I have too, on my 96 Legacy GTB But usually it's more like 23mpg.

My cornering lights don't work - I suspect the control module's been removed, but as I've yet to see a wiring diagram that matches up with my car, I can't be sure. So I'm deciding whether to make my own control module (couple of 555 timers and relays) or fit driving lights in there instead.

Also, I've not had any problems running on 97RON BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax. Although chucking in a bottle of octane boost (Millers) does make a noticeable difference to the performance.

I always put in the octane boost at the drag strip Managed fairly consistent 15.2 quarter miles, although my starts could be better.

Hi Rich,

30mpg is over 200miles, like a nice trip to the Lakes
Otherwise it's about the the same.

O/B seems to make things smoother, plus the feeling of eagerness.
A knocklink would probably show the real story between 97ron, and 97ron+ O/B.
I suppose some of it will depend how hard you drive, i.e. winding up no. 2 on a frequent basis.

The cornering lights could be done with 3 relays.

I have managed 30mpg out of mine, running BP Ultimate and Millers, a run from Bradford to Glasgow, a couple of days of very short commutes, then home, eventually filling up at Hilton Park services. Something like 336 miles for 52 litres.

How big is the Legacy tank anyway.

I need to get a knocklink I think. Or will one of those Ecutek devices that reads the diagnostics port do the job instead?

Lum,

Knocklink, detects the onset of det only.

Whereas the SECS Monitor plugs directly into the OBD port.
Relays all the info the ECU sees, but desn't show if the engine is detting, just the knock correction value.

I think the tank size is 60ltrs.

HTH

Does SECS work with the BG5B/C engines? I'd be interested if it does. I do tend to accelerate quite hard once it's properly up to temperature, taking it to 6500rpm before changing up, then cruising at 2500-3000 once I'm at my target speed. Also I do take it to the drag strip occasionally, and race it.

Yep, tank size is 60 litres. Although you get the warning light when you get down to the last 10 or so - hence you've probably got another 50 miles or so before it runs out

Any hints on the cornering lights would be appreciated. I couldn't find a signal that went high when indicating, apart from the pulsing one at the hazard switch. Hence I reckoned on needing a couple of 555 monostable timers to get a steady supply so the lights don't flash)

Rich,

Not sure if they do SECS for BG's, phone call job.
If the BG ECU talks the same way, don't see no reason why not.

All I've got is a boost guage, 12/16psi respectivley

50 miles or so before it runs out
Only at a constant 56mph

Should of looked at the wiring diagram, before suggesting 3 relays.
Back to the drawing board on that one.

I think there's 2 different control modules, for with or without corner lamps
As you said there's no permanent high signal.
Though I've a mention of a cornering light relay, confusing or what

PSI3 do a Select Monitor based unit for pre-98 cars, but it's pricy. Might build my own

Yeah - the wiring diagram doesn't match up with the loom in my 96 BG5B car. I have no light at all from the cornering lights at present, so I presume the control module is missing. And I don't have a clue which plug it should be on as there's so many plugs floating about under the steering column. However, I reckon I can add it on by running my own wiring to the lights, and taking the indicator signals from the back of the hazard switch.

Or say 'sod it' and fit a couple of small driving lights in there instead, wired to main beam

Another thought has occured to me with regards the gearing, what is the final drive ratio on a JDM legacy? Is it 3.9 or 4.4? If it's the lower then can I put UK Impreza or Legacy differentials on to get the gears more useful. Do I have to replace the centre diff or both the end ones, or all 3?

Killed my 99 GT-B recently, con-rod through through the block shortly after 7000revs in fifth for a minute or so, anyway the upshot is that I fitted a 02 WRX engine and box and diff from a UK car so that the engine revs at 3100 @ 80mph instead of 3700 @ 80mph, and 3rd can stretch into three figures

Hmm, 7000rpm in 5th - so that's somewhere around 155mph? Heh

On my 96 GTB, I just touch about 99mph in 3rd before the rev limiter comes in. Of course, the power's dropping off by then, so changing up at around 70mph is more sensible.

But yeah - the Legacy has different diff ratios to the Impreza, because it's a longer, heavier car.

If you've got a manual, a possible way of of doing it, is to use the UK 5th gear.
Works on the JDM Impreza.

Though would have to know your final drive ratios, compare them to the Impreza, then do the math bit

My one's a 4 speed Auto.
Are the final drives different on the UK autos, and possibly better for what I need?

Lum,

Got no idea of the ratios.
Maybe worth taking the info off the vin plate, popping down a dealer and see if they can come up with anything.

Alternatively post on here:

Someone may know.
