Right here goes..
thinking about buying a PDA and linking TomTom Nav..but i am unsure of what the best package to go for..
I have done a search on here and managed to gain some info as well as loads of websites..
I quite like the look of the Dell Axim..but not sure which would be the best model so advise from owners would be good..
Also the Ipaq stuff looks good but it is generally more expensive?
I am not particularly worried about the bluetooth route but quite like the idea of the GPS unit fitting either into the PDAs CF slot or being wired on the dash..
I would like to purchase as a bundle to hopefully get the best deal
Any info from current owners of such setups would be gratefully received..
Oh and by the way , Happy New year to all on Scoobynet..
Regards

I think the Dell Axim is probably the cheapest Pocket Pc around at the moment.
I have just bought a Compaq Ipaq 2210 to get GPS software at a later date it has compactflash and SD card slots plus bluetooth for £299, I believe the Axim is slightly less but lacks the bluetooth AFAIK.
Impressions so far great little machine, excellent build quality, superb screen and fast. Highly recommended.
Now to get that Fortuna GPS clip on and Tomtom Nav.
You could try www.globalpositioninysystems.co.uk for the best package deal.

I bought a 400MHz Dell Axim from the states for £132 all in. CF GPS was £70 from Hong Kong, 128meg MMC card £30 from ebuyer and a copy of tomtom.
Very cheap way to get satnav, and the package as a whole is excellent.

Yep I have pretty much the same as King RA and the TomTom car kit which at @ £49 was a tad expensive but it does the job perfectly, I use the windscreen sucker with the twisty arm so can position the Axim to exactly where I want it.
Have only used the navigation properly once driving to Bolton and it was excellent and took me staright to the door. However on the way back for some reason it calculated a different route and although I ignored it and went the same way I travelled up it kept telling me to turn round and go back and take the route it calculated which was cr@p as if I was actually relying on it for directions on the way home it would have wasted loads of time. Don't know why it wouldn't recalculate to the same route as I travelled up on

I've heard that blue tooth drains the battery and can often drop the link, at which time you won't know unless you are watching the screen...
I've picked up a secondhand Ipaq H3760 64mb for £50, and am now looking for a cheap GPS mouse and windscreen mount. I've been told that I'll need a CF card and extra memory to load all the UK maps, but will run with 64mb with not all maps loaded in the meantime.
I already have TomTom
All in all the whole package should cost me about £115 -125. Bargain!

I still think I'd prefer the bluetooth route frees up both memory slots, and it also means you can use it with other non pda devices like laptops.

The best price I have found for the Fortuna bluetooth gps is £129 from E-bay so far. The unit comes with a car charging cable and replaceable Nokia phone style battery, although it should last about 6 hrs on a full charge.
It just seems a more flexible option to me.

Ajax have you actually read my posts? I know its not memory ffs, I use a compact flash gps card so I know what they are All I was saying is that it is not necessary to spend a fortune on a compact flash gps card like £150 etc as they are available for about £80 (the same as a gps mouse which is a waste of time in comparison) which is what mine cost and works very well. For less than £150 you can have a 256mb sd card for the memory and a gps compact flash card!

OK cool, just took your posts the wrong way then as I thought I was making it clear that I was referring to a GPS compact flash card and you were talking down to me saying I didn't know what I was talking about etc.
Like I said was just trying to help you out on the fact that when you posted what one for £150 you don't need to spend that much dosh. I got mine from www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk for £80 and it works a treat. Its the Haicom HI-302. Do a search for it and get one as I highly recommend it and you get a mouse with it as well that screws into the compact flash receiver so you can put the mouse right up at the front of the windscreen if need be. However I have neever needed to use the mouse as the card is so good even in attrocious weather.

I have read back through your post
Page one: My CF card was about £80 and is excellent. No need for such expensive ones.
No mention that this is a CF GPS Antenna, this made me think you did not know what it was, I was at this point I said you had missed the point as j-k wanted SD memory and CF GPS
Page Two: Ajax what u on about mate? My compact flash gps card cost about £80 and I have a 256mb sd card for the memory! I was saying there is no need to buy an expensive compact flash gps card as they arnt all megabucks!
Agreed you have said CF at this point but thought at £80.00 seemed to cheep, and I was not sure you knew what it was, but prior to this you were asking me what I was on about, when you had not told us before on page one.
They are now dearer now but at £89.94 incl. VAT at globalpositioningsystems.co.uk but very inexpensive even at that price, this is a good price as I have been looking at £150, perhaps if you had told us what type of CF GPS you had it might have been helpful, and less contentious.
Thanks for info on Haicom HI-302, gona order up two of them.
Cheers Ajax
