Recent new owner view:

Yep, it costs more to run. However I enjoy this car like no other. How much more - haven't really counted but insurance about £200 a year more, fuel about....oh hell get one - you'll soon realise that all that doesn't matter. what price fun & grins?

Yes, I was assuming that any Subaru dealer worth his salt would do the geometry.

Also, if buying a backbox choose carefully as the WR Sport from Subaru is not the best or cheapest available by a good bit.

BUY THE CAR then!

John, bear in mind that these boards are not great for reporting good news only bad (go news is not very newsworthy is it!)... so here is my contribution;

I have had my WRX for 2 months now i am pleased to say that I have experienced the following so far:

Good service and friendly advice from my local Subaru dealer.
Good service from my local 'specialist' suppliers.
Nothing has fallen off, broken or stated to rattle.
My insurance was really pretty reasonable.
No one has tried to steal or vandalise my scoob.
I get MPG on par with the Volvo and Beemer i drove before.
Nobody has cut me up, flicked the vees at me!

Go for it!!

Mine costs less to service at the dealers than my Audi did. The only scary thing about that was the service bills!

I found the standard WRX more than enough performance wise to start with but i guess in depends on what car your coming from.

Default go for it

As a relative high mileage (i.e wrx o3 i year old 21000 miles) user i thought i would add some comments.

The sccob has been 100% reliable, servicing costs £350 less over that mileage than a vauxhall vectra gsi i had before as a company car. The dealers (Ashburton Motor Co, Ashburton, Devon ) fantastic (no i dont work there)!!!

Insce of £550 is realistic and ok for the car!

The standard wrx is a bloody stonking car i have loved mine every day i have had it, just be warned one day you will want the ppp and then the sti and then the sti ppp. But hey what fun! Go for it mate and enjoy!!!

This may be just a little premature, but you'll thank me for it later.

The 2nd Sunday in each month is the Surrey Meet. Starts off just around the corner from Bell & Colville at Newlands Corner. Stick it in your diary, and we'll see you down there.

As for the ownership experience, I have to say that it's been better than I ever thought possible. As you already know, the car drives great. Running costs are more than your average car, but these are far from being average cars. I, too, have had 20k from a set of tyres, so not as unusual as some would suggest. I've met some great people through owning a scoob, and this you don't get with most other cars.

You only live once.

Let us know how you get on. I'm in the same boat as yourself - the wife is (just) about convinced and I've now decided for definite that my Mini Cooper S has to go (too small when we've got a second kid on the way, and attracts much too much ned/chav attention - been keyed, badges ripped and only recently, rear spoiler ripped off in broad daylight!).

:-(

I've only tried one WRX (a demonstrator from my local garage about 9 months ago) and although it didn't feel jaw-droppingly quick I was very impressed with the ride, poise, handling, grip, steering feel, brakes and general overall supreme confidence it gave out! I had toyed with the idea of going down the car-supermarket route but I think I've binned that one - too many hassles. Just need to find a good main dealer who's keen to do a deal!

Best insurance quote I can get is around the £600 mark and I'm 33 with full bonus. Not too bad? I only do about 8-9,000 miles a year (and had a '97 Nissan 200SX a few years back - which got around 19 mpg) so I'm not 'too' worried about horrendous fuel economy. Tyre prices will probably be cheaper than the extortionate run-flats I've got to get at the S at the moment (£165 from a main dealer or £125 after much shopping around).

My cousin is probably counting the days 'till September the 1st - when his Civic Type R gets punted for a WR Blue WRX too... The only thing that's bothering me, wait for the 05 Model Year and get a nicer interior and back box sacrificing 'free' servicing???

Decisions...

John

Well that's what I thought, but after a few months I wish i'd of bought the STi PPP, I was thinking it was my first scooby and i'm only 24, thought it'd be plenty fast. Now i'm thinking of getting an STi PPP, the standard wrx feels slow.

I've never had any problems and I park it pretty much anywhere, the only vandalism I had was the grille badge going walkies, i managed to replace it with a dark blue one that suits my car better for £7, so it weren't all bad.

Maybe it's just the classics that get the attention and they leave the new ages alone?

As has already been pointed out you are going to see the negative side of theft etc - "Help my scoobys been nicked" - worrying for us all, but this is a national board and the occurance is still pretty low, if everybody posted in the morning to say "my scooby is fine and wasn't nicked last night" I think you'd feel a lot happier

I was worried about the theft aspect, I have no garage and is on a non-gated driveway, but with decent alarm etc and a disclok (best £70 you can ever spend, what a deterrent) I sleep fine at night and touch wood it's never had a touch. I live about 25 miles away from Brum so not exactly safest area but it is quite rural.

I moved from a Ford Focus to my Turbo, and yes the MPG is bad but apart from that I find the insurance, servicing and even tyres very reasonable

Go for one, my brother-in-law was so impresed with mine he's gone and got a new one himself You won't regret it!!!

Black. It was a choice of black or blue, but the black is in stock which means I should get it quicker (Never get red, always had a problem with fade on red cars)

Default So where to buy from ?

I am in the same place as John, nearly ready to buy a new WRX, but where to go ?

...Litchfield imports MY05 £16995, versus dealers MY04 200 mile demonstrator for £18990 (with 3 years servicing). The Litchfield car still has the 3 year warranty.

It has to be the Litchfield car, other than getting a lower resale (but look what you save in the first place) whats the downside ?

MODIFICATIONS = THOOOOOOSANDS!!!!

