Have ordered it from play.com at £6.99
They kb now though is so much more usable with that setting switched on. Before you couldn't touch the accelarator mid bend for example to power out of it as it would just spin off. Now its switched on you can give it some power and control the power slide and its superb Totally changed the game for me as it was starting to be a bit unbearable having to go so slow before. I now can't wait to try it racing tonight now against you chaps

Hmmm, tried LFS last night again after shelving it for about 6months. Its still not a patch on GTR2002 (mod for F1 2002). More like a kids game tbo, my 2 m8's who were in the room watching me play LFS couldnt stop laughing at the woefull car models and Noddy car sounds. GTR has better cars, tracks, physics, sounds, netcode, servers, clans (if you can call them that), FF support, front end, tweakability etc etc yadda yadda. In fact everything. It also allows you to use other related mods such as 550 challenge, Alfa challence, M3 challenge etc. Oh and its FREE. OK I suppose LFS is better that some of the arcadey driving games about for the PC like NFS but GTR is a REAL sim, a wasted opportunity for SN racing sim petrol heads, all IMHO of course.
Perhaps Im missing something here, I'll give it another go some night and try REALLY hard to suss it out. Any help with understanding the pull of this game would be appreciated as I just dont know why everyone is bothering.
edited to say, OK GTR isnt totally free, you need F12002 which can be had bargain bin for less than LFS.

Sorry for the thread hijack as such, perhaps Im just a grumpy hard to please old fart, anyway heres a link to some info on GTR and the physics built into it. If anyone could try it and to compare it with LFS to let me know what I'm missing. I really do want to like LFS as I generally love all racing/car games.
Bravo, give it a go, you seem to like these sort of games and Im still wating to tan yer **** at something
http://www.virtualracersedge.com/
And some screenies for the uninitiated.

Doh! Deleted my GTR downloaded install file about 2 days ago mate. Never got into F12002 and GTR but find LFS totally addictive for some reason. I have bought the full version now and wont dump it for anything else now I have spent £12 on it
Don't forget LFS is only a third developed so is very basic in terms of graphics etc although I think the cars and tracks are great. Had some great racing on there with some scoobynet folks and have really got to grips with the cars handling now. Does take a while though and definately need to change all the settings to get it right for you.

I find that really surprising that you say the physics are bad. Can you explain in what way they fall down? It is important to explain exactly how they are not realistic.. not just say "GTR2002 is more realistic", etc as it won't tell us anything.
Would appreciate it, as I've heard good things about GTR2002 and want to make sure we use the very best simulation for the stuff that's coming in the future for ScoobyNet.
All the best
Simon

