Edited my above post and hopefully can put it down to my last bit of the edit
Glad you got the Haicom, I at first thought they were well expensive until I did a search on google and came up with some cheaper ones. The bloke at Global Positioning Systems highly recommended the Haicom and at that price I snapped his arm off
as it was the same price as the gps mouse I had bought and promptly exchanged them (the mouse was just too all cable everywhere and no portability).

whats the cheapest way for a decent system as far as i can see i will need
gps card ??? not clear about what this is
memory card like compact flash? 256mb?
and a pda with tom tom software
what else? links to what i need and explanations of how it works would be cool?

Ok my setup is
Dell Axim X5 www.dell.co.uk From £150+
256mb SD card (for memory) www.dabs.co.uk form £50+
GPS Compact Flash card (this is the gps receiver and fits into the compact flash slot on the pda) www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk look for the one I mentioned above (the Haicom HI-302) From £89+
The above bits are the basic hardware. On top of this you will need a car mount. Two choices I looked at were brodit made mounts for the car and the TomTom one. I went for the TomTom one for £49 which came with various ways of attaching the pda in the car. It also includes a charger and also a hard wiring power solution.
Then you need the software itself and the most popular seems to be TomTom Navigator 2 www.tomtom.co.uk
Hope this helps.
Edited to say I have no idea about speed camera detectors as never used one but I am running an add on for TomTom Navigator which is a speed camera point of interst overlay for the maps. It is not that reliable though. Look at www.pocketgps.co.uk

Well I'm sure the X3 has a compact flash slot doesn't it? Not seen one but would be very surprised if it didn't have one! Even if you didn't have a compact flash slot then you could get a gps mouse which will plug into the pda, just means you don't have portability like the comapct flash gps unit.
My advice get a Ipaq h2210 from ebuyer £288.96
256 of SD Memory, for a bit of expansion £57.57
You get CF and SD slots, small form factor like the x3 with a cradle running at 400mhz.
Use the CF slot for antenna either Holux GM270 or Haicom HI-302 which is cheaper if you have a Road Angel, Holux sell a cable to download the R/A antenna to your PDA for about £30.00
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A GPS mouse will trail across you dashboard, not my first choice, but it will work.
Or use Blue tooth which is built in as standard to the Ipaq h2210 but not my choice as you will have to keep the Bluetooth antenna powered and or charged separately.
The Axim X5 is a little on the chunky side, OK if you like that sort of thing, but it will give you both CF and SD slots.
Get a Brodit holder, remember anything stuck on the wind screen could be the first thing to go through your head in an accident.
Mount it at eye level over the vent because you don’t want to be looking down when you are driving, it if a shame to loose the vent but it mounted forward enough to still let it work with out problem.
Agree with **************: post concerning TomTom2

**************:The X3 is not meant to supersede the X5, the product is being sold as another product in the range, daft aint it.
Like I said, buy the Ipaq, time you add on the Dell cradle and upgrade the x5 the price is not so bad, the Ipaqs price have come down lately.

Oh right, once I got my X5 I stopped looking at them and as I got mine through Dell outlet for £150 I thought they were last in the line as it was just when the X3 was being released. Wouldn't buy any pda without a cf slot.
LOL @ the comment about the holder going through the head - i'll start wearing my crash helmet

Just to note, the DELL outlet products are not new but come with a as new warrantee, They are possibly returned and fixed / second-hand / refurbished / factory rejects, who knows.
Also when I looked at then they did not come with pocket pc 2003 software, they were using the old 2002 version.
If all this does not matter to you and you want to spend as little as possible fine, just keeping others aware of what they are buying.
Yep if the PDA smacks you on the nose in an accident, at least you will be cushioned by the airbag when you fall forward
Chrisowe:
You are essentially buying in to a maintained data base, maybe even direction sensitive to onward facing units, don’t know anything about the product keep us informed what you find out.
We are all learning on here, that’s what makes it a cool place to hang out.
