Here goes.......

I'm on the fast'est' lane of the motorway (that would be the correct, left hand driving lane). There is nothing in front of me as far as the eye can see. Approaching is a vehicle in the middle lane doing lesser speed. I can:

A. Move across 3 lanes to overtake him, moving back to the left lane once complete.
B. Move to lane 2 and tailgate
C. Stay in the lane I am in.

I take option 'C' with a hint of caution. The other evening I did this. Once I was passed the vehicle I was flashed. Baring in mind I was in the left lane and he/she remained in lane 2 (for no apparent reason).

So........here's what I did.

Indicated right, joined the middle lane, then indicated left to re-join the left lane. Did this twice to try and say "you are in the wrong lane my friend". He/she just remained in the middle lane occasionally falshing his/her lights probably saying "look at that **** undertaking". WRONG. I stayed in the left lane and continued with my journey following my failed attempt to point out the error in his ways.

The road was quiet and nothing was anything near me in any lane really....BTW.

Discuss......

I was sitting in the inside (i.e. slow) lane behind an old white coach doing about 55mph up a hill.

Behind me was a blue Peugeot 405 with a covered trailer, and he had been sitting behind me about 5 minutes (not tailgating at this point).

When lane 2 was finally clear, I indicated to go out to lane 2 to overtake the coach, and the peugeot followed me. Now, for some bizarre reason, he thought it was a good idea to start tail gating me. He was litterally sitting one foot of my bumper while we overtook the coach and then proceeded to overtake the lorry that was in front of the coach.

I see no reason why he would have started tail gating at that point, except that he probably wanted to intimidate the stupid looking Smart in front. This time I didn't actually dab the brakes, but dropped it down one gear and left him for dead (yes, in a smart ) Had there been less traffic, I definitely would have dabbed the brakes.

Another example, I was going from Croydon towards Lewisham, and I was doing about 34-35 in a 30 (so not going slower than anyone else), and this boy racer in his peugeot 206 comes flying right up behind me, again sitting one meter away from the bumper. There was traffic in front of me, so I couldn't exactly go any faster, so instead I slowed down a bit to increase the gap between myself and the car in front (and I took great pleasure in doing so). I dabbed my brakes too, and guess what? He stopped tail gating! Result!
First may well have been him trying to slip stream you. No excuse, but he probably thought it was OK, you did the right thing, get yourself out of his way, if slowing doesn't get him past, then try accelerating (within reason).

For the second, the guy's a muppet, and you did the right thing by increasing your gap to cater for his stopping distance as well. Still don't condone the brake dabbing.

I slow down and speed up a little within reason before I touch my brakes!!

Initially I term it "driving too close" if they persist it then becomes tailgaiting.

I don't make the brake lights come on straight away man!!

It's like people look at the Smart and see that it's dinky sized and decide to take liberties (try to cut me up etc) wherever I go. It's gotten so bad that I actually have to drive more agressively in the Smart to get anywhere at all (It's up for sale, can't wait until it's gone (for this very reason, other than that it's a great car!)). Believe me, it's scary when huge ****ers of land rovers etc sit one inch off your bumper and you're in a Smart

When I'm out in the scooby, some people tend to sit right up my bumper as well, but I think this is because they want to see me boot it or something.

It usually happens when driving in town, to be honest, although when it happens on the motorways, it's a lot more scary.

I do think the big 4x4 makers have a lot to answer for. Certainly seem to have an increased number of people who feel safe and so worry less and pay less attention as a result.

I regularly undertake on Motorways, 99% of the time I do so leaving a clear lane between me and the wally in the far right lane. Always using caution and making sure the hard shoulder is also clear.

For the middle laners I move from outside lane once i have overtaken them, straight into the inside lane.

Showing my age but what ever happend to the old adverts about lane discipline, keeping left etc etc?? That would be a good idea to re-introduce them.

Middle lane hoggers basically turn 3 lane motorways into 2 lane dual carriageways as everybody goes to the outside lane to overtake. Everyone is kinda "shifts" over one lane to the right.

