hi Blubs,

Chevette HS was a pucka forest rally car, when i first bought it it was a 2.3 twin cam but i replaced the engine as it was so damn unreliable with a 2litre Pinto (a very special Holbay F3 spec one with billet roller cams, titanium valves and followers etc. Reved the nads off it )

It was five linked at the rear with coilovers, big AP brakes etc. Fabulous fun car, miles better traction than a MKII escort.

Had to sell that to fund my career change, a sad day. But i sold it to a mad irishman who put a 300BHP N/A cossie lump in it and came second overall in the Irish Rallycross championship against GroupB metro's and the like.

He then rolled it into a ball on the donegal rally, so it is no more.

Notice you had an i200, i was the Opel Manta Owners club motorsport champion in 95 i think the year was, did something like 28 races/rallies/sprints.

My list of cars....

C reg Escort 1.1 (Ex police car bought at auction horrible maroon colour with lots of dents and rusty bits)

G reg Peugeot 205 XS (My first decent car and I loved it. 1 owner FSH etc. Got a 3300 loan to buy it and wrote it off after 2 months with only 3rd party fire and theft insurance (During the silly insurance period where i could have bought a 1.9GTi for less than it cost for the XS). Spent the rest of the year paying off the loan very depressing time!!)

D reg Fiat Uno Turbo (Better than you would think, lots of fun, cheap insurance, excellent engine although the rest of the car disintegrated around you. Well thrashed but still easily managed 100,000 miles!!! (Also most police attention in this))

F reg Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 (Biggest disapointment, never ran properly most unreliable car I owned although handled superbly. Shock after how good the 205XS was (although that was much better looked after))

L reg Rover 220 Coupe (Reliable and reasonably quick although never happy with the dodgy build quality and the fact that I found out if had had a new front wing at some point)

W reg Impreza Turbo (First new car and I am never going to buy a second hand car again, lots of power though I thought it would feel quicker)

Starting with the first in 1977
1. Mini 850, wide wheels, wood dash, nasty spoiler, good fun though.
2. 1600XL MK3 Cortina, worst car I've owned a complete dog.
3. 2000E MK3 Cortina, much better than the 1600, but that's all.
4. Rover 3500S P6, ah.... now this brings back memories, throbbing V8, manual g/box, quite rare in it's day, why did I sell it
5. 1600 MK2 Cortina, can't remember why I bought this one, must have had a good reason at the time.
6. 2.3 Ghia MK4 Cortina, engine smooth and quite but gutless the 2000E was quicker.
7. Golf GTI 1600, were into the early 80's now, most modified car I've owned.
8. Volvo 343GL, family arriving needed something cheaper.
9. Carlton 2000, family getting bigger.
10.Orion 1600 Ghia, nice car until it started to go rusty.
11.Saphire 2.0GLS, hit a pot hole in this one and creased the inner wing !!
12.Volvo 460, best car ever, no only joking.
13.Cavalier V6, fantastic engine in an otherwise ordinary car, lots of go in a straight line.
14.Vectra 1800, much better than you might think

Currently owned
15. Mazda MX5, much much fun, if only it had more power.
16. MY00 Scoob, ooh suit you sir.

Top 5
1. Scoob
2. MX5
3. Golf GTI
4. Cav V6
5. Rover 3500S

first car was:-
85 peugeot 205 1.4 gr
92 renault 19 1.4 rn (new)
ok its a renault, no probs with it though
93 renault 19 16v (new)
good car, shame about the rattle from new
96 peugeot 306 gti-6 (ex demo, nice for the first 2 hours until some ar**hole drove through a red light! nice airbag though)
89 peugeot 309 gti (shed, second car)
cost me an arm and a leg to keep on the road, reliability pretty good but rear beams wear, not cheap for another (250quid)
97 peugeot 306 gti-6 (ex demo, no crashes!!)
If you ever want a second car, this is it, its better in town than the scoob, pushing 147bhp at the wheels (175bhp at flywheel) and it was standard!!! handling was brill, driven old 205 gti, sorry this a lot better!!
89 renault 19 1.7 gtx (second car)
rattles etc, but reliable as anything, just shame it was a slug!!!
00 subaru impreza turbo.... hmmmmm the dogs!!!!!
really impressed with the handling, aint really ragged it yet but run on the good stuff from new (sul) no jerkiness etc.

