I'll give you a typical example (this occured yesterday on a busy M25).
I was sitting in the inside (i.e. slow) lane behind an old white coach doing about 55mph up a hill.
Behind me was a blue Peugeot 405 with a covered trailer, and he had been sitting behind me about 5 minutes (not tailgating at this point).
When lane 2 was finally clear, I indicated to go out to lane 2 to overtake the coach, and the peugeot followed me. Now, for some bizarre reason, he thought it was a good idea to start tail gating me. He was litterally sitting one foot of my bumper while we overtook the coach and then proceeded to overtake the lorry that was in front of the coach.
I see no reason why he would have started tail gating at that point, except that he probably wanted to intimidate the stupid looking Smart in front. This time I didn't actually dab the brakes, but dropped it down one gear and left him for dead (yes, in a smart) Had there been less traffic, I definitely would have dabbed the brakes.
Another example, I was going from Croydon towards Lewisham, and I was doing about 34-35 in a 30 (so not going slower than anyone else), and this boy racer in his peugeot 206 comes flying right up behind me, again sitting one meter away from the bumper. There was traffic in front of me, so I couldn't exactly go any faster, so instead I slowed down a bit to increase the gap between myself and the car in front (and I took great pleasure in doing so). It's like people look at the Smart and see that it's dinky sized and decide to take liberties (try to cut me up etc) wherever I go. It's gotten so bad that I actually have to drive more agressively in the Smart to get anywhere at all (It's up for sale, can't wait until it's gone (for this very reason, other than that it's a great car!)). Believe me, it's scary when huge ****ers of land rovers etc sit one inch off your bumper and you're in a Smart
When I'm out in the scooby, some people tend to sit right up my bumper as well, but I think this is because they want to see me boot it or something.
It usually happens when driving in town, to be honest, although when it happens on the motorways, it's a lot more scary.

Whereas to me, braking (or your method of activating the brake lights) is just indicating that you have NO intention of moving over, whatever happens. *That* infuriates *me* more than anything!!
But then i don't get close to people unless it's obvious (to me) that they are able to move across safely to let me pass...

It's all down to bloody cameras again. Virtually no traffic police about, about the only thing you will get done for is speeding by a camera, anything else goes.

Can't always move over, and if I'm doing appropriate speed I shouldn't have to.
I hate tailgaters, and bad lane discipline, and anchovies.
I wasn't knocking you about the hand gesture - its a good one however I'd rarely use that, I would tend to use that more if I started to get heated. again - its winds people up soooo good!!
....and it serves them right.

I think we've found common ground. Cameras catch unsuspecting motorists. Bad drivers can get away with anything as long as their bad driving is within what is considered acceptable speeds.
