Last year I was living alone and got a 25% reduction on the tax, why not 50% as 100% is usually for 2 people, can someone explain that rule?

When i moved into my house it was band B or C (cant remember) but after being here for a few months i got to know people on the road and 2 houses on here where band A so i rang the council and played up big time and they reduced ours to band A as they say its within our rights to be the same as others on the road
But to rub it in i went up and down the road and told everyone i new and said spread the word lol
Only bummer now is im in the middle of the nightmare moving house and up to band D i go

What about all that nice anti-skid stuff being laid all over the place, bet thats a big chunk of the road budget.
My dad is waiting for people to start pushing their cars on those bends losing it and flipping their cars over.
I think your crime is getting better though (Northants is getting worse).
When I first moved away from your patch, my car insurance dropped by quite a bit. This year I got quotes for both areas and there is no difference.
So something is working at your end.

There is no perfect solution regards local taxation.
Rates - no relationship between value of house and services consumed
Poll Tax - no relationship between tax and ability to pay
Council Tax - hybrid of the two, but people aren't happy
Apart from the amount of the council tax, does anyone think it's fundamentally unfair ?
They've tried most things, what's left to try ? Local income tax, local VAT, hotel room/tourist tax ?

council tax is double taxation - so (not including NICs) i have to earn more than £2,600 to pay my council tax of roughly £1,600. most of the money councils need is given to them by central govt. in any case. why not have done with it and add local tax onto the income tax that is collected by the IR, save a sh*t load of bureaucracy and be fairer for everyone.

Problem with local income tax (the lib dems want this) is that councils in 'rich' areas are always 'loaded' as most people earn a decent amount and taxes will come down in those areas (which typically are less dependant on local services and amenities anyway). councils in poor areas get poorer as most people don't earn much. In the latter, they would have to put the tax up which punishes the poor. There'd also be people moving away from high tax areas.
Not to say that the local tax is not the way to go. Just that it's as flawed as the other tax systems.
Ultimately, it's not so much the amount we pay (within reason) but the fact that the quality of services have not improved and much money is wasted on stupid projects and poor management. Added to the fact that people don't vote in local council elections which probably has more direct affect on quality of life than voting in the national elections! Make councils more accountable would help.
Council tax has gone up how much in recent years? But how much has services improved (my guessing is that they've got worse or at best no better).

Dracoro - i'm not advocating *local* income tax. i'm saying that money be collected and distributed centrally - so maybe put 1.5p on basic and 2p on higher income tax, or whatever it would take, and then dish out the money. obviously there would be problems as to how the money was distributed, but this could be sorted out with a complex formula, i'm sure.

Michael taking another 8% of your already taxed take home is ROUGH mate. Almost as rough as Ron having to pay the full whack for services on an empty house. Has the concept of fairness been replaced by utter contempt for its citizens in this country? WHY is it so hard to make it all work on the HUGE overall tax take we have?
Ozzy/Kav you are paying almost as much as me and don’t have the alleged ‘bonus’ of being in the centre of the world You probably have fresh air/triple driveway/trees mind
Dracoro, I think I blame the government rather than the local council. They are just trying to provide a service, but have had their central government supplied cash continually reduced over the years. It’s called a cunning Brown ‘stealth tax’ I believe – ‘stealth’ my ****!!!!
I cant wait for a Labour canvasser to come ‘round in the run up to the General Election! In fact maybe I’ll put a ‘Is £2k Council Tax fair’ poster in my window; mit make a mint selling a few!

1705.45 Band F in Cheshire, 10% of my wages, still really appreciate the two months off in Feb and March.
This year I make it my quest to ring the council about every pot hole, I will have some new alloys and front wishbones.