I definitely think that is the case too, or maybe they're just homophobes trying to rid the world of the "gay" guy in the Smart (I'm not gay btw, happily married )

Also I've found out that in life in general, some people feel the need to bully people if they think they've got the upper hand, and I think this reflects in driving too. If someone with a need to bully people is feeling unsecure sexually maybe they go out and buy a big manly 4x4 and start intimidating other road users for no apparent reason?

My boss and I encountered a smiliar retard to Alas a while ago on the M62 near Halifax. He was tailgating before performing a numpty undertaking manouvre. I was in the passenger seat and raised my hands to clap - Numptyhead slams on breaks, then gets back inside and starts swerving into car. Finally hit the traffic by Hartshead services when by luck we stop side by side. He gets out leaving his two toddlers in the back and goes for the door handles, while questioning our respective parentage and personal habits. On realising he aint getting in he punches the window and off he goes.
Police called to "ongoing roadrage incident" - he is finally knicked at his house a day or two later - turns out he had a bit of previous retardedness on his record - went to court and he pleaded guilty to being a melon - got a three figure fine and a few hours bench painting for his trouble...

Always worth reporting - and getting a reg plate if witness toooo - IMO

Just thought i'd back you up a bit AP.

I've experienced tailgaters fairly often, and most of the time i do as is recommended and leave a decent gap between myself and the car ahead of me. Occasionally i've lapped a roundabout to put the tailgater a couple of cars ahead of me.

Once, a few years ago I was travelling down the A420 from Oxford to Swindon. Dry, bright (but not dazzling) sunshine, almost perfect driving conditions. There was nothing else on the road except me, and a sales rep type in a Vectra/Rover sitting a few feet off my rear bumper. I was doing about 50 (the limit) and after a few miles of tailgating it was pretty clear he wasn't interested in overtaking. It was also clear he was reading a pretty interesting sales report which was propped against the steering wheel.

So he's driving along, reading intently, and glancing up every few seconds to check he was still on the road, then eyes back down to the report. So i wait until his eyes were back down and rest my left foot on the brake lever for a few seconds, just enough to put the lights on and not enough to slow the car at all.

Right on cue Mr Salesman looks back up, sees red lights, eyes are wide like saucers, brakes full on, huge lock up of wheels, loads and loads of smoke, and mucho fishtailing.

I carry on at same speed trying not to be sick with laughter.

Mr salesman recovers composure and resumes his cruise. Only now he's put his sales report away and is about 4 car lengths behind me, concentrating on the road. No flashing of lights, blaring horns, or arm waving. He knows he's just been caught being a tw@t.

I think he saw it as a valuable lesson. Same as I did when the driver of a Porsche 928 did exactly the same thing to me about 12 years ago just after i'd passed my test, i didn't tailgate people after that.

we did report a road rage incident a few weeks back, a green 'e' reg transit just pulled out in front of me hit the brakes hard hit the horn as well to get him to see me and put his foot down because i thought i was going o rear end him and he just stops dead the missus screamed i shut my eyes and waited for the crunch but we stopped with inches to spare. he throws off his seat belt storms up to the car trys the door handle but the alarm locks it when the car is started. then proceeds to batter hell out of the drivers window screaming we damaged his kid! goes back to his van and round to the side door at that point i'm thinking he's coming back with a bat or something but walks back towards us empty handed. the missus starts to phone the police he see's her and walks back to his van and drives off.
we went straight down the police and they are going to charge him with reckless driving and some anti social behavior thing as there isn't actually a law to do with road rage itself.
will keep posted on how things go

Saw someone else tailgate last night. A bloke in a Fiat Marea (like a Brava) tailgaiting a young lady in a Astra.

I overtook them, looked at the tailgaiter, and by using my hands pointed out the distance between him and the car he was up the chuff of. I then shook my head with a "tutting" type expression. True to form it worked a treat, he started getting all angry and aggrevated. Giving me the w&nker sign etc. I smiled, then laughed at him then gave him the finger whilst laughing, he was waiving his fist etc so I just did the "calm down" thing. Superb.

Nothing winds people up more. lol.

Stressy tw&t.
