Too true Harvey, If i knew they were this crap i would never of got one but when i needed it they were made out to be fantastic
I even stuck up for PAR/Lateral on your original thread, how wrong could i of been

A few questions,

I really don't fancy spending 2 grand on getting my box rebuilt when knowing my luck 2nd or 5th will give

Don't really want the gearing of a 6speed but if i can get it all done for 2 grand then this is probaly my best choice!

So if i get a uk 6 speed, what are all the parts i need???....Do i need driveshafts/diffs/clutch/flywheel mounting brackets etc.... Will i be able to have DCCD-A with it? whats involved

May just try a STI5/6 box!!!... Will this fit or will i have to change diffs etc

Is a P1 box as strong/weak as an STI5 box????

Thanks
Scott

Harvey, fair compromise, but remember Scott is down south so suffers the prices.

Having had the 6 speed in and out of the car more times than a dont know what, it is heaving, but is fairly easy to fit.

Dave, i paid £1400 for mine 2 weeks prior to TOTB3. There is one for sale on bbs.22b.com for 1500 now!

Scott, save you fannying about.

Buy the box on 22b, get your *** up north, and i will fit the bugger for you.

All you will need, assuming your rear diff is still standard uk, then you will just need prop shaft and linkage.

So with the 6 speed, you will manage 10.85 1/4 like Gulli and the icelandic car?

You will find the six speed a good road box. Block shift 2,4,5&6 or 1,3,4,5&6 when you want and in the right conditions. The UK 6 speed has taller 5th and 6th, more suited to distance road work.
A six speed with either of the current ratio sets available would not be my personal choice for the best 1/4 mile times but then again, neither would a five speed, helical synchro.
Steven has made you a very good offer so think about it carefully.

Yes Steven around £3.5k I got it with all the bells and whistles such as full set of steel forks and shift interlock kit, it was also a custom set of ratios I specified to match a bigger capacity engine and run the 1/4 in 4th whilst retaining 180mph capability in 5th.
Trouble was I underestimated the power output I would achieve on my current set up, I estimated a limit of 500 due to std heads and cams and projected 130mph terminals.
Thanks mainly to a 'wee squirt o gas' I'm now at 550 bhp and 136 terminals which put me on the limiter at 8k in 4th so the next step is to change from 4.44 to 3.9 diffs to allow around 145 in 4th @ 7.5k

Cheers Andy. Sounds like with the 3.9's it will be great.

Assume you built the box yourself?

Yes I did. A straight cut dog box is very easy to build in comparison to a helical synchro box, only half the parts !
The reason I spent so much on a box was that I HATE changing them, this kit was guaranteed unbreakable guess what, the front diff went so its box out again....grrr

Scott,

The UK six speed was a doddle, you only need the box itself, the gear linkage, and a prop shaft from an Auto. You dont need a rear diff, you dont need drive shafts or any other brackets or mountings.
All in, mine was fitted for around £2500K including RCM's 4.5kg flywheel and VAT

HTH

Just a word of caution.
You dont need a rear diff, you dont need drive shafts or any other brackets or mountings.
Obviously you check the existing rear diff ratio is the same. UK cars have 3.545. Japs can be 3.9, 4.11 and 4.44. Just take care.

Scott, no problem.

Had a brain wave, and remembered i recommend getting the group N gearbox mount as well due to the extra 20kgs of the 6 speed. Only costs about £60

who sells these unbreakable dog boxes? PPG/MRT?
Do these gearsets go into you standard gearbox casing or do you have to get a new casing?
Whats the downsides of a dog box besides noise?

Andy,

i think christian is in need of your help speccing the ratios of a 6 speed for a ppg box.

BTW surly it is in your interests to go with the tallest final drive possible as it reduces the load on the output shaft and transfers it to the crown wheel and pinion.

I am looking at a six speed myself but was thinking of replaicating my 5 speed gears with a very tall over driven 6th.

will see how my PAR synchro copes with the torque (550lbft ) before making a decision like this.

I think I would be keener to go with the ppg replacements of the gears that let go on mine.

Pat on 22b had a modena dogbox for sale :

Uprated gearbox with Modena 5 speed dog engagement gearset, steel selector forks, gear selector interlock mechanism, Quaife ATB front differential, currently running 3.9:1 front diff CWP and 1.1:1 centre diff drop gears, but will change to whatever is required at a small additional cost. [mail me for full ratios, but it's tall... 5th gear is 0.72 making it taller than a UK 'box, works well with high torque engine]. UKP 3500 for the lot, ready to install.
look here : http://bbs.22b.com/cgi-bin/ultimateb...;f=34;t=000249

Adam, I have spoken to Andy F about my ratios for the six speed, he believes the forester ratios is the best, and that is what I should go for.

Nothing is unbreakable unfortunately - there is always something that will go fubar given enough abuse.

But, a dog kit from PPG, Modena, Holinger should be as good as it gets - and you reuse the old case (which in some cases needs some work to make room for a wider 1st gear, depending on which kit you've got).

Myself I'm running the biggest, baddest straight cut dog PPG could sort me in my 5-speed box.

Remember that dogs doesn't really make the whining sound - it's the straight cut gears that most of them has - PPG for instance can deliver it anyway you want to, straight cut synchro, dogring helical, and mix an match between gears (1-2, 3-4 needs to have the same "shifting method" pairwise however).

The dogring (no synchros) will make the box quite clunky, and you need to be quick, precise and very determined when shifting.
Double clutching will be a technique that you'll learn as well (helps downshifts no end).

Driving a stock scoob, and then jumping into mine will make you react to the sound...but one gets used to it rather quickly - think of it as a loud-ish exhaust, it's really less noisy than one would expect.

It's *not* for a daily runaround car however with frequent, and long motorway journeys.

Purchased a 6 speed today Thanks Frank aka Money

Now the light has been shed i did'nt realise that this is a fairly cheap option and probaly the cheapest in the long run! If only i did'nt go the PAR route originally Thats what you get for being blinkered by salesmen! it turns out that the 6 speed option is about a grand cheaper than what the final bill for getting the PAR set put in

Not sure that the disadvantages of the 6 speed is really for me but i've got a funny feeling that with the way the car is set up at the moment that it will actually inhance driving in every aspect apart from 1/4 mile

would like to thank Steven, Wallis, Harvey, Pavlo for their constructive comments

Cheers
