130bhp, would you bother??
You only have to look at some of the american cars, they are brutal in a straight line but will not go arround corners. Horse power is not everything but it is still nice to have. The simple equation is everytime you double the weight you have to tripple the power.
ive just bought a new toy with approx 130 bhp the car weights approx 460kg the car will wheel spin in te wet in sixth and will out excelerate my sti7 ppp.the car is a westfield megablade with a 900cc fireblade engine which has been dynojetted it also sounds better than my scoob
higgSti,
Beat me to it, I was gonna say, my 'old Westie megablade had 130ish BHP and would see off anything really, including 600cc sports bikes. 130ish BHP + 465KGS = mmm.....300BHP/Tonne nearly.
Proby

My Mondeo has 125 bhp and its very slow, that extra 5 bhp would transform it........
When I say slow, I mean compared to just about any performance car, it will supposedly do nearly 130 mph, would take over a year to get to that speed though.

Figures schmiggers...
There is what it says on paper, and what it does on the open road. It's also got a lot to do with other factors, gear box, gear ratios, power to weight ratios, obviously chassis and suspension set up.
If you look in the back of Evo which is a great resources for comparing stuff, sometimes the big BHP figures, dont' affect 0-60 times.
Examples:
The daddy - Mk1 Golf GTI - 112bhp - 0-60 = 8.1 this started production in 1982!!! Handles like a go cart, and even with fairly slow standard stats, would still give the modern hatchs a run for their money on the b-roads.
Daddies Cousin: 205 GTI 1.9 - 130bhp - 0-60 = 7.9 started prodcution in 88' - also a thumper of a hatch.
Saxo VTS maxpower fav: 120bhp - 0-60 = 7.6! This is a great little car, not quite as good as the 206gti (IMO), but think this has variable valve timing, the privilage of several decades of technology advances, but not much off the originators.
Golf R32 204bhp (v6 guzzler) 0-60 = 7.1 - yeah that is quick, but not that much quicker than a saxo or even a 205gti £23k almost double the price of a saxo. Little bit of tuning of all the above, can get some great results.
OK the Golf equiv. R32 is a monster, but look at the price tag, it's not the affordable / accessible sports car it was introduced as any more. Manufacturers don't want to make cheap good cars any more, the market is too competitive, their is too much consolidation, and there is more money to be made from upmarket stuff. That's what makes cars like the VTS great, it's an affordable bundle of fun. As someone alreayd mentioned XR2's etc also capable hatches. (turbo was only about 133 as well wasn't it)?
Anyway, figures on paper dont' always relate to drivabilty and fun, it's not all about excelleration, good cars need lots of other stuff.
Also the actual figures stated for scoobs are not the figures that go through the wheels, power gets lost through the drive chain AWD system etc, yet you cannot argue this car is a very quick car, on paper there are a lot of cars that should be it, but in reality the can't, bhp is only good if you can get it through the wheels and moving you foward. I been in a highly modified scoob, at traffic lights, with very high revs, dropped clutch, all that power striaght on the road, no wheel spin - just a little squeek, then head in the seat acceleration - awesome. Try getting any 200bhp fwd and rwd cars to do that, with out lots of smoke coming off the tires
Although dropping full revs on a scoob does make the clutch smell pretty bad he he.

hmph says 130 in back of evo, but as the car only weighs, 910kg, that works out to 145 per ton.
And you're right, I loved that car when I was a lad, I mean REALLY loved that car, one of my mates took me through dartmoor, when I was a wee lad, stuck to the road like it was on rails, made that lovely old skool hot hatch sound...Let me have a wee drive, but not in anger
well would you, I was only about 15 he he!
And when ever you read articles from motoring hacks about modern hot hatchs, they nearly always compare it to mk1/2 gti golf and the 205gti, which says it all really.

130BHP as standard but with a few small mods you get 136BHP at the flywheel and thats from a 13 year old engine. As for the weight mine is gutted from the racing seats back, apart from a roll cage that is. No it aint the fastest car in the world and it wont catch my 172 or my scoob but it makes me grin everytime i drive it.
Infact my other half didnt go alot on it till she drove it and now she wants to swap the 172 for it with me .....NOT A CHANCE

LOL!
I did think about one, but really hard to get a good'en, am I not technically smart enough to spot a good one, but if you could get a mint, would love to have one. Classic car in the making. I would also like a mint MK1 Golf GTi, they arne't that fast either, but they'll bring a smile to your face too!

I just sold a MK2 Golf GTI afer us having it fifteen years, it was a beast, only a few mods but the fun factor was off the scale and it was amazing what stuff you could surprise, 180 bhp Audi TT's could be worried senseless, I think it was as what power it had was very accessible (and noisy), have replaced it with a Mondeo for a quiet life until Scoob ownership next summer and although its a nice car, thats all it is, a car, mode of transport, a to b, every drive in that Golf was a bit of an adventure as you didnt know what would want a go next !
mynickers there are still some good 205's out there ...... I bought my mate an 'E' reg 205 CTi (cabriolet) on friday. 48,000 miles from new, garaged all its life, 2 owners from new, full service history unmarked, elderly lady owner driver ...... All that for £900 .......... I reckon the car is worth around £1,500 at least. Cant believe i didnt keep it for myself
