I've got an STi8 ( to you Mike) with PPP+18s+springs etc, but I'm choosing to go down the WR1 route.

Quite frankly, the DCCD is something we've all been crying out for on a UK model, and to get it on the WR1 for a nominal amount more than the STi + extras is, IMHO, good value for money.

Although I'm not 100% sure about the colour, I think they've made a good decsion to use a colour unavailable on other UK cars, as they did with the RB5 (and I wasn't too sure about that colour either).

As for the power, well we'll have to wait and see, but if they're adding parts, surely that would increase the PPP costs, and that only if they could be carried over. At the end of the day, they might not want to carry them over, and give the WR1 a little more exclusivity.

Of course if people choose to wait to see what improvements Prodrive come up with next time, that's their choice, but if everyone did that nobody would have one. I prefer to go for the best available at the time, and no to regret it. I mean, how stupid would you feel if you'd actually bought an Apple IIe for £1000+ in the early 80's? It's the nature of things to improve with development. I also prefer to do things that won't effect my warranty. Some people would say I was being a wuss, others that I was been astute. Each to his own.

At the end of the day, I still believe the tax disc holder's worth £30k on it's own. (do I get a free car now Mike?)

If you can afford to take the "driving out of the showroom depreciation hit" on an Sti8/9 with PPP and all the toys and buy a WR1 then fine, but I believe that a significant proportion of STi8/9 owners cannot afford to just throw money away like that and if they could they might possibly buy a different car in the first place.

Therefore I can understand why having invested so much money in a 300 BHP monster STI8/9 owners would want to have the option to get the same engine characteristics as the WR1.

Thumbs up

Rum, I need a quote from you please. Need car insurance to start in 3 days.

Mike; Thanks for the feedback, but still not completely happy with my "old" style system. Ran the car for nearly a year before Subaru gave me the up rated fuel pump and what happens once the warrenty is all used up, bearing in mind I don’t want to give Subaru any more money than I have already and right now plan on keeping the car a few more years. (This is my third Subaru and I can’t afford to loose any more money on em. Still suffering from when the 03MY Sti’s came out!) Don’t even want to ask what they need to change from my low mileage immaculate motor with over 6K of Subaru and Prodrive extras already on it to a WR1....12K, 13K, 14K, 15K.....
And I still can’t see true boost pressure on my Secs systems; If I had know that I would have gone for Defi’s or something different...

Martin; I offshore right now for 3 weeks, but will look forward to the next time home; would love to meet up! About time the local cars came down on the Cairn o mount road for a blast. Real interested in finding out about the Dccd as well.

I think you will find that the £500 is for their ECU to control a DCCD car. It won't include the centre differential, drop gears, loom, switch and rear diff that you would need to convert a vc equipped car.

Mike for us lesser mortals with WRX03 PPP will there be after it's been tested any upgrades that we can purchase for our PPP system.

Jools, SECS now do an upgrade that allows you to use an external sensor to read real boost for those cars that have boost clamp PPP or manifold relative presure clipped at 1.27BAR by the ECU output. (STi5 for example). It's an easy upgrade path for you and relative cheap.

People are fogetting the 13:1 quickrack fitted to the WR1, thats worth over £1000 on its own. And mike is right, the townend garage centre diff setup is just an ECU for the centre diff for DCCD equipped cars, it will cost you an absolute fortune to install a DCCD-A system to a non DCCD equipped car.

And another thing, can we stop using STi7/STi8 to describe the cars please. If you want to use this number sequence (that stopped at STi6) then an 03MY STi should be an STi9 and hence a WR1 is an STi10.
Hallelujah!

...And in one fell swoop the Angel Michael finally put a stop to (or at the very least corrected) all this number nonsense!

No chance. You cant kill off the STi8/9/10 number system, people dont want too and will continue to use it. It's a bit like the V-Limited naming, no car was called a V-Limited until this years 2003 V-Limited was launched, but you cant stop people calling an STi5 Type RA Limited an STi5 Type RA V-Limited, they just wont have it! LOL

Bet you a £10er.

Don't mind if they stick with it, as long as they stick with the same one. Mike's version is the only one that has ever had a logic behind it. All these folk calling MY03 UK STi's "STi8"'s are just confusing the issue...

Ha Ha shouldn't have brought a peasant spec WRX (DBY) John

A Prodrive *** lighter is all you'll get for your old boat.

Any danger of a Legacy PPP ?

John F - 1000 squid for quick rack? - surely not - grade-a in hayfield do them brand new for £250 iirc

nope this wr1 is just another poor substitute for the real (JDM) thing and expensive with it ...

...though things are much worse in the legacy fraternity - uk/europe is now the only location that doesn't get a twin scroll turbo car - australia and usa now get one while we have to put up with the NA h6 as top model - shame on you IM!

Tom - interesting aside about 'rates' - would you care to expand on this ? - maybe in the insurance section??

the naming is so inconsistent, even on the Subaru websites S.B. But if you look at the brochures and the name plaques on the cars, they are all plain jane "limited" not V-Limited, until this years 2003 V-Limited came out.

It's a little misleading to quote the dealer price of one of these as a spare part John. It's not as though the cars arrive here with a normal rack and IM take it out and put the quickrack in.

The cars are built with the quickrack in Japan, so any increase in cost in this area would be the difference in price between the normal steering rack and the quick one. Seeing as the only real difference is a tooth or two more on the pinion, it's not as though the quickrack would cost a lot more than the standard one to make...

I think that is pretty obvious. You can say the same to the DCCD or anything else on a car to a certain extent. The point i am making is relating to people who are saying all you need do is buy an STi8 PPP, if they were to do that it would cost them £1000 + for a rack via a dealer. It would cost thousands to buy the DCCD-A kit if they wanted to upgrade to that spec later too.

Obviously Subaru just pay the diference in manufacturing the parts, but thats not what we are able to do.

Yep, agreed entirely. The folx who are saying that the WR1 is "just" an STi8 with all the bits from the Prodrive parts bin are missing the point.

[for MW]

Are you able to say anything more about such retrofit development as there may be, Mike?? Like Jools, I've got a Piggyback 02STi/PPP and, however much I'd like a WR1, can't afford to change this soon - so I'll be running on. If there are further driveability gains as well as the quoted 5% Power & Torque, then I'm happy to pay an appropriate fee for modfied ECU and, if I have to, '03 scoop.
