Tuning A MY98, Is 300bhp A Reality On A Budget?
#242
Bugga!
That Flat bloke beat me to it...
Now i've got it I want to look at it all the time.(Commander)
Need to fit a boost gauge I think. Another distraction as the 90 deg left appears from nowhere at 70 mph.....
Graham.

Ho hum, lumpy idle now with the new plugs. Presume that's down to the gapping. Will double check everything prior to the 12th never-the-less. Also discovered yesterday that my 57i K&N doesn't fit onto the APS pipe. Think a new kit may be the only answer if i can't find a suitable filter.
I've got to hand it to you Russ, that's cheaper than what i paid - although i didn't pay much more for them. You must sell loads at that price.
Kev, i'd considered the mobile phone holder idea but couldn't find one suitable enough. Andy (Peanuts) has the best Commander install i've seen so far. IIRC it's still a mobile phone holder, i just like how it's been done. Shame the same can't be said for KL + AVC-R.
PS: glad you're happy with the adaptors.

Carl;
Where can I get a Boost Gauge from that is reasonable, accurate and not too big? Oh, and comes with all the fitting bits n pieces?
I won't drill holes in the dashboard, so some ideas on best place to mount it appreciated too.
You seem to be The Man in slotting these things in strange places!
Graham.

I like Defis but they are very tarty, and probably OTT for most. HKS, GReddy and Apexi also make nice gauges and then there's the SPA range of digital ones.
As for mounting i think the top cubby is best if available. IIRC yours has the earlier dash though? If that's the case there's the A-pillar which i personally hate (obscures vision) or something custom mounted in a vent. I'd recommend the drivers air vent, i really like having the LL in there. It doesn't distract me or obscure any vision but at the same time is easy to read.
52mm gauge in there would be my choice.

PMSL, drivers centre vent then - and angled.
As i pictured the ducting can be removed from the vent surround very easily, allowing you to build whatever you fancy inside. Now is when you tell me your pre-98 vents are different.

Scoobymania do a nice 3 guage pod that sits in the corner of the dash under the A-pillar. It's ideal for Defis as they only need 1 small cable to connect and not tubes etc. for mechanical guages.
All you then need is another 2 guages
Come to think of it, I used to have a single pod that was shaped to sit in the same spot. Don't know who supplied it but at least they're available, somewhere.

No, i need the fresh air to cool me down in a hill climb run, but:
If I sacrifice the passenger's vent to the Commander position as per Flat's mobile phone holder idea, I bet I could sneak a boost gauge in there too!
got me thinking...
Graham. (never ends does it?)

I think i've got a good alternative to Kev's idea for the Commander, thanks to a very generous and thoughtful ScoobyNetter. Will have to wait and see what the postman brings over the next few days.

Graham, my opinions sound testy but they are not meant to be.....throw away the heater, heater matrix, vents and all that other stuff, it's only excess weight. Then you also have plenty of space for all the other stuff. There are many ways to keep the windscreen clear and getting 'hot' under the collar might improve your times too
Edited to say also, forget gauges except oil pressure. If you can find the time to look at a gauge on a hill you should be going quicker. By all means fit them if you need to diagnose something...and they're heavy

Graham,
Can you see the bottom of the A pillar where it meets the dash? or is that obscured by the cage?
I have a nice 52mm pod that fits there. I hold it down witha dab of black PU
I used to use an Autometer gauge (from Scoobymania)

All suggestions are welcome, especially one to make me go faster...
I'm trying to keep the car returnable to standard IYKWIM so big strip-outs isn't an option. I will go there when it is time for the 2.5/6 speeder/slicks.
The front legs of the cage obscure all the usual A pillar locations.
The only reason I am thinking of a permanent boost gauge is to check regularly that the boost is held across the rev range. I am too scared to look anywhere but the front screen while on a hill climb, even ignore the tacho, but it can be 'observed' on the road while driving to the events.
The screen demist is important and so is the driver cooling, as a crash helmet in peak summer waiting to take the run of your life to try to beat the EVO's raises the temperature somewhat....
What i realy need is a Stack cluster to log/hold the parameters over the run for play back. The Commander only records peak boost, not where. That is right?

The Defi Control Unit II can record up to 3 minutes IIRC (really must RTM ). I suppose if you got a Defi Tacho you could watch your run up the hill once you've finished it.

AVC-R it is then
and i must get round to fitting my lambdalink at some point if i can get it working can i sacrifice an air vent?

I hope you went near there today ******. Got your email, i'm on MSN with Photoshop open.
Thanks to another thoughtful SNetter the plans (not sure who drew them but thanks ) for a filter shield landed in my Inbox the other night, cheers Ken. So i printed them out and gave them to Dad to take to work with him...
Aircraft grade aluminium. Might not even bother with the APS.

That looks just like my heatshield! Did the plans include cutouts for hybrid FMIC pipework?
I hope you saw the copyright notice and shareware license

I'm gonna make one with a lid however pretty soon. Bonnet clearence is an issue though with the RCM K&N style filter.
