just been having ratch on autotrader and there was a couple of 98 V5's for about £7-8K. Is t better keeping clear of cars in that price bracket? (this one also had an FMIC)

Given the prices that UK turbos seem to be going for in the for sale section, its rather worrying seeing as a car 2 year older can be worth twice as much.

Looking for one thats unmodified really so I can molest it myself.

 

I think you might struggle to find an unmodded one these days. And all I have to say on a V5 Type R for sub £10k.... you get what you pay for.

Bear in mind if its unmodded, it wont have been remapped... and its not like you're going to find one that hasnt been previously owned in the UK anymore so, how much do you trust that its always been run on Optimax AND booster?
I wouldnt like to risk it.

Also, I just had a quick look on the 'trader, the first 2 I looked at both had traction control apparently, they're obviously well clued up on what they're selling, Im sure they clued up on how to look after them too

 

19mph/1000rpm in top. Think thats with the longer 5th that the v.ltds have though. Not sure on the std 5th. Top's around 150max depending on wheel size. Thats also with 4.4 diff's. 80mph is just over 4k rpm. Not the best for motorways. Correct me if i'm wrong anyone.

 

There's a v5 ltd in fast and modified this month for around 9.5k. think its around 38k on the clock and hardly touched with mods.

 

i like the ride of my v4 but want to lower it, anyone done this , with just springs , any recommendations?????????

Ive been looking at Type R's on autotrader for a few months now just kinda seeing what they go for i was thinking of spending about 8-8.5k but reading on here tonight i dont think it will buy me a good example since some of them
have about 60k miles and from what ive read on here should be in need of an engine rebuild, So how bad is the engine problem on an R and should i consider buying 1 with a blown motor, i was thinkin of a MY98 with dccd in white.

All type r's have dccd. I wouldnt even entertain the thought of buying one with a blown motor unless you had plans to put your own engine in anyway. It costs time and money rebuilding an engine. Also might be an indicator as to how the car was treated/driven....

 

I think the chances of me finding an unmodified car are slim - although I was referring to heavy modifications when I said I wanted a standard car.


Preferably I'd be looking for a car that has been remapped for UK fuel.

do the V5's have 4 pots as standard?

 

paul yea they have 4pots on the front and 2 pots on the rear which the p1 does'nt have i'll be at the next meet, you can pick my brains(wont take long ) if you want. what your looking for shouldnt be much of a problem as most cars have a decat and remap/ecu and usually a set of wheels, as the car is fast enough for the road

i dont really want to do the blown motor option, i was thinking buyin an R cheaper, rebuild the motor and have the car with a rebuilt motor for about the same price (that was the theory anyway lol)

Do all type R's have dccd? i was lead to think they came with either ABS or DCCD but not both am i right with this or not?

I can give you the number for a v5 sti v.ltd for sale at just under £10k with 50k on the clock. Only mods are a decat and filter i think.

 

standard version 5 dampers with eibach springs bump stear mod, rear upper strunt brace standard front strutbrace. not very low looks almost standard but the handling is awesome, better than my old uk turbo on avo coilovers

What effect would I get from teh following :

- Cusco coilovers - does anyone know how hard these are ?
- WL ALK
- Uprated droplinks

Keep standard strut bars or would i be better off changing them as well ?

Very hard. Changing damper settings (under bonnet and removing rear seats and rear shelf) only makes them more or less bouncy.

Would be perfect for flat roads, but uncomfortable on uneven surfaces. Plus you get 'tsseeww', 'tsseeww' noises over every bump you go over... so they can be annoying.

But... having said all that - when you get the right conditions - they are superb! It's like you're driving on your own set of rails...

 

I'm thinking my HKS coilovers will be very similar to the cusco's. They'll be used for hillclimbs and sprints so road manners are not too important. Is it the spring's that are the governing factor as these could be changed to a lesser spring rate i would imagine as opposed to the damping....

 

Cuscos, depending on type aren't really that bad. However, this is comming from my experience on US roads. I have no idea how roads over there are, yet.

HKS coilovers have in my opinion too many dampening settings. Cusco has 5. 1-5. 1 being the softest, 5 being the hardest.

I cannot say much though, as I have JIC Magic coilovers... those are EXTREMELY hard.