John,

Forest rallies in rear wheel drive cars........hmmmmmm. I also had a pinto engine in my Chevette. Isn't the fitting of the exhaust manifold the most miserable experience known to man!!!

Golf Mk2 1.3 - great first car
Golf Mk2 1.6 Driver - Aint no stopping me now !
Golf Mk2 1.8 GTi16v - Great 140bhp performance - great mpg - great reliability - pound for pound probably the best car I have owned
Escort Cossie - company car - felt quick at the time but feels slow compared to my current STi
Probe 24v V6 - WHY ??? - Great engine but everything else was poo - sold it after 3 months
Scooby Turbo 95MY - Fantastic - loads of mods
Scooby Turbo 98MY Prodrive - Fantastic again - but missed the "big Turbo" fun of the last one
Scooby WRX STiV4 Even more fantastic !

Driven but not owned :

EVO 5 - Test drove one back to back with my STi4 - & chose the STi
Ferrari 360 Modena - Dad looking to buy one & the Ferrari garage let me take it for a spin (to stop me dribbling all over the showroom floor) FANTASTIC - I now understand how a car can be worth £100k
Porsche Boxter - felt slow - more a pose than a drive.

What next ? Possibly EVO 6/7

Below is the collection of cars that I have owned with some of the company cars my wife has had that I've driven a lot.

83 Mk1 Golf GTI - good, but got nicked
82 2CV - bad, but didn't get nicked
84 Mk1 Golf GTI (uprated everything) - brilliant - had a garage by now
87 Corolla GTI 16v - underated hot hatch, but not as good as Mk1 Golf GTI
82 Escort Mk II 1600 - one of the last Mk2's ever built - I loved this car.
89 Corolla GTI 16v - see above
85 Polo - boring, but reliable 2nd car
93 Astra 1.4L - Yuck - officially the second most unreliable car on earth
95 Rover 220 Coupe - officailly the most unreliable car on earth
97 Scooby 5 dr - Wow
99 Scooby 4 dr - Wow again
00 Scooby 4 dr - Wow again again
00 Lotus Elise - Wonderful

I can't really choose my favourite as I have owned them over many different periods of my life and the memories are sometimes muddled with other circumstances. Plus everything seemed so much more exciting when I was younger... I'll shut up now before this gets too deep.

Regards,

tiggers

89 Cavalier 1.6
92 Cavalier SRi
90 Supra Turbo auto
95 Cavalier 16v CDX
90 Supra Turbo manual
98 Honda Accord
95 Supra Twin Turbo
90 Nissan 200sx

which makes it look like I jump around cars a bit, but I had the Cav16v with the Supra Turbo manual as a weekend car, then I got the Honda Accord, my wife had the Cav and I still used the Supra turbo manual as a weekend car, then I ditched the Accord and used the Supra turbo as the main car, then I got the Supra TT and used that as the day to day car, with my wife STILL using the Cav, and the Supra turbo as a weekend car. I just sold the supra turbo, I use the Supra TT as a weekend car, my wife still uses the Cav and I just bought a Nissan 200sx as a runabout.

My insurance bill is a nightmare, but its suprising how quickly you can rack up a full no-claims by moving insurance company and seeing what the new one will accept.

In order of enjoyment
1. Supra TT
2. Supra turbo manual
3. Supra turbo auto

This is the question that shows the impact of family all too well, but here goes:

Ford Orion 1.6i ghia (company car)
Ford Fiesta XR2
Nisan 200 SX
BMW 318 touring - the first of the kids arrived
Volvo 850 - the next of the kids arrived
Scooby MY99
plus a Forester S-turbo for the family

Which was most fun - well they were all great in their way, I probably burnt most rubber in the XR2 and spent most time sideways in the 200SX, but guess what, its the Scooby that get's the vote.

The Forester is a bit of a star as well if you like a bit more drift, anyone else out there tried one?

Yeesh! How old are all you guys?

My list:

1997 Got 'N'-reg Rover 214SEi
1999 Got 'V'-reg UK Scoob new

Steeper curve than most... so what to get in 2001 then? As I doubled the power last time, I need around 450bhp next time... perhaps an ex-Felstead car?
