As some have already said on this thread (and numerous previous threads on the same topic) - they do...

They have different insurance companies (which they own) to insure the cars, My car is insured for business use as standard the missus had my old subaru and that wasn't. They added a second car to her policy no problem whereas they wouldn't to my policy.

Just got my renewal from L&V-down by £200 from last year, I asked them about my mods. They said they had no record of any mods, so I told them, chip, zort, air filter. They said "no problem" and added them to the note covering the car.

Seems they are operating a 2 tier system.

Default waffle from me

Very good thread and worthy of interest by all legit owners,
IMHO they (the insurance companies) aren't worried by the value of the car- it's the PI accidents that may result (personal injury) these could run into millions of pounds for one griefy accident.
As long as you are honest when you get insurance they will cover you in such a result, they are obliged to. Any such claim and they will put their best people onto it and if they discover any dishonesty (mods not notified, previous claims not mentioned) they will still probably (only my opinion not fact) pay out to the injured party but you will never get insured again and probably be facing some sort of legal action.
My company (not L and V) charged me £598 comp for my imported GTB (standard apart from brake and exhaust mods) which I think is a bargain. I saw another twin turbo estate recently and he said he was only paying £300 comp but his car came back as a standard non turbo'd saloon on hpi when it was an estate??? I am sure his company were covering him on what DVLA said his car was and not what it actually was. In such circumstances not declaring 100bhp plus I think any claim would be void although again under the complicated no insurance accident- his company would probably pay out.
At least you're all trying to get insured which is more than a hell of a lot of other muppets out there,
cheers and good luck to you all,
Dave T

Despite asking different members of staff on several seperate occassions, I still don't have a policy with mods listed. Don't know what I've got to do/say to acquire this, and am uncomfortable with the situation, tbh, given that, in my experience, if people can **** you over, they will.

Any other useful insurers that I can try??

Just called Lloyds and you can have up to 6 mods - they are getting a new system in on Nov 8. Was advised to call back then as it will be cheaper than what they could quote today!

Will post further....

hot off the press.

I am looking to change insurers (with axa, great price , no mods whatsoever thankyou sir, goodbye) and spoke to l@v regarding my std MY95 turbo as been a lot of talk about them on this thread . Got a quote off their website , then phoned them - " as long as you don't change the engine and keep a receipt for all your mods we will cover you" . I plan on replacing my aging backbox for a stainless item and figure it's worth paying another £80 a year insurance over axa to fit a stainless box that cost me £75 second hand, plus the future mods I can now insure... Hope this was a worthwhile addition to the thread.

I think this is one thing they will all agree on, no under 30's on Sti's, tried to insure the wife on mine but couldn't until she was 30, 29 days away! but there was no increase in premium. Have also been told that i can mod as long as i don't increase the CC.

I think my policy underwriting decision was previous, as I checked yet again today that the cc increase I did last year was fine. Interestingly an M5 is only £200-250 extra a year premium, not that I'm getting too many ideas

Ok another official line from LV.I called them today.
All policies are valid at the moment... the managers and underwriters know of this site and the amount of vehicles involved.
They are holding meetings to decide what the standpoint is on modifications.
The woman I spoke to mentioned posting on here with a view to policy holders contacting them.
She is calling me back(dont know when) with a definative answer.

I can just imagine the meeting at L&V when they count up the number of imprezas they've got on the books with some form of modification, it must be quite a bit of monies worth I would have thought.

Aye, but probably not enough to cover a fatality claim (usually six figures or higher) or a serious disability.

Not wanting to put a downer on things - insurance underwriter by trade! Thing is, cars are so cheap to repair - even tasty Porsches and Beemers relatively speaking its peanuts for repairs. People though, they cost serious amounts, even in Britain where payments for drivers/passengers suffering permanent disabilites or (god forbid) death is nothing like that of the States.

You wouldn't too many half million quid claims on your account if you wanted to stay profitable... that's why most companies insure only Mr Joe Middle-England with his 2.0 L Mondeo's.

If it was your money, would you insure us?

;-)

Just taken out a policy with L&V over the phone.

I tried to give them details of my mods (Blitz exhaust, STI panel filter, SECS monitor) but they weren't interested in them at all. They wouldn't even list them, as the girl said to me "we don't ask so you don't need to tell us".

They also weren't interested in my speeding points "we don't penalise our customers for speeding", but i got the impression they'd be interested if it was a ban.

For a 2000 Impreza P1. 30yrs old with 5yrs protected no claims, fully comp, garaged in Swindon.

Renewal with Direct Line was supposed to be £1200 ish.
Footman James quoted £1294.65 with mods and points listed.
L&V quoted £733.78

I nearly had her arm off!

I even got her to re-confirm what she'd said about the mods and points, same thing "we're not interested and don't list them now".

I'm a happy bunny, i feel a re-map coming on!

That's some good quotes there, I'm a little surprised at my renewal of £675. MY00, 43, good post code, alarmed garage, barrier deadlock, 27 years without an accident.

Might have to get me a P1

Can we get onto LV and their track day cover as well?

Had a previous policy with them which I understood and was reiterated a number of times that any mods were fine as long as I had photographic proof but track day cover was categorically NOT included (despite the protestations of some on SN).

Anyway I had to cancel the policy a number of months ago but took out a new policy at the weekend. No probs as I was a previous customer and insuring same car, but this time track day cover WAS included.

Despite what has been posted on this thread (thanks guys!) I will phoning LV tomorrow to see what I can get in writing!

Yeah, Joolz, the climate control and fold in mirrors are kool, my 310 bhp/30 lbft are nice ( after modding) since my beast is now rather <cough> modded, but am over 30 something, do lowish mileage in a low risk job, car can be garaged and is always parked off road ( in non risky area ), no convictions or claims for many many years ( over 10, forget just when ) ...and STILL over £900 when others on here are saying they got £200 off on renewal.!

Time to phone tomorrow, any one special to ask for?

It's now the mods that spoil it for me going elsewhere as others insurance co.s are not so enlightened.

PS I miss out on the so called Bright Switch though!
