130 bhp, its a figure from the early 80's. Anythin these days with that horse will get eaten up by the boy racers in their saxo's, corsa's etc. Its just not enough!! Would you bother??

Question

Depends what car it's in! in a scoob, no, cos she's a lardy bus, but i've got just that amount in my Mk1 fiesta and have nooo problem slaughtering saxos and other sh!te of that ilk.

Besides, horsepower sells engines, TORQUE wins races...

Pilkster, you seem to forget that different people have different needs from their cars so yes some people would bother.

At the same time some people would laugh at 260bhp.

Had a 1987 Golf Mk2 GTi 8v tuned to 160 bhp at the wheels. Cracking car, felt faster than my scoob from 30-100mph and could hit 145mph 4-up.

So, all depends on the car really; consider the chasis, weight, tyres etc as to whether it'll be any good or not.

If it's an 80's car it's probably worth peanuts - buy it and have some fun.

My SuperSeven started out with 135bhp and that would see off most things.

I used to have a MK2 GOlf 16v awith 139bhp! Plenty fast enough for a hot hatch (0-60 in about 8secs) but also has very good handling and is comparitively light thus more nimble and much more chuckable.

Bascially Power to Weight ratio is more important, hence Lotus 7 type cars whipping nearly all and sundry with little amount of horses and fantastic handling.

Cough Cough cough! High horses wins races. Otherwise diesels would be the track engine of choice!

Bit of a stupid post this, 130bhp what in? This power output in a corsa/mini or even saxo/106 is a good figure. As far as Imprezas go if you have this figure then you are obviously not driving the car for its performance are you.

His 208 HP 97 UK Turbo lost to a Corsa on 18 inch rims the other day, that's why.

Back in the early 90's this was the horsepower to aim for, it was only the cossies and chipped turbo's that were getting more. I had a 309 gti back then and it was plenty fast enough, in the right car 130bhp is plenty fast enough today (obviously not in a 2 ton merc).

High horses gives better top speed, torque gives better acceleration.
Look at world super bikes the 1000 cc twin cylinder Ducati gives less horsepower but more torque than the 1000cc 4 cylinder bikes, the only time the high horsepower bikes have an advantage is on long straights, the ducati's get the power down much faster on the twisties.

Quite wrong. Mean horsepower determines rate of acceleration. More torque at at x RPM means more power, hence more acceleration when using x RPM.

It's all about power to weight ratio.
My SuperSeven weights about a third of the original mini. When it had 135bhp is was fast now it has a VTec producing 189bhp it is very fast

Just I got cut up on the roundabout leading off the M4 at Maidenhead joing the dual carraige way to Marlow/Wycome. I beeped at the silver Puma to warn how close he was and that he was cutting me up only for the ignorant ***** to stick his middle finger up, I just laughed to myself and carried on with my journey.

Just annoyed me that someone who was blatantly taking the p*ss has the cheek to turn round and basically say FU I don't give a toss about you or your safety.

Not saying it was you mate but does seem to be a small World we live in!

Sorry mate not me but I guess it's the same one that Mad Mark has come across. Mine has a ring sticker on the boot to identify it. I never really use the M4.

"130bhp why bother"

erm, my AE86 has a mere 124bhp and provided more fun than any other car I've ever driven...power isn't everything.

I've been in many a powerful Scoob and none have thrilled me like the Corolla.

so ner.

Agreed that its dependant on which car is running 130bhp cause its down to power to weight, and how the car gets that power to the road.

LOL @ The Twisties being mentioned, the quest for a thread on SN where that isnt brought up continues........

Cheers,
Grant
