Calling all of you out there who are running MORE than the original 2 litres, who's stroker kits & closed deck block options have you used to gain success in the big power stakes?

I have seen various options on the market from MRT & TRP in Australia...anybody care to point me in the right direction.

Andy.F 13 September 2003 05:18 PM

I'm afraid I don't know of any that have had "success in the big power stakes" combined with the level of reliability you'd expect from a road car. There are many builds/rebuilds in progress but there appear to be many potential pitfalls along the way.

The 2.0 seems reliable at circa 450bhp and there are a number of cars with decent mileage on them now at this level.

Andy

The Fixer 14 September 2003 11:16 AM

Cheers Andy, think I'll hang fire for a while to see if these cars in the rebuild stage prove to be reliable.

David_Wallis 14 September 2003 11:37 AM

thought you were coming to see me?? (I also have more than 2 litres)

David

The Fixer 14 September 2003 12:04 PM

David, must admit, I did forget to ring you re: visit. Will have to leave it for the time being as I'm going to put the turbo in the original position. I have discovered that using the APS turbo outlet (90 deg) my required downpipe would probably foul the gear box and that I would have to get modified intercooler pipework also. At the moment I just want to get the car on the road with the new bits, install planned for next week, Fuel pump, Regulator, FMIC, Turbo, Dumpvalve, Full 3" system and ECU (to get rid of the MAF) and enjoy it for a while etc etc. Probably move the turbo when I go down the road of more displacement....

Tell me more about your "more than 2 litres", email me if its secret. lol :D

Andy.F 14 September 2003 02:52 PM

Read Here :) http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=181119

David_Wallis 15 September 2003 09:46 AM

Well my garret's downpipe clears my gearbox :D :D

Adam M 15 September 2003 10:28 AM

So does mine.

I wonder if yours is similar to mine david!

Andy.F 15 September 2003 11:51 AM

Adam

This thread is addressed to those "who are running MORE than the original 2 litres" My engine has probably worn out past 2 litres :D what's your excuse ;)

Adam M 15 September 2003 12:12 PM

standard 22b is 2.2!

Andy.F 15 September 2003 12:29 PM

And your std Sti engine is ???? ;)

The Fixer 15 September 2003 12:37 PM

David, Adam, my problem is that I am running the APS 90deg high flow turbo outlet elbow and I am not sure where the exit from this will be. After this week when the FMIC is fitted, exhaust system is on and MAF has been scrapped I will have more room in that area to asses connection points of revised uppipe and downpipe to move the turbo where I want it. :D

Adam M 15 September 2003 02:23 PM

andy, where does it say CURRENTLY running?

are there times when you ever are not looking to take the p?

because I was simply asking if davids downpipe was a copy of mine, not trying to get in on the high power action which I know you have the monopoly on.

P20SPD 15 September 2003 02:25 PM

Doubt its a copy Adam, similar no doubt due to position etc;), but Paul made it from scratch!:p

Andy.F 15 September 2003 03:15 PM

lol @ Adam :D I'm also running a 2.5L scoob and it has 726bhp ........just not currently :D

Adam M 15 September 2003 03:49 PM

dyno print out andy?

oh you can't provide one because its a lie rather than a set back?

you don't have to be smug all the time you know, I just hope one day you arent unfortunate enough to have an engine failure beyind your control whilst testing the limits of what has been done before.

Personally I think the respect you have earned is due to your providing alternative solutions which are often cheaper, combined with clearly a lot of knowledge.

The big headedness really detracts from that.

Forgive me for jumping off the handle, but I am just not in the mood for it today, and reading what you are writing for once doesn't come across as light hearted banter - more look at me and my achievements and bow.

the details of where you are from just highlight this, just in case new people weren't aware.

You are worthy of admiration as far as I am concerned, but a truly great person is modest in my opinion, and that is something which you are not.

Andy.F 15 September 2003 04:34 PM

Oh Adam, you've still got those Monday morning blues. It's a bank holiday up here, hence my merry state of mind :D (oops, is that me being smug again)

Of course I don't have a dyno print out, it was said in jest. I'm sure others read it as such rather than assuming I had blatantly lied

Perhaps you misunderstood me, I didn't intend to have a 'pop' at your engine failure, sorry if it came across that way.

I have never claimed to be, nor do I aim to be, a "truly great person" far from it, I'm just an average guy playing with cars in my spare time :)

Andy

Adam M 15 September 2003 04:55 PM

am not saying you are a great person, only that in terms of tuning you have achieved great things. I have learned plenty from you, and you were always nice enough to teach me without being smug.

Its just the cutting little comments when they arent necessary such as the above.

You are right again, monday blues, but it would be nice for once if you could add something which isn't a dig at me.

M0NEY 15 September 2003 06:16 PM

Cheer up guys :D

Only 4 days left to the weekend :D :D :D

MAD-MATT 15 September 2003 08:23 PM

I have a 2.2 stroke conversion and i am very pleased with the result, the low down torque is awsome,my car made 343lb with a standard Td05 at 1.4 bar,lol....

The Fixer 15 September 2003 09:05 PM

Adam Chill, Andy Chill, This one will end up as sour as the thread "at Harvey's request" lol

Like the pun though Andy....(POP) :)

Perhaps you misunderstood me, I didn't intend to have a 'pop' at your engine failure, sorry if it came across that way.
Adam, no offence m8y.

