rsrv,

dont bother with a custom crank.

mine set me back £1500 and was the biggest waste of money havign seen standard cranks taking serious torque and never havign seen an engine fail as a result of one.

The crank is very short as it is so torional loading isnt that bad from the beginning, one of the few advantages of the subaru design.

The standard phase 2 2.5 crank has 52mm big ends and has a 79mm stroke.

You can fit these into phase 1 blocks if you move the thrust bearing from the middle to the end of the block. Its just a case of machining the block to suit.

edited due to heads up from andy on accidental stroke typo, thanks!

Question

You can do it - however you effectively end up with two thrust bearings which need to be machined to less than a thou tolerance - which is not easy!

Effectively use whichever short block suits the the crank you have. There are pluses and minuses of both Phase 1 or Phase 2.

david,

why do you need to retain both thrust bearings when one will suffice?

try these boys they build heaps of stokers http://www.performanceparts.com.au/Subaru.htm an other choice is to use a legacey 2.2 block and close deck it, aust are open deck, and use a standard crank and producing 250kw plus at the wheels, most big kw engines use dog gears 1st and 2nd or the lot, this way you can launch big time without blowen your box.. i have just finished off my RS and using a ra motor, she made a 195kw and 416nm@the wheels in 4th, heres some photos http://karupt.com/flash/ the mods are : complete upgrade of fuel system, bosch pump, bigger injectors, rising reg, new fuel lines to the injector rails, new dump pipe, vf34 twist to allow straight entry, fmic, upgraded link chip for lap top compactability, new headers wrapped in heat tape, adjustable alloy cam wheels, alloy front bottom pulley, steel billet lighten fly wheel....

Think the conclusion to all this is to...

1. Avoid Stroker Kits
2. Get myself a legacy block, dont they make 2.2 L & 2.5 L Legacys

Until reliabliity is proven in this country.

my advice is dont use a kit, do it with subaru cranks.

they do a 2.2 but it doesnt have oil squirters and wasnt a turbo..

they did do an EJ22T block iirc which did have oil squirters, but they are like rocking horse pooh.

Im biased as I have a bored and stroked engine!

ej22t is possibly a stronger block iirc.

ej20 is cheaper.

iirc = if I recall correctly.

closed deck ej22 (a la 22B) is a stronger block, has more support for liners.

also ej22t is available which was built for turbo applications and may have wider oil and water ways, but never seent his bit confirmed. It does have oil squirters which 22B block does not.

ej22 rebored to 2.0 would be the strongest 2.0.

all cdbs are made via medium pressure casting rather than high pressure casting which leads to a denser aluminium having lower percentage of air (presume it isnt in the form of bubbles).

would be interesting to check this by weight both an open and closed deck half and seeing by how much they differ.

Interesting Adam I wonder why they didn't fit oil squirter type blocks to the 22b ?

Thanks for that guys, so from that i can deduce that if i want to go "more" than 2litres the EJ22t block is the best because it already has the capacity and the oil squirters? Where as the 22B block has one but not the other.

Not wanting to open a can of worms but is either of these blocks compatable with my six speed box from my GDB engine?

There is also a 2.33 that has been running for some time - not using a big turbo but running a very streetable mid 400s of bhp and torque.

How many miles Christian ? How many track days ? What BHP and Torque for the last 18 months ?

It's one thing to build a big CC engine to ***** around at 2.0 power levels, another thing completely to have big power (eg 500+)and use it in anger !

T-UK,

I don't know if he comes on here or not and I do not know him personally so would not like to comment in more detail.

The car was built and bench dynoed here - and so the figures are reasonable. I am in touch with the builder and can see if more detail can be had.

The only thing I know about the build is that it used the same pistons that Wallis and myself are using from LP.

Question

Christian,

It has been.

As Andy rightfully pointed out....

What Boost is it running? given that good 2.5 litres should make between 550 & 650hp based on TRP & APS cars we can find on the net.
What power does it make?
What torque does is it make?
How many miles have you done in the last 18 months?
Of those miles what % were trackdays, 1/4 miles, driven in anger?
Can we have total spec of your engine and parts prices please?

Thanks for the help
