Cool

I had my Legacy tested (custom made by JP Exhausts) at my local police station after I was stopped for overtaking on a clear road with great visibility. I think the reason the noise upsets people so much is that whilst they may not be massively loud, scoobs do tend to be very bassy generally, & bass is the best sound for travelling distance & penetrating neighbours walls

An old lady (who the coppers think is Baarmy) wacked the bonet of my 4*4 with her walking stick and left a huge dent in it... said it "makes too much noise" (she was thinking of my scooby) i didn't take any action just got it repaired because she was nice to me when i was kid she hasn't done anything silly like that since...

As mentioned before try being diplomatic might be for the best and she may even let you park on her drive

Still reckon holding a scooby meet outside her house is the way to win one over her

Wow! took a while to read through all the replies. Some funny ideas there, but I dont think weel be having a meet at my house, sorry to dissapoint! LOL

I must say, the time that she started to take pictures of me, I was actualy trying to reason with her then. I explained that I only park there when there is no practical alternative, but no good
Its not just me shes got it in for too, shes left noted on other peoples cars numerous times.

Sonic, I may well take you up on your offer if I dont get something sorted tomorrow, cheers mate Vegas, you licky git!

Spoon, I aint done nothing wrong mate, I try to be as quiet as possible coming in at night to avoid this sort of thing, Im not some sort of bully, Im being VICTIMISED. Im just not prepared to park my car 100m down the road when theres a perfectly legal space on the other side of the road unused.

Rob.

I can't remember if the offence is blocking someone's way ON or OFF the highway.

Shows how long its been since I was on the streets

I can sympathise mate. I've got a neighbour who's an ar$3hole when it comes to parking outside his house. I've often felt like doing something I'll later regret

What gives you lot the right to cause noise and disturbance in a residential area?? Just because you want to look like a Nova boy with a drainpipe exhaust and de-cat!!??

Now, I love the burble of the Scoobie just as much as the next man, BUT we have a couple of Nova, Saxo, BMW drivers round here with de-cats and drainpipes......add to that loud boomboxes and you have a fukcing noisy rabble!!

After I had shoved the pipe right up your 4rse I would have called the police in to take soundings AND make you get an MOT - with a decat it would FAIL and I would keep on until you mended your ways! I would push for them to confiscate your car too .... nothing personal, just I HATE noise - its selfish and childish!

Thats how mad it makes me - noisy rabble!!

But on the flip side of this has no one been p###ed off when people park outside your own houses and you can't find a space for yourself??, i had a neighbor like that, they have a drive but choose to park on the road outside their house, so any visitors to them park outside mine, the worst of it was that there is a double space outside mine, for me and other neighbor but the parents of my neighbor (who seem to come round every other day) only seemed to be able to park their fiesta slap in the middle of the spaces, where am i supposed to park. They don't do it now as me and the other neighbor have blocked them in a few times and ignored their knocks at the door to let them out.

Anyway back to the original thread, have you got any mates with motorbikes, if she thinks a scooby is loud, wait till she hears a sports bike with race exhaust at 15,000 rpm.
Or maybe invite the local hells angels round to her house for a burnout competition.

Pi$$es me off when people think they own the road and have exclusive rights to it.

I was stopped once by a female pedestrian whilst driving along a road to get to my house. The road is in a built up area and runs parallel with a main road, which is littered with traffic lights.

The road that I was on, directly joins onto my street so its a nice short cut, missing all the lights.

Anyway, my point is that she stopped me and told me I had no "******* right" driving along her road cos I didn't live in it!!

I referred her to my tax disc, telling her I had as much right to be on it as she, and told her to **** off. I promptly left before I said something I might later regret....

As long as you aren't doing anything that'll get you into trouble with the law, carry on doing what you do.

Poor old dear.

Rob you need to have a chat with her, before it starts to snowball. What you will find is this, she knows your car is a bit on the loud side, and this has rattled her cage. But now when she is sat in her living room, or lying in her bed, and she hears a car go passed with a loud exhaust, she will automatcally blame you.
Wheather its you or not.

Swallow your pride and give her a knock, if she ***** you off then at least you tried.

Plan B. I will drive up and down your road, then you knock on the old dears door and say 'See I told you it wasnt me, its HIM (pointing towards my car rumbling down the road), he has moved in a few streets further down. He works in a night club and thats why he drives past at 3 in the morning'.

Good luck Yoza

I think the problem with approaching her is, if she is truly "barmy" as suggested earlier, then she may relay inaccurate stories of your "visit" or "visits" to the police and worst case scenario, it could be construed as harrassment, due to the fact that she is a bit "eccentric"

Just a point I'd be wary of, thats all.

Copy and paste...from the Vehicle Certification Agency UK.