Just looking for a reliable stroker kit....

AndyF origin of your kit?

Adam, care to share your supplier?

JB are you out there? You have 2.33 also I believe????

DW, is yours from TRP or is it secret??? OOps Did I say too much :)

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Edited because I've been up since 4 and can no longer spell or type :D

I don't have a stroker kit, it's a std internals 2.0
There are a number of 2.0 cars with circa 450 bhp and just under 400lb-ft torque which have done over 20k miles, have seen a bit of track action and they are all still running strong.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming all strokers are unreliable. Just that they are currently unproven at decent BHP levels in the UK.
I'm sure they are reliable at lower output but what's the point of that ?
I hope that they do prove reliable as the 2.3/2.5 has produced some excellent dyno outputs.

Andy

David_Wallis 15 September 2003 10:33 PM

its all in the thread.. mail me and ill let you know :)

or come and see it.. :p

Adam.. Shut up.. and grab the tampax.. :p

Andy :D :D you make me chuckle :D

Its like 22b on here :)

Cant remember what I was saying..

back later..

David

David_Wallis 15 September 2003 10:35 PM

Back again..

Mad-Matt...

Erm..

Myself and andy have both done more on std 2litre engines with std td05's

You need to map it better :D

I had 345bhp at 6200 and 342lbft at 4000..

STD Engine STD turbo..

I also used petrol.. Im  as to what fuel andy was running but Id guess its probably similar to the contents of my stomach around 3:00am any friday night :D

David

Andy.F 15 September 2003 10:49 PM

C8H18 probably :)

roodog 16 September 2003 06:43 AM

call me a little slow, but when you talk of hp is that @ the wheels or flywheel, whats the conversion from f/lbs to newton metres, us aussies only use metric..

David_Wallis 16 September 2003 10:03 AM

according to onlineconversion.com or something...

342 foot pound-force = 463.6897396 newton meter

The Fixer 16 September 2003 10:27 AM

David LOL @

Im unsure as to what fuel andy was running but Id guess its probably similar to the contents of my stomach around 3:00am any friday night

Any scoobies out there running on kebabs????:D

Or even Alcohol for that matter...now theres an idea????

Andy

There are a number of 2.0 cars with circa 450 bhp and just under 400lb-ft torque which have done over 20k miles, have seen a bit of track action and they are all still running strong
Sorry about this Andy, i am getting a little confused when you type the above. You see, this is my next dilema with my car, stay 2.0l or go bigger, either way it must be reliable, as it will be used day in day out to tune of 5-600 miles a week.

I can probably think of the cars you are covering in your statement, but to my knowledge i am a little uncertain about the mileage claims, ie reliability.

This is not intended as a dig or to start any arguments, just to clarify something thats been bugging me for a while, as the ultimate answer could decide which route i go, if any!

Off the top of my head my summary of the cars i think you mean.

Harvey:- Been running 400+ together with late 300 torque figures for a good while, nearly a year i think since he cracked 417 at well lane. I understand that Harvey does quite a bit of mileage in his car, but would be grateful if he could clarify what mileage he HAS covered since October last year. Only one mishap to my knowledge, pre TOTB2. Harvey also does quite a lot of RR events, Drag shootouts and Trackdays.

John Banks:- Toitering on the 400 limit in his 2.0l stage, but i did not think he used it as a daily driver, merely as a toy? Again i would be grateful if John could clarify is mileage and BHP from a year ago and todate. We all know that Johns mapping abilities and monitoring were constant whilst running at this level, or so i believe. Dont think John has done many Track Days with his car at that level. Again could you clarify.

Andy F:- Again 400+ for a while, certainly since January of this year. Credited is due to you, as a lot of your work is done David Wallis style:D, which is very impressive. Again i would appreciate if you could clarify what mileage you have ACTUALLY covered over the last year, as i seem to remember you once saying less than 5000 miles a year. I am aware that you do quite a few drag days, etc, but again it would be helpful to know how many at the state of tune you refer to. You have also had your engine apart in the last year, cant remember why, but i think you changed the pistons or something:confused:, and you have been through several gearboxes, which is .

Bob Rawle:- Not too sure on bob, dont know how many miles he covers or has covered at the 400 mark, or how many track days etc he has attended whilst at this level!

So in summary, i personally would be very grateful if you, Harvey, John, Bob, etc could provide a summary of mileage, track days, etc over the last year, as that will/may help me decide what i want to do.

My car over the last year covered approx 22000 miles, been on 2 rolling road days, attended 2 drag top speed days with approx 25 runs in total, attended TOTB2 with 8/9 runs and handling circuit runs of 7 or 8 including John Felsteads attempts. It has been off the road in the last year twice, once in december when i realised the tracking was out and the front tyres were dead, 1 week waiting for replacements, and then 4 weeks over June July, after the gearbox went, but thats it. On the 2 rolling road days it produced 338bhp & 313lbft and 343bhp and 325lbft respectively, and i feel it has been running a little more of late due to the headers.

As i posted after TOTB2, where next? This still applies! all this talk of reliabilty at any engine size puts doubt in my mind, especially as the only one i can truly think of is Harvey that does the mileage, which by all accounts proves the reliabilty, but he is running an STi engine.

Even more confused now:confused:

Any thoughts or comments ?

Steven
