Richard: thanks for the comments. It is very distressing to need so much amplifier power to get a decent increase in volume isn't it?

ScoobyDoo555: The wife called me up tonight and said, "Guess what I'm holding right now?" (oo, er) :O

Chiark: "Back to the sound relevance, I'd try not to run your rears in parallel at 2ohm, as it will increase the distortion and possibly drag the soundstage back. How about an l-pad to balance the signals?"
?: WTF is an l-pad? I was thinking there might be an increase in distortion only if the amp was the limiting factor. At the mo I am more suspicious of the speakers. I see and interesting experiment coming on with a Scoobynutter holding his wife's Fiesta parcel shelf with Pioneer 6x9s in it connected 2 ohm with my Kennys to see what happens. I know one answer - my wife will call me very sad! BTW, nice to hear about your Amy exploits.

So the plan for my system is the mad Fiesta parcel shelf thing experiment, and then decide on either a pair of 6x9 or new components for the front and put the Kenwoods in the back, or .... (I'm getting carried away now and was going to talk about Rockford and similar amps and all kinds of expensive and sinful things that the wife would **not** like).

John

Do you really need 6x9's in the back shelf? Sounds like this may distract from the front end a little. I do have a set of infinity kappa 6x9's if your interested however (not a plug, but they are doing nothing)

I can tell that you are heading for the slippery slope of buying silly priced amps. I did have a look at

Question

Well, surprise. It actually sounds bloody good to me when the Fiesta parcel shelf sits vertically against the interior rear seat opening (with the seats down) with the grilles pointing towards the front of the car - a funny simulation if ever I saw one. I wired the £32 Pioneer 6x9s in parallel with the fronts as planned. It is much louder and I just did not dare approach distortion levels with it on the drive (would have reached them previously). Funnily enough I quite liked the sound of a bit more from the rear of the car (it's more surround like). The mid bass came alive and the amp seemed to love the experience (still running cool). So I guess the limit must've been those front Kenwoods. I have to say I prefer it with the 6x9s, certainly SPL wise and the treble seemed to be more at ear level. I might put a resistor in series (perhaps 2ohm?) to drop the rear level a bit. I presume this is the "pad" that Chiark was talking about? I could try and disconnect the tweeters also. Looking in Maplin catalogue, I can't find any separate audio grade coils for sale, and the "Car Stereo Cookbook" does not have equations for working out LPF coil inductances.

Any one know the equation? Anyone know where to get an audio grade coil?

ScoobyDoc - the Kappa 6x9s sound a bit posh and the sensitivity is prolly a bit low for my relatively weedy amp (if I end up with a RF et al it may be different). All I need is a little bit of midbass and the thought of molesting some sacred Kappas to disconnect their tweeters would be punishable by at least ten years in Carstairs! Thanks anyway.

And I'm also tempted by some Infinity Reference Comps for the front. Jon from
