BUT, I seem to remember your suggestion that driving an Impreza with gold wheels and an STI spoiler indicated I was Chav McChav from Chav Street, Chavingham.

You have to understand it's not just him who thinks this. It's a simple case of economics - the Impreza was a "must have" at one point, to the extent that the UK cars were unavailable unless secondhand, and even then at the same price as the new ones.

Consequently, a load of JDM ones arrived in the UK; as people have moved on to the latest fashion, demand for the Impreza has declined, and as all owners will testify, it's a buyer's market. Hence Burberry Bob can pick up a '95 with massively tacky addenda for £4-5k, pay 3rd party only insurance of £1k and still be better off than buying a 'sensible' car.

It's not just that they're cheap; the principal reason for buying an Impreza is that they were real hero cars about four years ago, and a lot of these lads can just about afford to run one. Thing is, they're £20k cars which currently cost perhaps £5k but have the overall running costs of a £40k car, in terms of fuel, servicing, insurance etc. And since these guys can't (usually) afford to run them well, they're gradually becoming tatty and low-rent, in just the same way as XR3s and Cosworths did about a decade ago. No service history, broken/badly repaired bodywork, you know the sort of thing.

Once the crap is cleared out the model will regain credibility, but for now the image has taken a knock. If that doesn't matter to you, that's great. But most of us have some degree of self-image, and I for one simply wouldn't want to be seen driving an Impreza. If that makes me shallow, so be it.

the moose - I agree with all of your post apart from not wanting to buy a car becuase of its image. I don't much care what image a car has or what other people think of me becuase of the car I drive.

I'm driving a car I enjoy owning and it gives pleaure back in being a good drivers car. Hopefully the ones currently owned by those that can't really afford to own them will be destroyed or picked up by enthusiasts and restored and looked after properly.

Well a couple of days of trampling on verbal rubbish has been a fun break but I wouldn't want to waste this much time on it every day so I'll probably revert to mostly doing more constructive things with my days.
