Sorry to hear that Hope the meds do the trick.

Maybe if you're within reasonable driving distance from our first stop in France you could pop over to meet us?
Take it easy, eh!

Sorry to hear that Frenchie - hope you make a full recovery soon

As for the weather - I have been reliably informed that a good few of the passes have been closed due to bad weather (thunderstorms), so hopefully it will all have gone by the time we go away.

Impressed with the route-book - very professional.

I think that those with sat-nav systems need to get busy

Gravel rally stage on day 2 anyone???

Cheers

Terry

Normally I would be well up for a gravel road, but MissyC is insisting that the car is spotless and waxed until it sparkles so I think not on this occasion

I'm putting the route into Autoroute in daily segments, and identifying favourable fueling stops etc. already got the Shell sorted for day 1

TomTom & Memory Map waypoints to follow

Hey!! Who says I'm not up for a bit of off-roading Mister

Your motor will G L E A M when I've done with it next weekend.

But I'll have a collapsible bucket and a bottle of car detailing spray in my bag at all times for our trip - wherever the route takes us LOL

Got a cargo net and collapsible crate for the boot, slowly filling it up:- toolkit, warning triangle, home made first aid kit and bulb kit, maps, tyre weld, camera batteries, 2 way radio set(on offer at Maplins-£29.99 instead of £50), new set of Mintex 1155 pads for the AP 6 pots, in car video camera mount etc etc.

Tuesday 6th September can't come soon enough

Default Weather update

Current position is not too good - all of the major passes that are in the routebook in central Switzerland are currently closed. The worst affected area appears to be around Interlaken. However, the prognosis is that all roads will be open this weekend. Stelvio is currently open.

The Austrian authorities seem the best prepared of the bunch, although the Swiss are busy constructing emergency roads and they expect all roads to be accessible as normal by the weekend. Couldn't see that happening in the UK!
The position in Germany is unclear, but we are working on it. Our expectation is that our proposed route will be unaffected.

I will update you as often as I can with as much information as we can get our hands on.

regards,
Nick

Question

Cheers Nick

I've looked at the route in some detail, and it all looks very good

One option I am still considering is to get a 'Vignette' for the motorways in Switzerland for a number of reasons:
  1. If we are not careful we could end up on the Autoroute by mistake
  2. It might give us an alternative route in case of trouble (like this weeks floods)
  3. Some less fun or repeated legs, e.g. back from Chur on day 3 would be a lot quicker (day 3 is long enough anyway)
  4. We can avoid some town centres more easily
  5. There are some nice tunnels to appreciate the flat four burble

What does everyone else reckon?

The Bern/Interlaken etc areas have certainly suffered from the torrential downpours!

Current situation on lower ground - Real player news report

Forecast for Interlaken next week tho is sunny with some showers later, which should help the water to recede.

I think you are right - it gives you more flexibility when you want it. Personally, I would get the vignette.

Road closures and traffic info in Suisse here

Most passes open atm but still probs on the lower roads from the adverse weather.

Charlie's got our road book, so will check against this page with him next weekend.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

CW42 Hope you had a lovely hol in Spain with Joh and the kids. Will catch you on MSN.

Hoping to meet up with you guys all being well.

Keith, I'm having a bit of bother getting the early back issues of Sub magazine but will keep trying. Now that the holiday period is over hopefully they will pick up the phone and we'll get a result!

I'm off down to MRK's in essex on the monday, where are you staying overnight on monday? A convoy down would be fine.
Had a quick look at the tour book when I got in this morning at 5am, very professional and very detailed, I just hope the weather doesn't get the better of us.
Got some major organising to do this week
chris.
