I read guidance on the ARP site that they do, but opinions vary.
I don't know exactly how they were torqued up. I gather the correct procedure is to torque them to about 65 lbft and then back them off and repeat about five times. This ensures they are stretched.
I even saw a recommendation to then run the engine until hot, retorque again, then run for 600 miles and retorque again.
Oh to have an inline four!

John what head gasket and engine gasket set did you use on your 2.5 ?
I'd not thought about gasket sets until yesterday. I've been given a price of @ $250 for the complete set.

arp retorque crap.....
John, you should not have to retorque the arp studs, regardless of who says what. I have been using them without worries for some time now.
The procedure to use is this. Always tighten in the same sequence order, it doesn't have to be exactly as Subaru manual says, but do the middle top first, middle bottom next then cross the outer corners as you go. I tighten them in 4 steps. 1st step to 25ft lbs. 2nd step to 45lbs, 3rd to 65lbs, then finally I end at 75lbs. This is with the arp lube. If you use motor oil, the final torque spec will be 85lbs. If you are using the factory gasket, then yes you will have to torque to 65 ftlbs, then back off to "seat" the gasket. I always use Cometic gaskets and they don't require a back off step.
For those that want the Cometic gaskets, I have plenty. Email me for pricing.
I also have about 20 ej257 shortmotors available. 10 are at the dealer, and the others are on the way.

Please could all those people still interested in the groupbuy send me an e-mail address so I can contact you.
I want to secure the engines within a week as they seem to be selling very quickly and supply looks limited.

Mark I am useless with this new BBS software, can you post up your email address please.
Thanks for the input Ron. It could be that I overheated it as Quirt is suggesting.

Gents, my headgasket failures are bilateral and in all quadrants around every cylinder, so it appears to be from the heads lifting due to inadequate clamping force. The pistons and block have stood up very well to 6000 miles with 5000 of that over 400 BHP, and the heads are uncracked and square.
I would recommend the EJ257 block with confidence after seeing how good the internals are looking.
