Hi chaps,
Pete, work was done at Tiley's in Bristol as I'm miles from you. They had a really hard job fitting the Up-pipe as they had not done one before. Aparently the bolts would not come of and stripped their threads etc... They said they had to undo the engine mounts and jack it up to gain access. So whether this is the root of the problem, I'm not sure. Took them 7hrs in all!!! Thankfully they were good enough to only charge me for 4, still OUCH though!!
Given the overall size of the OE DP that came off compared with the SS DP going on, there ought to be bags of room. Been so busy havn't had time to really investigate. But it';s unnerving when giving it some round a bend. Will have a good nose at lunch and report back. Will see if I can borrow a digital camera and get a pic.

OK, no camera, it's on loan to someone out of the office. 
Had a good look and the steering linkage is fouling the heatshield, why this should occur now & not before is a mystery as the SS DP is well clear of it. Perhaps not put back on exactly the same as it was originally, or is there some other reason?
Not much good with engines - is is easy to re-align, will that fix it - how, is it easy? Is a better solution to bash it thus putting a dent where it hits? Is the norm to remove the shield with an aftermarket exhaust?

Certainly for the PE down pipe, you must either leave it off (not recommended) or chop a lump off to clear the larger expanse of downpipe.
I used an angle grinder to 'adjust' my heatshield. It is now bolted on fine.
Maybe the guys who fitted yours didn't trim the shield, and so couldn't put all the bolts back in. I.e. it's might be 'off wonk'.

Yes, if you don't mind losing all the skin on your knuckles.
I recommend you get a ratchet spanner - 10mm I think, but check. It makes it easier to reach some of the bolts - the gaps down the side of the heat shield are pretty small.
btw, you'll need to remove the intercooler and one of its brackets in order to get the shield out.

P.S. Suggestions are based on my 99/00MY. It may be slightly different for other years.
