Yes, be very careful when buying, especially an Import. There's a V5 STi in cool grey on that famous auction site saying, in clear English, 'ONE owner from new, only 27000 miles, NOT CLOCKED!' But the seller doesn't have full history, (very strange on a 27000 mile, 1 owner car) and it's been registered in Ireland before being registered in the UK! Why put 'NOT CLOCKED' in the ad? Also says 'car has the usual scuffed bumbers'. I didn't realise you version 5 STI drivers all made a habit of scuffing your bumbers!
Hi there. I have just read in Japanese Performance Magazine that only Version III i.e 1996/1997 STI models onwards got the red finish on the manifold etc. If you have a car older than this then it won't have the red finish and there is no reason to assume it is not genuine. Take it to a specialist if you are worried though. If you know your car model number you will easily find out what car and whether it is a non-STI or STI etc...many websites offer this information. There are quite a few variations.
STI's come in 2 door versions (the Type R's and special editions) and also four door versions. The Type RA (lightweight model) comes in WRX and WRX STi form... both very similar except the engine is far stronger in the STI. Again the red finish did not appear on the STI type RA until Version III (from 1996 onwards).
Let us know how you get on.