The same, pretty much as my wife's Yaris costs (aside from the mods)

Insurance is more expensive, slightly increased theft risk (but not that much) and a bit less economical but it will do 30 MPG every day if you drive it properly.

Oh yeah - and - IT'S FECKIN GREAT!!! Especially when you do a few things to it (Prodrive spring kit, drop links, exhaust etc etc).

Expect it to be less economical than a 1.2 Corsa but not any worse than any other non performance car I have had. And it is driven hard often BUT not always and that is the difference. The pads need done now, which are a bit pricey but get good ones (not the Subaru ones) and get great brakes for the same cost. Tyres are still good after track events and 17,000 miles - the fronts will see 20,000 and the backs 30,000.

I may add, before I am accused of driving like Miss Daisy, the car does get "driven" but I am also capable of reigning in my right foot and driving with mechanical sympathy and economically.

Go ahead and buy it - you will enjoy it - just don't read too much into opinionsm, especially about car jacking etc or NO ONE would own an Impreza - new shape cars are cheaper to run, I believe, than classics.

Brian
30mpg if you drive it properley, yeah right leave it home and take the Yaris!

Nice colour choice

I'd stick with the standard WRX at least for a while, let things settle down. In 12 months if you are getting used to the power, you can always consider PPP at the first service.

Talkin' about me again mate?

I just negotiated the backbox (sports muffler) into the deal. It's only a couple of hundred quid to the dealer anyway. Not to forget mats. So my final spec, WR Blue WRX, Sports backbox, SmartNav (RAC Trackstar Plus Tracker, Sat Nave, Speed Safe) and parking sensors. I'm happy to sacrifice the "enhanced" door cards and center console (which looks a bit plastic anyway) for the current steering wheel, and 3 yrs servicing (4 services... 1000, 10000, 20000, 30000). And I get it in exactly 1 wks time. Infact I'll be sitting in the dealers this time next week.

I've only owned my impreza wrx for 5 days and I love it. Econimy isn't too bad provided you dont boot it everywhere you go. I filled up the tank on Sun and have used slightly over a quarter of a tank and have done 120miles.

Insurance well depending on your age then you'll be paying around a grand if your young like me .

Sevicing well I'm not totally clued up on this but I believe it works in three stages (based on a 2002 wrx). Each service stage is every year or 10k miles whichever first. Think it starts at about £200 and goes up a hundred quid each stage, with a major service (cam belt change) at 60k miles.

Performance well a 4wd car with a sub 6 sec 0-60 as standard for decent money. In my biased opinion...buy one!

Hope that helps

Iain

Do it mate! I've just bought a 99my classic and I can honestly say that it's plenty fast enough! In fact, you'll be able to leave pretty much anything behind at will. The challenge is learning to control yourself, otherwise you'll get points on your licence faster than you can say: "Scooby Doo!"

Slightly higher running costs and poorer fuel economy are par for the course for a performance car, but these are offset by a well maintained Scooby's reputation for reliability! Also the car won't ask you to make any concessions to practicality: 4 doors, big boot, cinch to drive slowly around town etc...

Just got myself a decent Disclock, only cost 49 quid from Halfords and provides a very visible deterrent to supplement the non-vsible alarm and immobiliser to any would be thieves. Go for one that is Thatcham approved to Cat 3 and bears the sold secure branding.

All the best.

i'm sure they dont just target scoobies. its just that this is a scooby board, so its that kind of thing that catches the eye. i dont know how many cars are nicked every week in the UK, but I'd bet that only a fraction of a percent are scoobies.

Yeah, but the first quater of a tank (on the guage), takes ages and after that it just flies, you'll probably get 250 miles from a tank, like i do.

It does seem to go into freefall after passing the "half full" mark

10K service - £120

20K service - £180

Now done 22K miles and there still life in the tyres. My old 00MY Turbo never did more than 15K on a set.

Even without free servicing, the cost is less than my Wife's Freelander. She had a Punto before that and that was even more expensive!

Around 20MPG, or less, on a fast country drive. 24-28 on decent A roads and motorways. Even had over 32 on stop start slow motorway trip.

Mines a WRX PPP MY03, by the way. You will need PPP fitted at the first service, oh and the Prodrive springs, PIAA driving lights, boost guage.............

I have had my 03 WRX since new with no problems and it's done 26,000 miles in 18 months! It's as reliable as a swiss watch ....

I drive like a nutter (as a few on here will testify to) and still get 25-30mpg.

It's fitted with an RAC trackstar to do as much as is reasonably possible to boost security, but otherwise it's insured.

Only costs have been one minor and two major services - less than £400 plus a set of 4 tyres (£360) which last most people 20-25K a set.

Tick the boxes for the Prodrive springs and the sports backbox and enjoy! It's been my best all round car ever and I've had a lot of fast cars ....
To boot the wife loves it to bits!

Hmm,

read all the posts and quite a bit of good advice/experiences.

All I can say is I needed a car for work, looked around for interesting car (has to be 4 doors, company rules) found nonthing nice.

Travelling home, pressed nose against window of local Scooby dealer - saw blue WRX wagon, bought it next day!

No regrets at all

Also didn't intend to modify, but sort of fitted STi interior (verrry comfy seats) and look good

One shock - went to fit mud flaps as I live in the sticks - £140 a PAIR!!!

and if all that's not enough, wife liked it so much she went out and bought an Outback (used - we are not that rich).

Do it.....life's too short to hesitate.
