Hi Chaps
I've never been a games player so never got the equipment. I've been using a joystick for this as you really need analogue control over the steering throttle and brakes as an absolute minimum. I am sure steering wheel is the ideal solution.
Regarding driving techniques / sliding through bends etc.. it's just practice, and without doubt coaching is of use. I might try to think of a way to conduct some coaching online??? If anyone has any ideas of how this might work let me know.

I use the mouse to control the car, have done since i started the game about a year ago. I have only just started playing it again but find the mouse is still the most comfy control to use, only down side to it is you can accelerat smoothly on it as its all or nothing.
The first thing i would say to do is to sign up on there forum (www.liveforspeed.com) and check out the setup page, download a few setups for each and go and test them. if you can find one that you feel fairly comfy with you can progress from there by making very little changes to improve it to your stile of driving.
Once you have the right setup you need to no the courses inside out, learning the lines for your seup. just means you need you need to spend alot of time playing it

I mainly race with the MRT5, 2 weeks back my average position was about 8/10 - 10/10 no to hot. I found a setup with was almost perfect for me and now my average position is 1/10 - 3/10 and i have broke all my personal bests by about 10 seconds.

I tried the mouse and couldn't get on with it at all, after practicing I found the keyboard to be ok, just have to apply the rules of slow in fast out on the corners and get the line spot on. If you catch the kerbs with the power on then it spins the back out big time. Too much steer into corners and the car will just go straight on so have to be very progressive on the steering. I'm still crap as if I get the slightest tail out situation I spin and can't hold it at all 
I find this unrealistic as it way over compensates and cant catch the spin and reverse steer into it and get it back into line. It just spins back the other way. The four wheel drive car though is excellent for stability on corners but understeers a lot so have to go in very slow on the corners (all this is with standard setups)
And for those who want to up their points quickly the only way I found to do it was either be very very good (which I am not) or cheat and do what I did and setup the game on home network with 4 pcs and race on the pro setting against 3 human opponents that just sit there on the grid and do nothing and earn 48 points per race with no competition

With the mouse you can easy control the backend if it goes out as you can turn as little or as much as u like, its very controlable.
************** if you get some new setups the control on the 4WD car can be changes so much. I think i have a fairly good banlanced setup at home, ill upload it tonight and give you a link for it here for you to tryout.

Anybody had any trouble installing the demo version?
I have downloaded the zip file and unzipped it but when i try and click on the LFS.exe icon all i get is a send to microsoft error and nothing happpens, i have tried the compatibility settings in XP but to no avail, any ideas anyone?
Computer spec:
Dell Inspiron 8200
P4 2.2Ghz
512MB Ram

LOL yep was good for the short time I was on, especially now I have modded my setup. Still 2-3 seconds a lap slower than you Flat4 but the ps2 adapter is in the post so I can use my ps2 steering wheel and get away from using the keyboard
One thing I would really like to learn from this is about the car settings and how to go from the standard setup to a properly modified setup that really improves the cars handling and acceleration etc. Have no idea about gear ratios/multiplyers or anything to do with setting up the car

Just tried using the keyboard assistance option and hell what a difference it makes! No wonder I was unable to control drift etc. You are supposed to have this setting on apparently I can now drift with out spinning off and doing my best times Anyone else using keyboard make sure you have this setting on!
