" a week for a TV licence, would be one of the first to start moaning if the beeb started to show 15 mins of adverts, per hour to fund itself.

Yes, but if next to that road there was an alternative that was funded by advertising hoardings grouped every 5 miles or so then I would use that road instead.

we are very lucky to have the bbc.it IS the best broadcasting company IN THE WORLD.it is widely respected around the world as a fair,balanced and quality provider..just ask all those people around the world who dont have access to government free interference broadcasting.the bbc aint just a company there to serve pap to morons..sky and itv do that.the world service,radio as well as political,cultural and minority tastes are catered for.if u want pap watch sky and its 5min advert breaksthe bbc exists to inform educate and entertain..dont knock it..watch american or aussie tv to see wot i mean!!!!
