Driver fined for eating ice cream

Now you mention motorbikes, it just occured to me that the highway code actually has a section for motorbike hand signals. Who is likely to be more out of contol - a driver with one hand on the wheel, or a biker with one hand on the handlebars?

The "one-handed" law is less to do with using one hand on the steering wheel than not being as alert whilst driving as one should be, whilst enjoying an ice cream.
After all, drivers using hand-controls would therefore be banned from the roads.

I wopuld enture to suggest that this clown probably got stopped for not wearing a seatbelt, trotted out the "Why don't you go catch some real criminals" line and immediately fell foulf of the "And another thing" regulations used to handle arsey motorists.
Dorset landlords? Never met one yet who wasn't a complete butthead.
Of course I may be completely mistaken

I think, for what that's worth, that it might be worthwhile to stop someone who is driving and eating an ice cream and point out to them that it's probably not very safe and would they consider not doing it again. If they seem to take the point on board then well and good, if they get nasty or are too stupid to see the point then I suppose it might be reasonable to resort to a fine.
In saying that there used to be an ice cream shop quite close to our local police station and of a nice Friday or Saturday evening the police used to stake it out, fining every driver who drove off with an ice cream in their hand and then returning to do the next victim. My local area has a clear up rate for robbery of less than 3 percent, most other crime has a similar clear up rate.
So, while I take the view that dangerous actions have to be prevented on the roads I also resent motorists being persecuted by police just because they are usually a law abiding, sensible member of society who is likely to pay the fine.

It is true. My father was a regular visitor to the shop, he would drive there, and on a nice warm evening it was not unusual to have him come home and report that the police had it "staked out" and that he had seen a number of people done for driving off with an ice cream in their hands.
My mother rang the police station in question one evening to report a (real) crime in progress and was told they were too busy to listen to her complaint on the phone but perhaps she could write to them. I can't help but wonder if they were too busy because they were involved in a labour intensive undercover anti-ice cream operation.
