About the TPS being useless: I have actually noticed a reduction in calls. Even if you do get a call, being registered does give you some leverage when verbally dressing them down. Make sure you are nice as pie at first and get their details..... then give them a torrent of abuse and tell them they are in breach and that you will report them!
A bit like this: http://www.cndl21173.pwp.blueyonder....wnloads/bt.mp3

I registered our new house 2 years ago with the TPS before we actually lived there....
...and am also VERY careful about giving out our home number to companies.
The only cold calls we do get are for the previous owner - have had NONE for us. If I get them for the previous owner, I just curtly say :
"I'm sorry, she's dead".
...and I'm not lying either. At least I usually get a "sorry about that" rather than the usual sweet-as-pie telesales person that has bipolar syndrome and gets all abusive as soon as you tell them you're not interested!
Works every time. I recommend it as a useful & quick fob-off.

Cold called by Indian call centre yesterday about personal loans (my mortgage company). Too much is lost in the culture/language for the person to actually understand what I was on about = waste of my time, incomprehension for girl on phone & no sale for Halifax, when in fact I was possibly interested!!!
I rang Demon last night as I've been having trouble with spam & I wanted to find out a bit more about their recently implemented anti-spam policy. Off to India again where I could not get a simple question answered whereas I know it'd have been answered spot on before they shifted their call centre
Not impressed...

Okay, i've registered with TPS but as yet still waiting for it to kick in
I've been getting on average 1 a night over the last week or so and i have taken to just saying "**** off" to them and putting the phone down
I got one from NTL so i told her to F off
I then got another one just 5 mins ago from an Asian country asking me if i was interested in a Yorkshire County Cricket Club / MBNA credit card. I also told him to F Off and slammd the phone down.
Just a thought, i cant be done for this can i I'd hate to hear some of the recordings in court if i was ever up before the beak

I would say you couldn't be done for anything, but give Blair a week or so and I'm sure the law can be changed so that you'll lose your driving licence for it!
I am pretty abrasive with cold callers too, so I guess I'll see you at the court rooms!
p.s. remember to use a different voice in court!

I am getting a huge number of cold calls as mentioned in this thread but they all come up as 'International'. BT were so helpful....NOT. Nothing they can do coz it is auto diallers that call and then they see if an operator can deal - if not they hang up. It is getting really irritating especially for my wife. Trouble is I get alot of International calls out of hours due to my business - so I cant just ignore the phone.
So what can we do to stop it ? I have registered with the TPS but it made no difference.

Since registering i have noted a distinct drop of calls but as dtriggs says they haven't stopped.
I appreciate that these "overseas" calls may not fall under the TPS remit however i am bemused by the NTL one because the girl was Scottish.
Unless she was a Scottish girl who has moved to India