The current noise test standard for passenger cars, as detailed in EU Directive 92/97, consists of driving the vehicle into a test area at a speed of 50 km/hr and then accelerating at full throttle through the test area. A microphone at a set distance from the line of travel measures the maximum level of noise reached. Noise levels are shown in decibels as measured on the A scale of a noise meter. The A scale was devised to ‘weight’ the reading of a noise so it more closely represented what is heard by the human ear.
The external noise emitted by passenger cars has been controlled since 1929 when the Motor Cars (Excessive Noise) regulations were introduced. Since 1973 new cars have been required to meet Europe-wide noise limits. These have been progressively reduced from 82 decibels (dB(A)) in 1976 to the current limit of 74 dB(A). This means it would take 7 new vehicles to make the same amount of noise as a vehicle that just meets the pre-1976 limits.

I think if you build a kit car you have to have the car tested for this at the nearest vehicle testing facility.

My 03sti is 71.5dB.

I think you will find that the public road is actually called the 'Queens highway'.Any vehicle that is taxed ,mot'd and insured is allowed to park there aslong as it is not causing an obstruction or danger to other road users/pedestrians.(unless parking restrictions apply)
I would go down the local plod station and register your complaint that you are being victimised. You pay your road tax etc etc and ARE NOT annoying this person on purpose.

p.s.lewis......get a life or move to a remote island if you want peace and quiet.

I would say its worth trying to talk to her and have an adult conversation. However, for the exact reason talizman has stated above, get someone else with a video camera to video the whole thing, and make sure you have a chat on the doorstep not in her house.

Sad you have to to this but it will cover you if she starts making Jackanory stories up.

Unfortunately these things happen from time to time.

It sounds like the old lady has a bit of a problem, but as others have stated inflaming the situation is the right way to get into some serious $hit with the law.

Try and reason with her, as others have stated, and if she still doesnt listen, make a note of what was discussed, where and when and then start keeping note of what time you are home etc.

At least this way when she calls the police again you can ptry and prove certain aspects and explain the fact that you have tried to reason with her.

People should not start criticising you because you have full de-cat etc, that is your choice. You know that it wont pass emissions, but you are not the only one. If you are driving sensibly to park up, which I'm sure you are there is nothing more you should do to appease her.

I bet a noisey old VW Beetle makes twice the noise. (or when she leaves her drive buring the clutch at 5,500 revs!! coz she never passed her test!!)

Good luck with it all. Just my 2p

pslewis- For someone who earns the money you often claim you don't half mix with dross.

Move to a decent area in a decent house and you have no such problems.

Rob- Ask her to marry you.

I had a similar experience when I owned my lancia (full OMP group A system with no silencers) but it was even worse due to the fact that I only used the car once every 2 weeks, on a sunday & in daylight hours. The old lady next door to where I used to store the car complained to the council about me coming in late every night and making lots of noise. It really pissed me off at the time because it was lies. I never used the car at night because of how loud it was and where I kept it made it impractical. She shut up and it went away in the end. She doesn't realise how lucky she is living next to someone who hardly uses the garage/driveway

These mad old bats have no life and just want someone to speak too

All that said, at the end of the day it's pointless aggravating the old bat further and making her even more vindictive. Don't let the car idle for more than a few seconds before switching off. If you need to cool the turbo just drive slowly for the last part of your journey. A neighbours idling Scoob at midnight is a bloody nuisance if you are tucked up in bed! It's going to be embarassing to have your car noise tested and some kind of "improvement order" slapped on you? Honestly - I would just cool it.
Coincidently, I started the car this morning and let it run to warm while I scrapped the ice, and the wife came out to tell me to move it as a couple of windows were rattling! (they're not loose - honestly!) and this is with an approved PPP system! (STi8)

I'd write her a note first, rather than paying her a visit. As someone said that might be seen as intimidatory and if 2 of you turn up and start videoing it, that may be even more likely to p1ss her off.

Stick the note thorough her letter box.

Be as nice as pie, explain your position reasonably and say that you are disappointed that it has come to a level where the police have been uneccesarily involved. State your case for wanting to park there and say that you are obviously concerned for your vehicle's welfare given that it is a necessary part of your business, hence the need to park close to your house etc etc. (Play on her sympathy -remember she's a woman and she's old so deep down she will have lots probably. Win her sympathy and you will win the argument). Tell her you wish to resolve the matter amicably and that you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss things. Offer her the opportunity to select the venue and say if she feels more comfortable she can have someone present with her (friend or whatever). Leave her your mobile no. so she can contact you to arrange it. Listen to her argument fully without interrupting and then try to come to an agreeable settlement.

Basically BE NICE. Then if it all turns nasty and goes to court, you will be the hero instead of the villain.

If that fails, superglue all her doors up and poor petrol through her letterbox!

Cheers

Rich

Keep a record of your movements for a start, especially if your away and therefore not making any noise at all.

If you want to go a step further...

If you have access to another car, use it for a week, disklok your impreza and give the keys to some third party, maybe even the police station. I am sure that she will complain even though you can prove the car wasn't run for a week.

At this point if she continues to complain it should be clear that she is not being entirely constructive to say the least.

From there it should put you in a much better position, and show that you are being reasonable with you noise making, rather than gratuetous.

Paul