Why I think GTR is THE daddie of racing sims bar none :)
OK Simon here goes. For one, it is a community based and modded sim with all members of the community taking part in its overall development and future enhancements. I'm just going to concentrate on talking about the physics as I feel this is where we all want realism. I'm not going to discuss the sounds or car models which although are an important part of the immersion in virtual racing are not THE most important for us lot.
So, well Doug Arnao was in charge for developing physics. If you have heard of him then its a case of say no more.
If not Dougs GTR 2002 physics guide in PDF format can be found here and it is a must read for any petrol head. Please read this as it speaks volumes for why I think GTR has the best physics of any racing sim, bar perhaps GPL which I feel is the only other realistic driving sim available.
http://www.kiwisim.net.nz/filemgmt_d...002Physics.pdf
Briefly, GT Racing 2002 features:
* Thirty-seven cars which have been re-designed in line with the latest aerodynamics regulations
* Extensively remodelled car dynamics which take account of revised aerodynamics of the new cars
* completely revised tyre models, featuring 4 different tyre brands with individual slip curves, wear rates and temperature tolerances
* A real-time, dynamic suspension model which takes advantage of the super-high-rate physics engine
* A sophisticated brake modelling system, with warm-up, optimum temperature and fade characteristics.
You can infinately adjust:
Gearing, Brake Bias, brake duct openings, Suspension Springs - Sways and Shocks, Diff Lock, Ride Height, Toe In, Camber, Tyre Temperatures, Tyre Pressure, Tyre manufacturers, Packers, Front Splitter, Front Anti-roll bars, Rear Wing, Rear Anti-roll bars, Radiator openings, Rev Limit, Steering lock, Fuel loads. GTR also accurately models factors such as trail braking, aero torque and engine temperatures.
It has many superb online guides to help the novice set up the car such as this:
http://www.virtualracersedge.com/car_tuning_101.htm
It has realistic telemetary built in with an online world ranking system which can be found below.
http://www.findthelimit.com/
Click the link above, then GTR 2002 and have a look at the global tables on the right of the screen.
The GTR-2002-Telemetry is a modification to the original telemetry system, and has been altered to allow the upload of lap information to the FTL web-site, and full conformity with the GT cars as developed by SBDT.
Each driver is given a score (or "handicap" - similar to golf), which represents how fast that person is over the entire 17 tracks of the years calendar.
Each (fastest) laptime for the driver is compared to the actual reference times for that circuit, and the difference is noted. The GTR-2002-Rank for that driver is then the total of all the laptime differences for all the GT tracks.
As you get quicker, your score will reduce, representing the fact that you are reducing the gap between your times and the reference times.
If you do not set a laptime for a particular circuit, then you will be penalised 10 seconds for that circuit. (defaulting to a laptime 10 seconds slower than the pole time).
If you are very quick, then your score will go negative.
In online races driving aids are a no-no.
The following aids are NOT allowed in most online races
- Braking Point Assistance
- Anti-Lock Braking
- Steering Help
- Opposite Lock Help
- Stability Control
- Spin Recovery
- Traction Control
You must also turn Damage ON, Mechanical Failures ON, and Tyre Wear ON.
If you need to any more hopefully you will DL the mod and give it a go. As Ive said its free to dl although you need a copy of F12002.
A good list of links can be found here for further info although the info on GTR is so extensive just Google away.
http://www.virtualracersedge.com/lin...s/bookmark.htm
The above is only a fraction of the reasons why I think GTR 2002 is THE daddie of racing sims, for the rest you will need to drive it

i was addicted to GTR last year, did hundreds of laps hotlapping and managed to get into the top 5 UK ranking i think the physics are one of the best i've played - i must admit that LFS does lack in the graphics & sounds stakes though

I'd get a new sound card then or some headphones
TBO as Kev said I prefer my driving sims to sound like they have something under the bonnet other than a wasp in a bottle trying to out do an undervolted food mixer

Kev, hotlapping, now there was something that I wasted many a month on With only enough fuel and softs good for the one warmup and said hotlap. Mines were more warm than hot though, lol
What was your racing name at FTL? Mine was JohnC, I never got anywhere near the top five, was always about 4 - 5 seconds off the pace at the likes of Spa. Where I did excell was the longer online races, say 75% distance or over two hours of play with practice etc. Actually manged to win a few online races, which I was pretty chuffed at racing against the likes of Neon, Christo, Sebaz and Gillish all world class racers.
Used to frequent the GTR irc chans and the old brinkster webby.
now at http://users.domaindlx.com/GTR2002/?page=multiR
One of my wins was highlighted at the bottom of the page followed by my celebration

This is true. But, it doesnt have to be that way if SN ran a server
The game can be made more accessible and who doesnt want to drive a GTR Lambo Diablo, 550 or even NGT 360

LEUVEN yes, as Flat says tis free dl m8, 270 meg though with a 50 meg patch on top of it. GTR peeps do take it more 'seriously', but thats why GTR is classed as a sim with world rankings and world class players, its not some brain off dodgem car pick it up and drive well in 2 mins game tbo. If I was racing at a 'rl' track day in my 'rl' car I wouldnt want someone banging me cars doors for fun just to get ahead. Remember folks, this is a simulation, not some Playstation or Xbox console bash em up flat out on every corner with no braking needed game, look out PGR2 for that sort of wham bam action, I know I do.
I dont mind a bit of mindless racing with a few beers in me but I also appreciate a bit of 'realistic' driving with harsh consequences. When I was playing GTR at international level many a time I spun out in the first few laps only to sit on the sidelines wondering wtf after I had just spent 2 hrs practicing for a race. Harsh but true. If you take it a bit seriously then yeah, it can be v harsh, but then the rewards are as great as anything else that takes commitment, skill and a bit of effort. You get nothing for nothing

BTW its looking less and less that LFS is a simulation for petrolheads and more that its like an advanced PGR2 from what I'm reading here. And we all know how long PGR2 lasted on SN
