Blown PIAA bulbs

Dave T-S,
I didn,t have the Dipping Oscars you refer to, but had Cibie Z180 (or H180 I can't remember now)headlights with H4 bulbs, and had Wipac Hairaser spots (because I couldn't afford Super Oscars).
The point I was making is the 1972 AVO Mexico, but I don't about the later non Boreham built cars, had a relay that powered the dipped beam on the headlights when full beam was on at the same time. It lit up the road close to the car, where there would normally be a darker area when on full beam, and it was fine on the twisty stuff, but on the faster straights, my eyes couldn't adapt to the light pattern, and it made it seem as though the distance ilumination was lacking, purely an optical illusion, but confidence sapping in my case.
I even tried disconecting the relay to lessen the effect, but then bought the spot lamps, which I think were actually driving beam pattern if I remember correctly (its over 20 years ago)and reconnected the relay,as I don't think Wipac did long range spots but Cibie did in Oscar and Super Oscar format, the Dipping Oscars were not around when I was a lad.
The whole point about about bulbs and light patterns is very subjective, and one person can happily blast along with what may appear to you to be inadequate lights, because they are used to them.
Without doubt the more Wattage you can use the better it has to be, if you are not constrained with legalities.
Given all other parameters being equal, a 100W H1 bulb gives off more light (Lumens) than a 55W H1 bulb.
The H1 bulbs,(Super Oscars) and H2 bulbs (Oscars, i think), H3(Wipac spots), H4 (Cibie headlights).
The H2 was rated to be the best bulb, highest Lumens output.
In the 70's the Cibie Biode, Super Oscar and Oscar equipped Works Escorts would be using 440 Watts (55 Watts x 8), as 100 Watt and above bulbs were not available at that time, but had they been they would most cetainly have used them to their advantage.
Wether the Xenon 30% brighter Halfords and the like bulbs are concerned, which I fitted to my last Impreza, and some of the very costly PIAA bulbs are concerned, really give any benefit, is up to the individual paying for them.
If they feel more confident, then they are worth every penny.
Cheers MTR

I seem to remember I drove much better in the 70's and 80's (or thought I did) - bigger melons and better eyesight!!
Did have a pair of Turini Apollos (228mm)in long range (circa 800m) with 100w bulbs on my last car - 306 GTI-6 - brilliant but a bugger when you dipped them at speed!!
